I'm searching for some ammo to try in my new 30-06. I understand a gun will pick what it likes, but I need a place to start. Seems I can't go wrong with reminging cor-lok, and the hornady whitetail has me intrigued with good reviews. I noticed the nosler is some higher end ammo. I honestly will site in the gun and maybe shoot it a few times a year, so cost is not a huge concern of mine. Winchester touts nosler's technology and is more expensive http://www.cabelas.com/product/shooting/ammunition/rifle-ammunition|/pc/104792580/c/104691780/sc/104532480/winchester-reg-ballistic-silvertip-174-rifle-ammunition/739976.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Frifle-ammunition%2Fwinchester%2F_%2FN-1100190%2B1000005171%2B4294758211%2FNe-1000005171%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104532480%3FWTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU http://www.cabelas.com/product/shooting/ammunition/rifle-ammunition|/pc/104792580/c/104691780/sc/104532480/nosler-174-ballistic-tip-174-ammunition/1909571.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Frifle-ammunition%2Fnosler%2F_%2FN-1100190%2B1000004164%2B4294758211%2FNe-1000004164%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104532480%3FWTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU anyone have a preference or insight?

agreed. my family has a barn with 4 hangers, tables, industrial saws and grinders, hose and floor drain and hot water. the place is like a production facility when we have a few hanging and a group to help. sports on the tv and good times to be had. At my house I just have a gambrel in the garage. I skin and clean and cut inside. I still have the tv and music but it's not ideal. Generally I put down some cardboard or plastic wrap. But it's a process that's not for everyone for sure. all in all I have $300 in vac sealer and grinder. Another $30 in gamrle/hoist setup, $40 for processing kit http://www.cabelas.com/product/outdoor-edge-wild-pak-game-processing-kit/1867203.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dprocessing%26x%3D10%26y%3D6%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%252BProducts&Ntt=processingplus a few kitchen knives. You can make your money back easy quick. It really comes down to the price you put on your time. What I think some forget is the time it takes to drive to and back from the processor twice. The cost of gas to do that and the cost of the processor. the quality of the facility etc. I doubt many of us live 5 min from our guy.

hard to tell what went wrong. seems you did everything i would have done, although i'm not sure i understand the part about the rain. also how long did he lay before gutted? Did you maybe nick the stomach during gutting? We've all done that. I generally let them hang a night or 2 if it's cold before skinning, but certainly have skinned the same day as well.

These hunt the wind comments drive me nuts. Should you do your best to hunt the wind? Of course. Will this allow you shots at deer? Of course. But a mature buck during the rut can and will do anything. You should be prepared for them to come from anywhere, and doing my best to control my scent and have stands with good thermals is your only hope of still getting a shot. Even more true during gun when they're moving with the crosswinds, however you have an advantage of not needing them under 30.

gadgets are one thing. guns are another. never a bad reason to pick up a new gun!

I'd like to see a guy use one successfully on heavily pressured public land, not some outfitter where the deer have 0 to no pressure.

if you can't be there often, trail cams in good hidden spots that will capture license plates. Even fake cams can do wonders to ward off d-bags. Put a few at the corners and door even if they don't work. motion sensor lights as well. be sure you report the robbery as well. cops wont find anything but its good for insurance and police to have so they can monitor more frequently or possibly recover your stuff if the guys are busted elsewhere.

i'm a scent control freak and I completely agree.

A guy I work with looked at me like was an idiot when i told him I cut up my own deer. Why do all that work when someone can do it for you for $80? For me I enjoy it and look at it as completing the hunting loop. I will still use a processor if time and conditions wont allow me to cut it up, but otherwise I enjoy it.

I like some turn as well, but it does depend on the memory and rack as well

What bullet are you using this season

Just picked up a ruger american 30-06 for a steal. Waiting for it and my scope to arrive. I thought more guys would shoot the hornady american whitetail. Any reason any of you dont? -
lucky you! I know what it said, I was excited but the employees clarified it was just their generic stuff. Poor advertising in my opinion. I actually bought the vx3 off optics planet yesterday. They had it marked down plus another 11% off and free shipping. When I did the math with rebate I paid only $5 more than the cabelas price because I didn't pay tax. $340 I think?

ive been to 3 or 4 processors and never had one that didn't label. Assuming your smaller cuts might be your chops/backstraps. Best cut but also the smallest.

One Outdoor Writer's impression of the 2015 Opener
Five Seasons replied to Doc's topic in Deer Hunting
hunted 7j and it was the quietest opener excluding the very rainy one we had 5 years ago or so. The normal gang that pushes the flats was absent. I don't know if there truly is less people interested in hunting, or is it that more hunters are sick of the hassle in finding good land, the constant changing regulations and stipulations put on them, or are our kids not getting brought into the sport? I understand we are a busy people. There is never enough time for anything it seems, and many could argue hunting is a very time consuming activity without any financial gain or arguments to be made against the nagging spouse. However, I truly believe it should be a sport where you can walk into the woods with a little bit of regulatory knowledge and hunt a deer. However, it takes an expert to understand what you can and cannot hunt and with what and when. The DEC has made a recreational activity a full time job if you want to be successful. Throw in the work or money required just to find land and I think a lot of guys have just given up. Selfish bowhunters like myself love an empty woods. There's nothing worse to a bowhunter than other hunters except maybe loss of habitat. But when I switch out my bow for my gun, my fellow neighbor can be my best friend. I hunted 3 straight days in 8F after the opener and only had a shot the last day at a 6 and spike. Completely voided the other 2 and that's extremely rare. The last 2 days of bow I counted over a dozen deer including a wall mounter 8. -
Right, but they had $150 off plus the $100 rebate. That's a $550 scope for $300. A vx2 will run you $250 on sale, so that was a hell of a deal. Stopped at the cabelas in buffalo on the way home. Guy said they sold out of all them early in the morning.

I think that was just some of their generic stuff.

If you're seeing deer but not getting shots id suggest spending more time pre-season trimming lanes and putting in more stands. Perhaps making runs. Too many people throw money at hunting. Believing the latest gizmo or gadget will cure their woes. Nothing beats boots on the ground. Spend the money on stuff to keep you warm and in the woods.

Weight for me is always post field dressing, everything else in tact
-
I tried once many years ago and it spooked the deer. If I just waited the slow moving deer would have given me a shot. Too much tv watching I think. I'd only try if it was my only hope
-
Feelings have been hurt. What a surprise
-
I think I've weighed every deer I've ever shot. We keep records though. A decent digital scale is like $40 and gets you in the ballpark
-
I've always found it difficult to score sideways deer

Ruts about over and if hunters aren't moving them you're basically wasting your time
