  1. clueless as usual. all those advancement have made us overall better hunters with both gun and bow. so the camo and treestands are all moot points. If it's the weapon in question (which it is), then like I said even before I heard your challenge, I plan to learn and practice either this season or next. I can drop a doe almost everytime im in the woods and I'd relish in taking a deer with a recurve. I would not make it my main bow, but I'd like to take it out once or twice. if I do get enough practice in to feel I'm good enough with one to take a deer without wounding it I will do just that. I also believe that we have hashed and rehashed how a crossbow is different from a bow so I wont even get into it. But I do believe the overall mechanics of a compound vs a recurve are very similar. A recurve to a crossbow are not. Don't even argue with it because we've beaten that horse to death and we're not changing either of our minds.
  2. i originally read this thread as banging hogs and now i'm disappointed.
  3. again i'm not sure why, but that is for SZ only. Not the state. oh and on crossbows? winner, winner chicken dinner
  4. i must have missed your challenge in all the hub bub. what is it? if it's recurve, i'm already in the process of getting one from my uncle in an attempt to at least drop a doe.
  5. they were against youth hunt. and i agree with that stance. i still for the life of me do not understand the nz muzzleloader push. totally don't agree with that, but i was not a member at the time to hear the logic.
  6. understood. The NRA supports the initial background check system from the 80's, however new improved checks and those between private parties (which would circumvent a check) they do not. I do not agree with this, i think it would be a good practice. http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/news-from-nra-ila/statement-from-chris-w-cox-nra-ila-executive-director-regarding-inaccurate-nbc-story-alleging-that-nra-wont-oppose-background-check-bill.aspx

  8. muck brand muck boots are the greatest thing i've ever added to my hunting gear
  9. bowhunting numbers have been increasing every year. There will be ZERO hunters that start hunting because they can use a crossbow. All it does it extend the season of the gun hunter now wishing to take the easy way into archery. I do not see any youth joining or new hunters joining because now they can use a crossbow. This hunter has already started with a bow or a gun. Best way to get new hunters? more land and better access. #1 issue in our sport hands down.
  10. I know very well what QDMA is about. But local chapters and national org views do seem confusing and conflicting. They're obviously not black and white. We can keep arguing and getting our panties in a bunch, but truth be told you're a sore loser. One day maybe they'll make crossbows legal. But right now they're not and biz-r-world's famous line of "i'll see you in the woods with my crossbow on oct. 1st" will simply just get him a ticket in 2013. Again you're on the outside looking in, trying to change my way of life. There's not much more to say from me to you. Joe you're so clueless. You're constant "+1's" bring nothing to the table. What is so confusing about my post to warrant a "WTH"? Everything I wrote about the NRA and NYB which you bolded is true. You've never even bowhunted. I wish you the most success this year with your new bow (remember i offered to help you buy one). I think after all the hard work you're putting in that you will one day see where I'm coming from. I wonder too, if crossbows do become legal if you'll give up the bow. I hope you do not. Curious as to why you're so pro crossbow. I have read the entire QDMA report back to back. I believe even WNY mentioned he doesn't agree with all of it but i'm not about to look up the post and if he didn't i am sorry. My only point about the QDMA (which I have considered joining many times) is that there is confusion about their stance on some subjects, and to be a member you don't have to agree with all of it. Just like one might be confused about NYB's stance on some issues, being a member doesn't mean we all agree with everything they preach. Please lets not change the subject to QDMAs. I know full well the difference between ARs and what QDMA believes. I've quoted their website several times here and I have a QDMA coffee mug on my desk right now. I can post a pic if you'd like.
  11. for what it's worth, you don't have to hunt to enjoy the outdoors. I would encourage you possibly to start with small game to see if you have an appetite. A deer is a magnificent creature and tough to watch die sometimes. Try squirrel and turkey first. Maybe even just take the boys to a lake and fish. If you all eat it up, then look into deer. All game can get frustrating. Hours and hours of waiting to maybe get a shot. Ween them in on some higher probability game first. just my .02
  12. Success of NYB you mean? Because last I checked there's no xbow's in NYS...
  13. wow. I bet the van did some nice damage to the yard too. sounds like ontario though
  14. i never said you could or could not talk about it. I just don't see the value. The NRA doesn't believe in background checks. I do. I'm still a member because i believe in their overall cause. NYB was ok with muzzleloaders, I was not. They aren't very big advocates for disabled hunters, and I am. I still believe in their overall cause. You're a member of an organization whose local chapter pushes ARs and whose national chapter does not. No organization is perfect. As far as what you believe the truth is and what actually is... that's debatable. Again, I just don't see the value in bringing them up every other post. It brings nothing to the debate, just like the NYCC brings nothing. They're 2 organizations on opposite sides of the issue we're discussing. Why can't we just continue to discuss the issue?
  15. a lot of truth in this post. I will not deny it's part of why I push back so much. However, i do only hunt private land and crossbows would have little affect on me. I would argue the majority of why I started bow hunting was because of the rich tradition it had in my family and not to get away from shotgun, which i still love. When I first got into it, I instantly fell in love with the challenge, the dynamics of the early season and the rut. I see myself as more of an advocate on preserving the season, the sport and the tradition. I do enjoy the fact that not every swinging d!ck in the woods can bowhunt. I do enjoy the fact that's it is sort of like a brotherhood and that it takes time and dedication to be good at it. I do enjoy the fact that those who do not put the time and effort in eventually quit. I like the fact that when I tell other hunters I'm a bowhunter and show them some of my nice bow kills that it usually garners a lot more respect, then simply "yeah I hunt deer". This may get me labeled as an elitist by some, and that's fine. I will not go as far as making the analogy of standing up for our second amendment rights, but it's in the same tune. To preserve what we've known, what we love and what many believe is right.
  16. honestly beats me. I just know, when left unatteneded or in a bad season it seems the apples around me will still produce a little of something and the pears might not. My statement was totally based on experience and not any actual knowledge on the subject
  17. NYB has very little presence on this site, let alone leadership. I really wish you'd get off their n*ts. I haven't attacked the NYCC once. You want to debate the cause, that's fine.
  18. i'm like to see the report on the NZ. Few buddies I know up there have seen less deer. So i can't claim that as gospel, but has it helped or hurt? genuine question.
  19. so you wouldn't be mad if I shot a fawn off my deck in shotgun only 8f with a 300 win mag in July? right?
  20. as far as gear is considered, making it easier to kill a deer is sort of an interesting topic. My muck boots dont bring in deer, but they do allow me to comfortably cross a stream, remain dry and get to my stand. My ladder sticks don't make it easier to kill a deer, but allow me to safely climb a tree (something we've been doing a long time). New cammo is generally not any better than the old stuff. We just believe the manufacturers who say it is. Nothing stops us from the old tried and true organic soaps, mud and leafs to be just as effective at killing as hunters of 30 years ago. But with technology we have made it more efficient. vanes and broadhead... idk i'm torn on those. They do improve your odds, but in addition do they also help save some wounded deer? Would crossbows save wounded deer, or would they bring more "shoot at the bush that is moving" hunters? I dont know. But safety harness? I can't believe you'd lump something into the discussion that can save lives. All in all, we all have buddies or know a guy who buys the latest and greatest everything. Most of these guys that I know can't hunt their way out of a paper bag. Their wallets are lighter than mine and they're hands are probably a little warmer... that is until i stick mine in my dead deers belly.
  21. good idea. a little dangerous but i'll try it. thanks.
  22. changes the dynamics of the season. you and anyone else can't argue that. "oh go buy some private land" blah blah blah. That argument is so hypocritical. "you're worried about me stealing your deer" no i'm not. you can bowhunt right now if you wanted. It adds a different kind of hunter to a season that is growing in popularity. Why mess with success?
  23. fair enough, but it opens the door to what we all know would happen anyhow. That's why the pro crossbow WAS pushing it. and it's in the DEC's 5 year plan
