  1. the demographic of the hunter, nascar, beer drinking rock music loving college football fan. Generally, and of course it's not a given, the same person who hunts also likes nascar. And if they dont (not a fan myself), they're still hitting a large portion of nascar fans by advertising. isn't there a show out now called cars, god and guns or something? i have no idea what you guys are talking about with baseball??? although i didn't read any of this thread, just responding to the first post.
  2. I've lost track of doe kills as well, but I think it's only a few anyhow. The buck kills always come back because when I look at the wall in my garage it's like triggering a memory from a photo. Although as i get more under my belt, some of the smaller buck details begin to fade. The one I had mounted and my first deer are still fresh as ever though. I guess what I meant was, that even if you can't remember the kill, you probably learned from it. My grandpa's favorite story was not about his book buck, but the 4 point that charged him when he was still hunting. That's what I mean by "the story". agreed. big buck, small buck, fawn or doe. it's that realization that it's on. very true as well. cool stuff happens in the woods it's why I love when a deer sort of just "appears" it doesn't give you any time to think, you have to react. It's when you see the big horns slowly moving in and out of the brush that does it for me. Almost always shake after a shot though.
  3. i have cams year round behind my house, but mostly to check for "people" and they're easy to pull. Where the good land is we put them out in mid august.
  4. i pulled my 2 cams that sit behind my house last weekend for the first time since early June. Only to find that one hadn't taken a single picture due to a memory card malfunction. Only 1 3 pointer, but 3 big does. 1 with a single and the other with twins. But they're always together so it's kind of cool. remember to format your cards if you're swapping them in and out of cams! haha
  5. only good for relatively flat terrain. I bought the cheaper steel kind from gandermountain. I want to say $50? the aluminum is more but if you're decently strong it doesn't matter. Only issue I ever have is my neighbors 4-wheel/buggy trail that we use. The wheels on my cart are just the right size so that they don't fit in the ruts and they're too wide to fit between. very annoying haha.
  6. my analogy has always been commercial vs sport fishing. If all we wanted was to catch the biggest and the most fish, we'd all use nets. But we enjoy the experience, the water, the sun the story and the fight with the fish, so we dont. Archery and hunting in general have always been that for me. I'm glad baiting and spotlighting is illegal here in NY. I don't hunt to kill, I hunt as a sport. The reward is the nice buck, or even a doe that fills my freezer and gives me a story to tell for many years to come. Every deer I've shot has left me with knowledge and a new experience.
  7. I've found that playing with my older matthews that the sweet spot is around 60. I have no problem with 70 but i find there is a little "hitch" when i get to the letoff. At 60 it's almost nonexistent. I enjoy Joe's opinion on archery. Considering he hasn't even gone through a season yet. No offense Joe, but Doc has forgotten more about archery and hunting than you and I know combined. we shouldn't underestimate trail cams either. A lot of hunters, myself included rely more and more on them to help reduce the time we really need to scout. They do not replace runs, scrapes, beds and rubs. But a novice hunter certainly does not have to devote as much time to picking a location with the aid of several cams.
  8. crossbows. but on a serious note, the electronics aid, but do not always land the deer. I know plenty of hunters who invest thousands and never shoot a nice deer. And vis versa.
  9. i think it's all the wet weather. I dont believe i have any rotted wood. where I found them was the chimney/deck area. Killed a bunch and sprayed with some spectracide and also dropped some of the granuals. We will see how it works. But prior to that i've killed 1 or 2 that made it inside a day. Not cool.
  10. can you hear me rolling my eyes?
  11. i hear ya. had someone ask me if I had the fever yet. And really it doesn't hit me till August. Just too busy with other things in July. I've been meaning to get to my cams but something always comes up. The new fun problem is carpenter ants. yippie.
  12. very well put. although i'd recommend you ditch the aluminum for some carbons. I think my switchback is close if not older than 10 as well. I've replaced the whisker biscuit for a drop away, and changed my scot release to the palm strap wins free. Otherwise its the same setup i started with. New arrows last year too. They seem more consistent, but that could just be me getting better. If you're killing deer, don't mess with it.
  13. i have the hickories too. and a lot more apples. wondering if it'll prevent them from being concentrated from the few that did produce like last year.
  14. i have several eating my veggies. you can have them all if you'd like.
  15. ehh a small group of bleeding libs doesn't surprise me. No worse than westburo baptist picketing soldiers funerals. Some people just don't "get it".
  16. not destroying? I know some guys who use these permit in late spring and that wouldn't be for me. Late summer shouldn't be to big an issue, early and it might affect some fawns. I know a guy that gets out during september. That always kind of bothers me, but his permit says no antlers? I don't know. always thought it was weird.
  17. just spit out some of my coffee. thanks for a good start to my Friday!
  18. ghillie suit. only downfall on the ground is that is can snag on a lot of stuff. I have a nice 2 piece from cabelas with a scentblocker liner that i remove during turkey. Haven't been busted once.
  19. touche. but I hope to hunt with my bow into my 80's just like my grandfather did before he passed.
  20. I suppose they figured it wasn't worth their time and they were right. If the DEC has it in its plans; why would they even bother? They have to head it off before it's in the hands of the DEC and that's exactly what they have done, and did and won at.
  21. I never said I was confident. You're the one who was all cocky and confident. Do I need to requote you again? $1000 bet where you get 3 years? come on... for what it's worth I agree that it's probably just a matter of time. We've seen with our second amendment rights and universal health care and now with reversal of abortion acts ect... My point is not to say the crossbow issue is on the same level, but that groups will keep pushing and pushing whenever differences of opinions are had. Some times all it takes is a foot in the door and a reason, IE sandy hook. Interesting to see if "stand your ground" is repealed in flordia. I will never stop "arguing over the net". why? honestly, I enjoy the debate and it kills time when I get a free minute. I will not stop giving money to NYB, and I will not stop shooting my bow. There is no end to any of this. even if they're legalized there will be an effort to make them illegal. it's a circle.
  22. i no longer have to worry about the 1 branch I had that was touching the ground. The deer took care of it. haha.
  23. who have you heard that has sympathy?
