I'd hope a football player could pull back >45lb. That all being said I posted something very similar earlier in this thread. I played 3 sports and wasn't able to devote the time to archery and instead was a gun only hunter early on. Then engineering school made it impossible for me to even get in the woods for longer than opening weekend and thanksgiving day. Like I've said a few times now, if I had picked up a crossbow when I was 14 I doubt I'd ever have invested the money and time when I graduated to learn the bow. That's my fear.

yeah but you dont know that those aren't gun hunters. Generally more bow hunters hunt from a small stand then gun hunters who may just post up behind a tree. generally.

thanks for the clarification and that's why they're difficult my big 8 was 20 pounds smaller than my 5. Genetics lead to different deer size.

I guess i'm confused. I thought the brow tines didn't count. Think how many scrubby 6 point 1.5 year olds would pass ARs. Like you said, in my area there are many 6 and even 8 point 1.5 year olds. just great genetics. Heck my 5 this year was 150lb and did not have a spindly rack. it's why i'm conflicted on ARs because i think spread, tine mass and height needs to come into play and then it just gets messy when you're drawing or getting ready to pull the trigger. We all know some bucks only give you mere seconds at a good shot.

problem with 3pt a side is we have a huge heavy beam 6 on cameras this year. Most guys would mount this buck including myself. But he doesn't pass ARs. I dont know the answer. I'm not sure why NYB got brought up in this topic. I'm almost positive I read on their website that they do not support them.

i could use a tall one. see problem is there's nothing really in season right now unless you want to hunt squirrels in sub zero temps. Otherwise we'd all be in the woods and not on our computers.

i agree with that. I have consented to the fact that the recurve has transformed and been replaced by the compound which has gotten better and more advanced. I guess it's just hte fact that the fundamentals of the bow are still the same. Bowhunting is still being quiet, close to the game and knowing when to draw and release. the xbow covers all that except the draw and when shooting from a bipod or rest it falls on its face. For what it's worth my uncle takes some monsters out of Rush every year and still hunts with fingers, My father only switched to a release 3 years ago.

A DEC officer can and will stop you from hunting the way you want. I enjoy your passion. It's a breath of fresh air from a generation of lazy kids, but you're not hunting to feed and cloth your family. This is now a sport. Sports have rules. Some are for safety, others to preserve "the game" and furthermore some are to make the game challenging (wooden instead of aluminum bats). And yes, when advocating to change the season i have grown to love you will be imposing on the tradition. The younger generations will gravitate towards the "cool" xbow. Ohio is the best example of this. Joe, Why do you personally want to use a crossbow over a compound? Why have you only gun hunted to date?

it's amazing what you see when the heavy snows have patted down the brush. I went out on MLK and was able to get into some brush and sapling areas previously inaccessible unless i had a machete. The rubs I found blew me a way. Best to hang stands in the spring and trim lanes and approach trails throughout the summer because the lanes you have with the leaves down may not be there come fall.

I guess as Phade mentioned about Ohio, is that eventually it may not ruin my desire to hunt with a bow, it's that the numbers grow smaller and the tradition dies. how do you know anything about what happened when compounds came out? you're younger than me and it was before my time. it was the first year and it was rainy weekend. 8F and 7J. I hunt 2 spots in 8F. One I bowhunted during late season and the other I hunted with a muzzleloader and if you'd like to hunt with an xbow than you should have that right and you have my support. I'm glad we have finally agreed to disagree about our views on the archery season. Like I said earlier this is generally one of those arguments that will not persuade any hunter to change their views.

We speak about tradition and use it all the time when we speak about the new gun laws and ARs but then we throw tradition to the wind when we talk xbows...
