drive a ton too...hunt a bunch very hit n miss; on and off this year imo

Bright nights- pm chasing/seeking- all day deer season- midday (as noted above) just remember to hunt closeer to bedding (woods) in the am and travel closer to food sources in the pm .... will put you in the game regardless

So if i buy a small game license and can shoot 6 rabbits a day i should be able to shoot more deer because the license costs more? come on... archers are limited by distance shootable so why not equate that to more days on the season..there is no point in that logic.. SZ (deer) gun hunters are the spoiled fat kid of hunting world here in NYS... thanks for reminding me where the enabled entitlement problem lies when it comes to a thread on why NYS is not a high quality deer state....

Tough to judge from a frontal view but i would never think that deer is 4.5 and can give you a number of very typical biological consistencies as to why... But it seems every opposer to ARs comes up with some point, thought relevant is miniscule in frequency. Big principal here...stop killing so many young bucks. If its 3 on one side...how many deer will be spared form the harvest? not may but the objection comes form slobs who like to see brown, see any horn and shoot....not safe or sportsmanlike

Lets change the question- Do you feel that the average age of bucks harvested in NY should be 1.5 years old?

The buck pic is a 1.5 yo born late initially or perhaps had nutritional deficiencies... Did any of you cry when you saw today NYON's cover story..."Survey Supports Crosswbows and ARs"? Again the Northern Zone accounts for 15% of the buck harvest...not to be rude...but thats a different issue and not comparable to the SZ much at all.

NY i am with you- just the easiest means to implement less juvenile bucks being blasted. not perfect....sick of this detailed flaws opposers bring up.....just excuses not to play along....

first week of nov- scent free- buck decoys have brought in bucks- some of which were big some of which were not..but scare does...timing and location is everything....tough state due to buck:doe ratio being so doe askew

so legality is the only reason- therefore admitting if Ars would pass you'd play along got access for free- to prime ground. half a day multiple properties secured in big buck counties isnt it ironic how many of you say your opinion is better...lol? i think hypocrates ruin everything i think anyone letting any meat from a killed animal is a POS Also the natives did not have licensing. In the same vane or our great unmanaged game approach wiped out a few things and nearly wiped out alot more. But TR was a trophy hunter so why like him? Why have slot limits on fish? If i buy i license why cant i keep what i fairly catch, right? we are not going to solve anything here...just sick the opposing attitude and decided to throw counterpoints in..thats all. Go hunt Ohio and then come back here....it will make you feel like your trying to buy a months worth of groceries from a wilson farms rather than the wegmans you just left..... no ars there....and they have crossbows and a much longer season (though NYS gun hunters would be severly depressed by their 1 wk approach)....but it comes down to self control due to knowledge..surely there rae guys that shoot "little bucks"...but most dont due to knowing a little patience grants a more fufilling experience overall..here many hide behind its my right- so i am going to do what i want because others will if i dont... no one would shoot a 1.5 yo 5 pt if they had the same chance at shooting a 200+pound 150" 10....just want the self sustaining BS to fall apart...most guys would be amazed to know the deer that live here, and in their spots......and we could have more if we just stopped shooting dinks. Let the first year hunters shoot whatever...let the remainder of us harvest what is best for the herd and sport

First off- please excuse my lousy spelling/typing The hypocricy stems from a few aspects; the majority of hunters (even on our survey here) state ARs are great idea- but then they blast button bucks why should i listen to "your pro AR mentality"- but then denying the DEC "strongly supports voluntary ARs" they "trophy is only a trophy in the takers eyes"..but then passing on does just to shot a small buck scientific evidence says there is no need for ARs- but shooting little ones skews the population age/breeding structure surely someone will go for the point by point rebuttle...but riddle me this; Why not wait for a mature buck?

Ever notice the DEC suggests on voluntarily passing on small bucks (or did on their webpage last year).....hmmm.... more food for thought....guess their opinion doesnt count either Not a fan of shooting small bucks...but my larger aspect of contention is that guys say ARs/QDM? blah blah blah..and then hammer the first 1.5 yo dink that walks by after letting does pass. Speaking as someon that understands deer, and hunts them...that is not being a steward of the land or "sport". Hating hypocricy

the northern zone is 15% of the total deer harvest- no offense you guys are in a totally different predicament. wNY and central NY are loaded in most areas. Love how it comes back to quick decision making being hampered....god forbid folks know what theyre shooting... lol. As posted in another thread on here...lots of tlakers; few walkers. My guess is many would shoot em tied to a stake and claim theyre sportsman.

Thanks for the suggestion- but there is no displeasure here other than the company i am forced to keep due to ignorance of the other students. Post after post on why i need bait, a crossbow, this n that.... bet many guys though denying up front would shoot em tied to stake and claim to be a sportsman...its an experience and if you cant raise you should go elsewhere..such as the aforementioned golf game

Our deer herd, including doe:buck ratio, is way out of whack... Does are not bait, does in estrus can/will allure bucks. Too many does means a "muted" seeking phase of the rut. wNY is way out of whack with the ration. should be 1.5:1 (d: and was as high as 9:1 in some areas going back 10 years ago. If the population is balanced- so many things are better. Herd health (availble food, resistance to communicable diseases, age struture), hunting (bucks respond to rattling, better genetics transfered through preferential doe breeding), less deer hit on roads..etc. when bucks go into lockdown with does they leave the main doe population- so your jam packed bar on ladies night is not a hot commodity. How much time on his feet does he need to find that one hot doe with so many around? and he has one- the others mean nothing. So more girls than guys means no guys spotted. see what i mean? QDM and trophy buck management differ...most do not know/see that. regardless..if you wnat better buck hunting and a better deer hunting experience in most of upstate NY..buy and fill doe tags letting little bucks walk.

best day to scout is the first day after season and every day during season. Notes are key. Hunt recorder diary kind of thing. Winds direction, moon, crops, pressure.....it is amazing how the details paint pictures in retrospect and how your approach will take confidence for future hunts. Draw maps, take pics, and never go into the woods at any time of year w/o binos.... just some ideas...feel free to take or leave em
