  1. have a bunch of cheapy ladders and chain ons....but mobile stand hunting is one of the best things i have ever got into....check seats (and shooting lanes), chains, steps, repalce bolts and washers (plastic help so much for stealth)...
  2. Ars are the simplest feasible way to raise the age of bucks. They are a good starting point but the system needs so much more. I seriously pose the question? What aspects of our seasons are based on biology? Please think this out before a response. Couple more: How many of you believe the stats the state produces on deer kills? ever see one for the popution of whiteails in your area? Any reason to call bucks less than 3" antlerless deer? Most guys do not even realize the caliber of bucks that live in NY, let alone what we could have for a healthier herd and trophy bucks if the system was properly adjusted. My fear is the state will have too many deer killed in some areas and/or a communicable disease will take hold of others. Thats why numbers matter folks. And when it comes to bucks- if oyu need a law to let a 3 pointer go during the SZ gun season; you do not understand ecology or care about conservation imo
  3. I swear- if NY would just copy Ohios syllabus we could all be happy- youth, crossbows, long seasons, big bucks & little ones.... When people make the argument on not knowing what theyre shooting at being a problem with ARs I shiver ..... I back Ars, but do nto believe theyre the "fix" we need a restructure of deer managment and hunting in the state....just clean slate it
  4. I know a few guys who have hunted the park o rlive near...heck that guy last year or the year before kept posting pics of the ones at the MM entrance on here...there are some dandies in there. Always laughing about the big deer I see in NT, Cheektowaga, Amherst and Buffalo. All it is IS AGE..... thats why there are not more of them....too many guys shooting the first horned animal they see....and many of them do not shoot does which doubles the debacle CHC-totally agree bud. Yes- I agree! I used to be huge on ARS, and even as my leeter in NYON states- I rather have accurate stats...then we can have some decisions made on what and where. The state has no clue on what lives and dies in most areas. Diversity is huge in this state. 15 yrs ago we could shoot 3/4 does as a group of 5 guys on the family farm..now it is 35 deer (with 5 hunters) with 40000 DMPS being doled out for 8G....thinking someone missed the picture there. It is not that I am anti DEC but I will say it again....they only care about license sales.....
  5. Potentially the inability for a random hunter to shoot a random deer (i.e. young buck) would shoot a doe instead ... My favorite part of ARs is hunters would take more time to identify their target.... The $10 dmp deal was a nail in the coffin of a balanced sex ratio imo
  6. oops- ignore that...but nonetheless I am excited about an earlier opener in some aspects
  7. I may be a guy who kills some of those mature bucks and I am probably a guy who knows about many of them (including the ones that fly under the internet radar)...but when you have most of the hunters and deer kill in the state - 3 dozen 3.5 or older ones on line does not mean squat when it represents less than 5% of the take. Why should AR be in WNY- because (despite the states BS stats) almost every male killed here is less than 2.5 yo and we are saturated with deer and does (our b:d is way out of whack)...... my beef is the state has no idea on how many deer are here or killed and (again) it appear to be all about license sales. A serious deer hunter could understand the opportunity here for a helthier herd (due to mean age and managed population including that of b:d ration) and the trophy potential that would coincide
  8. Wonder why regions 8 & 9, where the majority of hunters and deer in the state reside, have never been able to try ARs or let the milk dry on their muzzles before they get killed.
  9. For what it is worth I think the chase phase of the rut (most seem to really miss that point of there being four defined aspects to the "rut") being hard to hunt but easy to see deer....I am much more excited abotu the Oct SZ opener headed our way to help cushion the blow of crossbows raping archery season
  10. Wow the attitude of this site has changed so much. Personally- I like it As for having so many obligations being an excuse for shootig something brown- just call it what it is boys; you like killing animals. If you live in the NZ where shooting anything is "hard" that is a different deal but most of the SZ has way too many does ... do everyone a favor and change that while letting younger bucks grow up into a lasting memory of folks afield.... rather than something rotting in a box, or on the wall, in the back of your garage. Oh yeah- if you want to compare: obligations, kids, bills and work hours- bring it on.... do not know who the kid is who you were busting on but your argument is as bad as your hunting approach. Please note even the DEC has recommended for the past few years that people pass yearly bucks...go to their webpage and check that out....because I know if my family was hurting for food i would be online beating up some kid over why I shoot little bucks.....
  11. Huntingbeast.com new webshow Whitetailsinc.com web show Deer & deer hunting Growing Deer the rest are product porn
  12. lean family- 4 yo, 3 yo, wife and myself- 5. We are foodies too...but the only beef we eat is a NY or Delmonico and ithats 4/5 times a year.
  13. Noticed this thread has QDM aspects, TBM aspects, property managment, herd management, NZ deer hunting vs SZ and then a pissing contest amongst bow hunters (which at least we see the huge difference between us and the orange folks)....but all the folks I know and run with who take mature bucks seriously could do it with any weapon..almost all of them are SZ...and if they own the ground there is a much bigger picture than if theyre after a (single) mature buck...... hunters all want the biggest buck in the woods but the VAST majority in NY are too lacking the effort to make it happen with consistency
  14. The chase phase of the rut primarily falls the first full week of November..... use a field diary and youll agree
  15. Genetics are as much of an issue in WNY as too short of a gun season (yes- thats sarcasm). Age will yield bigger bucks- 2/3rds (at min) are 1.5 or less. Last yrs stats were total BS
  16. The early comparisons to porn were right on.....just made for entertaining a bunch of lonely guys who cant get the same stuff to happen in their yard.... makes motivation disappear and the drooling idiot consumer come out armed with ideas fo products helping them make it to the "big leagues".
  17. Tom, that makes sense so don't expect the DEC to do anything that makes sense. You are right it's about the $10 DMP fee they will be getting. Increase revenue reduce hunter opportunity.Dave Ok then, please tell me the number of hunters that get the bow/ml license and do not currently apply for DMPs. If you guys have this theory that its all about an extra $10 per hunter, then back your claims up with numbers. Otherwise, you are just talking out of your you know what. Buck, don't you think that they factored in the increased revenue that the extra $10 would bring in? Remember this is just opinions no need to provoke anyone. Dave Love how Hurst quoted DMPs being such a tool....good thing we charge for them then.....think the only tool here is someone who believes ti isnt about license sales (lol)
  18. Guess I am the dork here Like the Blood Brothers instructional DVDs, Eberharts, Dr.Nordbergs....the occassional avg joe (Whiteknuckle, Parsons, Venatic, Blue Ridge, Team Overkill)....or some of the web based ones now..
  19. I am done believing the produced numbers and scared $hitless of the dmus with 30-40000 DMPs to be doled out......and most my hunting is in one of them.... The only pros for killing every doe alive is should make a more defined rut and that a communicable disease may not kill every deer in wNY......but to think that 15 years ago 1 doe was the prize of 5 guys on a permit and now 5 doe tags per hunter is proof (to me) no one knows how many deer live or die in any area of NY
  20. prove the people who get paid to compile them even have a clue (let alone any data) then we can get back to the grassroots/better undertsanding version if the other posts havent painted that picture for you yet....
  21. According to the survey 58% of people voting are gun only hunters and/or have the same level of undertsanding on our herd that the DEC does (?doesnt)
  22. Food plots are for people who want "their local" population of deer to benefit within a small aspect of habitat... Shot plots are for those who want to educte "their deer" that theyre being hunted
  23. Any reason why my post in this thread disappeared? You know...the one about how it is cool to bash QDM but support ones' own high fence "hunting" interests....... that guy is an idiot based on hipocracy alone. My guess is 25-50% of QDMA members are still thinking TBM, and those who dont belong have much less of a clue, or care beyond their muzzle blast
  24. License sales are all that are even attempted to be managed in this state.
