The gun season should be shortened- perhaps 1 week of shotgun/rifle/cross bow...then another 5-7 days of a ml/bow/crosssbow. The orientation of the season could use some revamping too- the "gun" seasons (inc ml; southern zone) run continuous...there should be a break in there imo. 5 or 10 yrs ago hardly anyone used an ml, now most do and hunt that season. Again- it should be about deer, not deer hunters. I would bow out of this discussion if the state could say we need this gun season set at this time and for this length......but the likely nature of that is about as good as posting a opposing opinion on here and having someone not trying to make it a personal attack. :

I think so much of it resides with the way society views hunters, and we have many class clowns looking for the limelight (or at least finding themself in it)

Need some Kleenex Larry? Try effort...it may do you wonders

Hey- the troll is back Didnt know we could flame a member on spelling- i guess my action show you that your topic didnt warrant much effort (through my laziness) I typically find myself peeing on the parade of orange clad geniuses here because somoen needs ot remind you that your little club house is not how the outside world feels Most (not all, so save your hate mail) NY gun hunters are lead flinging dingbats. Seasons are about more than YOUR recreation. If we had a competant wildlife management organization they would care about that...but they (like most NYS entities) are solely about $$$$ Farthest thing from an antihunter or animal rights activist. I have been an active member of all of the nY hunting boards, including the multiple phases of this one.....just want to remind the chit talkers most dont agree with them. And yes, boys and girls, most gun hunters are lazy.....and you are nothing less than spoiled in this state
-
it is illegal. buy yourself some binoculars and learn to hunt; money much better spent
-
you know what they have in common? Most bowhunters would pass on all of them and most gun hunters would hammer them. There are a ton of nutrition and developement factors with antlers..bottom line is 3.5s and up are mature in age and have racks most aspire to harvest.... selfrestraint boys- it does wonders
-
driving deer is the number one way to excert pressure on them and ruin the trophy potential of a property....but i love that my neighbors do it...it makes my ground sizzle.
-
can you imagine not following up a shot on this deer.

wasnt there a thread on here about how hunters are viewed as slobs....EVERY time the triggers pulled the the shooter should end their hunt and begin their search -
Any state that cannot give you an accurate number of deer killed/living in a na area couldnt manage anything beside urinal pucks in the mens bathroom Most folks have no idea on that big deer exist here....but the number is so miniscule..and NYers tend to think big deer are solely by property location...rather than learning theyre partially right as in the habitat portion of that..they'll sneak on posted ground or view the whole thing as luck...hard work kills bucks...and self control by NYs hunters would reduce the amount of work expended to bag them.

Age due to a lack of self control is the reason why NY doesnt have more...its that simple...and as mentioned above..dead is dead...they dont grow then. Ready to puke over the classic i hold out for big guys but shoot whatever i can to fill my tag the last week...or the neighbor will shoot them...or any argument other than youre lazy/eager (or live where deer arent)..nice to see a few good posts in this thread on people with a bigger plan and/or understanding

The problem is NYers look at deer hunting like a family of 15 looks at a medium sized pizza...if the damn state did something to manage the herd, or our hunting, we would all have a tendency to feel as if we had an equal sized piece. we have a short season (overall), the opening week of gun is a damn surge of intrusion on the woods foolowed by 2-3 weeks more of people hunting outside of their knowledge and abilities and oyu have to be 14 before you can even hunt here, they dont know the population and have no idea how to manage sea monkeys let alone a big game species...... The season needs to be hortened severly. It is not about how many orange clad folks can smile holding a Genny in one hand and a 5 pt in the other...hunting is more important form managing a game animals population than recreation. Why is land access hard? Because most hunters are slobs. I am embarassed of this fraternity in wNY. Check out your brethern the day before gun openers buying loads of beer or better yet having a scope bore sighted at Gander. Yes, there are archery dumb dumbs buing a bow the day before season...but theyre almost always a gunhunter in the process of growing up...... Happy New Year

Its not about big antlers- its about a changed culture of "gimmee gimmee" lazy bastards. The DEC is anemic due to staffing- the focus from the top just seems to be license sales. Heard of an out of state hunter getting fined 250 for no license...thats less than the damn license! wtf? Called up the DEC on trespassing neighbors shooting within feet of a my house on thanksgiving- tthe eco asked me ho my property was posted (in detail) before agreeing to come out. Fallry sure i have baiting neighbors and they shoot all sorts of 2 yo bucks and show them off....nothing makes me happier than to show them my bigger ones, withing legal limits, and know my kids will be raised right. Just cant change everything....

Divorce is the pits. For the record Culver this is the firts time we've ever agreed. Wow. The guys who gave me the tidbit on where xbow season headed is related through marriage to the Horton guy....so take it for what its worth. Bottom line is the xbox season is for license sales since they lost their arse with the lifetime license debacle....we do not need another means to kill deer. A just my opinion- I wouldlove to see the elderly or physically challenged have access to them but not a one size fits all bow season introduction. Local kid lost an arm and leg in the sandbox cant use a bow w a drawlock and was denied crossbow access....that crap and disheartening. Ohio had guys walking to stands at primetime, obnoxious calling, bait piles (legal there) and just a dumbass approach to trying to kill bucks during prime chase week because the gun hunters know thats the time to be out.... just a joke. A garauntee th enumber of lost deer during archery skyrockets 9though I have no idea how that would/could be tracked). Somedays I surely do have the "does not play well with others" approach. Lots of personal adversity in my life but i am also very passionate about hunting. Its my only hobby. i have been doing a qdm tdm deal in 8g since 99. Lots of learning and challanges. 15 years ago i shot every deer i could, bow hunted a day or two a season and did nothing for mother nature. Lots of change there and have learned most gun hunters do not share the same values I do or that they should. Much rather help than argue...but its easier to show your teeth than your heart, right? -

Hey guys. Was having a rough deer hunting moment there due to some neighbors..not to mention had a tiff with the soon to be ex wife. ??? Nope- theyre not legal now..but a little bird told me some thinsg that were eluded to in my post WNY- do you hunt Ohio. I do. We are no where near Ohio. Their season runs mid sept to mid feb with basically 2 5 day long gun seasons and one buck only. So, this year in Ohio I had the pleasure of hunting the same ground as a crossbow guy. Theyre gun hunters in mentality. Maybe not all but the vast majority. Most pick up dust off and head to the woods. The same mentality is there with woodsmanship. I tend to run with the guys who hunt mature bucks in this area (legally- the other group) and all of them bow hunt and study deer year round. Those guys who have their mosbarger 875 bore sighted the friday before gun openers will be trouncing through the woods douched in tinks 69 with their crossbow now. not to say all bow hunters are in otuch with the deer and the woods- but most are. Most (exclusive)gun hunters are not...and that will be a/thee shift with crossbows. Crossbows are not bows in so many ways. Not only do they not need to be drawn they also offer superior capabilities (read about that pse tac 15) and a superior sight system ..(how many of us have had peep sight issues....thats gone with a scope) and anyone who argues that is just a proponent of crossbows and unrealistic/unknowledgable on how compounds work. So if we can have ohios season layout (even without their agriculture and mineral presence) I will buy you a crossgun wny. -

They'll be legal for you guys to ruin archery season next year....did anyone know the vp of Horton lives in wNY....met with Hurst a few times too. (barf) :'( At least the mismanagment staff is running out of adveristies...... maybe there is a senator accepting letters for deer season all year, or pen shooting with a 50 cal.... -
Any western NY folks appreciative they sold off the pheasant farm on 77..... was acreage we all could have used.... Yup- they manage license sales. Dont you dare ask a deer related question here in region 9 unless you need permits to shoot them out of the normal season.... (love the post above)

Q What does the DEC do to trulymanage game anywhere? A Nothing

As bad as Batavia is, Alden is worse...took 45 min in snow shoes to make it half a mile...the deer were jumping through the snow likes squirrels.....movement was so slow....

first purchased tag should be either sex imo... anybuck needing a buck tag and 1 buck a year... Ars arent the answer but neither is your buck take being 80% 1.5yo or lesser I back them for theyre simple...but we have a laundry list of managment issues here.. (dont get me going on gun season)

So what's so bad about NYS deer management and the hunting season??
gjs4 replied to First-light's topic in Deer Hunting
I will admit that i did nto read the first four pages but felt beyond compelled to reply to the topic/question I guess my first answer would be is it is no where near as good as it could be. SO much potential that is aborted early imo. Notice the thread above this..."Where have the deer gone..". Theyre all hiding because our gun season and gun hunting nature (at least here in wNY) is kill em all. Guys were driving opening day. The pressure on the deer herd here is insane. Deer management? Um..... we really dont have any. The DEC does nto have an accurate bearing on population in any region, county or the state. A portion of that is folks not reporting. The lions share lies with the inability (due to resources/staffing/ability) to do this. When i satarted hunting 5 of us had 1 doe permit for the farm....now each of us have 5 for the same farm. There is nothing managed (imo) beyond license sales. I am a trophy buck kind of guy. This state is the bottom of the barrel. Again- kill em all prevails here. Yes we all see pics of good bucks but very few consistently drop them. Why..because most guys talk the talk and blast the 1.5s or fawns. I am also a bowhunter...and slighted there too. we have one of the shortest seasons in the us. A late start and short run. If you ever want to see what things could be similar to...go to Ohio. Hunt ohio and you will get the feeling NYs deer hunting is like grocery shopping at a 7-11 versus the Wegmans of Ohio. -
This thread is so depressing..it is amazing to see how many lack self control....just gimmee gimmee quick quick.....
