Situation in Baltimore
dbHunterNY replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
bunch of thugs messing it up for the rest of the city. like that mother setting her kid straight. mother of the year right there. also those religious figures of all walks of life linking peacefully driving the rioters back so fires can be put out and order restored. that's a very admirable thing. can't wait for Rev Sharpton to go down and stir the pot, squashing whatever progress those real religious figures have made. -
it's multiple choice so I've picked one answer for each but that's not to say the others aren't applicable. A - currently areas with habitat that is just hard to support much more deer or make it enough of a utopia for them to not disperse else where or simply not make it. not be as healthy and productive, etc. A - this answer was kind of double sided. you can't just increase tags without education. DEC has said they've haven't seen proportional harvest increases with increased tags available. more hunters I know that don't fill DMPs or DMAPs had the opportunity to do so, but passed for whatever reason or just didn't have their stuff together (gun not sighted in, etc.) to punch the tag. you'll always get a few pockets of private land working like a deer safe haven but it evens things out with harvest taking place on neighboring properties from what I've seen (Phade and Moog's spot as an example). a vast majority of private properties are hunted, even the ones you think aren't. state land access can help but often heavy pressure pushes deer into neighboring private property. (I think Fourseasons has probably taken advantage of this with his property). I've taken advantage of it while hunting the fringes of various public lands. A? - not up on turkey stuff as much as deer. I just hunt them. I do know that on our farm we've seen booming years for turkey's and predators just as prevalent. when habitat supported better cover from rotating crop fields, TSI, etc.) near roosting sights and other habitat like late previous season food we saw plenty of poults making it through. seems every year there's plenty of pressure but that seems to be a short term effect that seems to change from week to week. C - beyond contestation. all the conditions can be right and perfect but we can definitely still screw it all up. I've seen alfalfa fields with 50 deer in them turn into housing developments. I've seen nice stands of newer hardwoods that provided tons of mast poorly logs to nothing. then poor harvest choices and other stuff. ...you now know my opinion. hunting trapping predators thing is important only to a degree and to extent. both can and do co-exist but you can't manage one without the other. lots of deer and yotes, followed by a substantial harvest of deer leaves the yotes with limited food source and there's a lag where they'll eat the population down. until they figure out they've got to go somewhere else but now your numbers are temporarily low for a season or two. nature works the same year in and year out. we are the variable that isn't constant and messes with things.

How to wax a bow string by 60X Custom Strings
dbHunterNY replied to 60X Custom Strings's topic in Bow Hunting
I'm not sure what wax you're using but I highly recommend BCY X Wax. I've been using it for several years now and don't ever plan on switching. No need to heat it as it's much more workable... scent free, weather/water repellant formula too. BCY makes the material string makers like 60X uses to make strings, so it only makes sense they'd make wax to work perfectly with the material you've got. it'll cut the time to wax your string in half and think of how many times you're waxing your string. if you're hunting hard that season you should be cleaning and rewaxing your string a little more often to keep out dirt and debris. you can order it straight from 60X. http://www.60xcustomstrings.com/bcy-x-wax-bow-string-wax/ -
How to wax a bow string by 60X Custom Strings

I've bought strings from 60X. very affordable and no complaints. -
same with black bear here in NY especially during the spring. messing with your trash or filled bird feeder after it clearly is out of hibernation and looking for food like crazy doesn't warrant anything.
-
dogs in NY are like bear in Alaska... you better be pulling the trigger with it's teeth clamped down around your arm and gun down its throat. otherwise go to jail. cats seem to be different but still have to be cautious, justified, and know the law.

that is one of the things that is wrong with the SAFE Act. your pistol permit is issued by a county judge and can be taken away only at their discretion as you said and isn't issued or revoked uniformly from county to county or judge to judge within the same county. the SAFE Act basically says if that happens whether convicted or arrested or not nothing matters and you get ALL your guns taken away and the right to have guns period. they get a warrant to search your home and then when they find guns proving long guns are yours versus your spouses is hearsay and they'll probably take them. unless you can show sale receipt or similar proof.

usually Cabelas stuff ships on time or ahead of schedule. I have two pairs of Muck boots and both seem to fit just fine to me. I've got the Artic Sport ones for later season and the Hoser for early bow season.

they don't make Reflex bows anymore similar to Mission (Mathews) or Diamond (Bowtech). Now they're all Hoyt but they do have a cheaper bows offering like the Charger now which was a reflex model back some years ago.

i'll match you and then some.... I'd fight both just to get rid of my mortgage, allowing me to build an addition to have more than just my first 9 month old baby girl. right now i seem to be stuck. as the wife is at home watching the daughter most of the week. lol i'm 6'-0" with reach and all the stats to match my monkey arms and the most I was able to slim down while working on the family farm was to fit comfortably into 34" waist jeans and I still weighed in at 208 lbs. i boxed in college for fun and took martial arts (tae-kwon-do) before that. still beyond contestation each one, on their own, could give me some hard knocks to make me stumbling toward the ropes. all that said i think the first statement about my mortgage trumps the rest of my "stats" ten times over. those lavish lifestyles don't want to mess with that kind of motivation!! hahaha

haven't read all the disagreements back and forth. I've got no doubt Tim McGraw or really even those apart of Sandy Hook Promise have hearts in the right place. They experienced loss that I can't even nor would I want to wrap my head around. I did look into the org and what they're about. some goals are very good but it didn't take long to figure out they're going a bit off the deep end. I truly hope that they won't become another ridiculous ignorant gun control group. Readily apparent they make it seem like they aren't at first glance but that's just not the case. they've taken stance and reference studies that make claims about gun owners that are just stupid. for example, they've taken a stance that implies, if I own more than 6 guns, it's very likely i'll have anger issues and be a lunatic that is mentally on the fence whether or not to go on a killing spree. basically unless you're a monk carrying a grasshopper from a roadway and has never raised your voice above library conversation level, they think you should not own a gun. i'm for probably more "gun control" things then I care to post here. I feel sorry for what they went through more than some forum post on the internet could convey, but judging me as a gun owner won't get there kids back or prevent someone else's "whole world" from being ripped from them at such an early age.

I agree it's disgusting. the fight with pay per view and everything else I heard it's more like 4-5 times that amount.

you're talking a Bald Eagle not a turkey vulture. Obviously if there's a carcass around they'll claim it and accept for anything coyote or bigger not much will mess with it. a bald eagle hunts, fishes, and scavenges for food. a domestic turkey that can't fly probably looks like a butterball to them. a wild turkey poult I could see turning into a meal same as a newborn fawn but I'm sure it's not a normal occurrence throughout the country side. when it comes to coyotes I tend to see more and more often during turkey season and when fawns are dropping. I've had multiple coyotes stalk me while turkey calling and then have a revelation. also I've seen turkeys get the sneak attack from yotes. Most of the time the yote gets close but not close enough. A couple occasions the turkey wasn't quick enough. one was in a wide open hay field. with plenty of food around hammering coyote population is just making them healthier, happier, and more productive. a healthy population of deer can support both a healthy coyote population and your freezer. you still have to keep chipping away at the predator population when you can though. otherwise you'll be dumb, ignorant, and without coyotes only when food (turkey and deer) aren't as prevalent. any predator only hunts where there's food, us included.... most of the time.

yea in today's world it goes beyond that. especially if you've got a pistol permit. don't even threaten somebody or voice your opinion in an aggressive way to the wrong person.

I'd like to see Mayweather get almost knocked out by TKO then get KO'd. I know Manny's record doesn't back up that idea though. I respect his title and accomplishments, but you can't really say he hasn't picked and choosed who he fights to keep title. Obviously don't know him personally, but Mayweather comes across as a douche. He's says he doesn't care about money, yet he flaunts it and has plenty of it, and will especially after this fight regardless of outcome.

heck a FMJ would probably kill a chuck quick too. idk if it's something you'd look into. I've never used them because I've got a .223

hornady has there 125gr sst but not sure you'll find it loaded to shoot flat at varmint stuff unless you load it yourself. not sure others really offer factory loads for varmints either. you pretty much should just roll with the Fusions. something like fox or something else you'd get a pelt out of I'd probably get close and use the 22. otherwise I'd shoot FMJ ammo. it'd still be humane but maybe not blow the thing up nearly as bad.

a lot of people here are making assumptions. I don't I call it how I see it. most the time I see those carts packed full with frozen food and junk food crap that's all per pound waaayyyy more expensive than staple foods like meat, potatoes, and veggies (real food requiring cooking). be much easier to support themselves if those pushing those carts described made better decisions and had better life skills.

you should respect all living things. human beings come before animals. in my opinion social security is a useless system for the distribution of money that we're stuck in. I'd gladly do with out it but I'm not paying it out and not getting it later. as many have pointed out there's losses that go toward paying to process and keep it running.

I've heard from a handful of folks who are in the Midwest taking booners, or very close to it, every year say that with management efforts and natural die-offs they've seen declines in deer numbers. they're getting or seeing bigger bucks supposedly. however, there's concern that they're seeing drastically less do maybe to less deer to begin with and indirectly less chance a buck will "win the genetic lottery". I suppose you add another to that tally. I have a friend that harvested a 203" gross 5.5 year old out in ohio. the friends he was staying with & hunting on said it's the biggest they've seen in years and they're not seeing as many big ones. not sure if others have been hearing this same thing.

I was happy the Hunting & Trapping Regs & Laws Guidelines had a page briefly explaining the difference to tell them apart from other deer. It'd be great to improve upon that. I'm very impressed with our co-op hunters that we've tried to educate to avoid the little guys being taken. Only one button buck was harvested and it was a mercy kill as it was wounded bad. That's damn good for the acreage and number of hunters we've got. Talking with many hunters there were close calls but they slowed down and picked them out.

shoot-n-C targets are probably my favorite.
-
yea I could use a suppressor for some spots but then again I'd have to shoot sub-sonic ammo and I don't want to do that. seems like a nice setup. the extra magnification greatly helps when shooting varmints. 12x makes for a small chuck out over a few hundred yards but you should be more capable reaching out there and farther. I shoot Federal Fusions 150gr out of my 30-06 deer rifle and they seem very consistent. I just got my chuck gun sighted in a week ago.

Anyone Going After Woodchucks Soon?
dbHunterNY replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
"resident owners primarily engaged in farming, lessees and members of their immediate families do not need a hunting license when hunting small game on farm lands they are occupying and cultivating." however, it says you need a license to hunt unprotected species so I'm not sure if one trumps the other. that and being an indian on a reservation is the only exception I know of where you don't need a license. -
Anyone Going After Woodchucks Soon?
dbHunterNY replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
you're definitely right about needing at least a basic small game hunting license to hunt unprotected species like chucks. I don't know for sure but am pretty certain you need a trapper license to use a trap... legally.
