  1. last year wasn't bad I thought. every year I hear ticks are predicted to be really bad. every year I just do what I can to prevent them getting at me and staying on me. i'll be even more diligent due to my little daughter running around.
  2. completely blew by that and didn't even notice. I think I was sit thinking about the Michigan pic.
  3. a simple field point in front of a washer really hammers them. carbon arrows only. they'll bend aluminum shafts heading back to the hole. I really don't use a bow though. I need to keep efficient with the rifle to stay ahead of them. didn't before and one sloped 10 acre field is now completely wrecked. I took probably 50+ there one summer. now that I'm ahead of them, there's still all the holes, so others are quick to move in.
  4. slowly getting more vacation. my parent's have a vacation home in Hudson and I thought about doing a hunt down there for them. just need time and money for other priorities. great pictures. seems like a different world down there compared to the upstate woods of ny. ...almost forgot! congrats on a great bird!
  5. i think Vermont is worse than NY. the Benoit brothers often hunted in Canada and northern NY.
  6. I've sent an arrow from it with several deer under me within 10 yards. i had a ladder stand set into a late blooming apple tree. i shot just over the back at a mature doe that was at 12 yards and had the arrow hit and sink into the muddy trail they'd take to leave. they were startled a bit but never moved a foot. i was dumbfounded. I've made 1" diameter and 3" long wool yarn silencer "puffs" I've got between the strands. then the loop ends of the string are wrapped with the same wool yarn to quiet the contact with the limbs at the ends.
  7. that close quarters situation is limited and more often then not i like being able to send one out there 400+ yards so I'd probably leave it be and match the black hills 60gr vmax load. now that i think about it I've got 600 of the high BC 53gr vmax bullets so I'd probably use those.
  8. yea I'm looking into reloading slowly. I've got components right now for the 223 but still need the equipment. making a cabelas run in a week and will probably pick up some more stuff. eventually I'll probably pick up a turret press. i was going to go with a cheaper single stage but i was told change overs between dies and stuff would make me go nuts. i could probably load down the 223 enough safely if i needed.
  9. yea I've contemplated getting a 17HMR or 17WSM because of the whole populated area thing. even if i have permission it's not my intention to rattle windows. my 223 with 60gr vmax at around 3100fps is a bit too loud for a couple spots on the farm.
  10. my Bear Super Kodiak recurve. sunny day won't worry me about harsh weather getting at it. it's so quiet i might just get a couple shots if need be before something figures out what's going on. sounds like a day to just enjoy the woods and not worry about success. if you said i had to fill a tag then one of my compounds would be in my hands. it'd mean strictly business at that point.... enjoyable but business.
  11. my dad could probably find one of those '76 model year and top eject. I'd like to think he'd hang on to it. it's nothing special to the gun world in the grand picture of that model but it'd mean a lot to both of us and my brother.
  12. it would be my pistols that are registered. seems i might not own anything else. lol i can't very well get rid of something you know i don't own. that said a stainless bolt action 30-06 is a nice all round gun and caliber. could probably find one of those around some where. ....bad for small game you say? you didn't make me give up my bows and they're fine for that.
  13. sightings are low in general now has they're coming out from hibernation and seeking each other out to make babies. I've thought about that before and still do. The over whelming numbers though usually cause me to get as many as I can early before they do. fields get terrorized less that way. still plenty to shoot for youth it seems every year. I would really like film the outings with them this year to share with the rest of the family. everyone always has a ton of fun going after them and it's less hay equipment abuse we have to deal with later on.
  14. yea my multiple fixed pin setups in order from top to bottom go green, yellow, red for that reason of disappearing in low light. also in low light if you have all brighter maybe green pins, or bright pins closer together, the brightness will drown out the darker animal and its background. never the same color for consecutive pins either. might hold the wrong pin on target that way.
  15. I have an Oster with a fan and I think four trays. when I use ground venison and a dispensing gun I fill up all trays to the max with circular rings. takes about 8-9.5 hours for me. it'd take less time if you used only dry seasoning. I use or make sauces for a base though so it takes that long. I get enough consistency rotating the trays just once a few hours or so in. I mean reversing the order of the trays on the stack.
  16. you should be fine enough to get it somewhere. if given a hard time, be polite and ask to speak to a manager and explain the situation. if you've got a cell phone with a camera take pictures. I've known of some bringing in the rifle locked with trigger lock and in a case for the manager to have visual proof. just be sure you're going about it the right way and not just showing up with a gun.
  17. Anyone going after woodchucks soon to pass time before turkey season or simply throughout the summer? Year to year activity on the family farm for us. Seems there's not enough time in the day for smoking out enough holes.
  18. oh yea that season is getting closer every day. I just got my scope back. I lapped my scope rings and now just need to sight it back in. very fun activity and a must on the family farm. great opportunities for success and taking kids out. I shoot a Savage Model 12 stainless/laminated in 223 Rem and topped with a high power Nikon with adjustable turrets and a sun shade. Black Hills loaded with 60gr Vmax seem to work well for me pretty far out there. getting to the point I need to bring a shovel and fill in the holes when I pick them up. some people have told me they eat them but idk. trapper bait and scavenging or predatory bird food is all that eats the ones I shoot.
  19. I still like the simplicity of fixed pins. my fixed are in 10 yard increments starting with 20. some setups I've got 4 pins to get me out to 50 yards and others I've got 5 pins to get me to 60 yards. 5 yard increments must be fairly close together causing the clutter. I've always shot fixed pins with centering pin guard in peep instead of peep allows you to see the trajectory of your arrow and if you'll hit a branch or something. I have the top 20 yard pin centered in the pin guard as that's the pin I'm usually using and so I can fit more of the deer in the sight window. however, it's not nearly as precise as dialing in yardage. I shoot over 300/330 score on 3D courses with regularity now that I shoot a single pin. I think holding the pin on target is more precise and easier than gapping between fixed pins. helps with focus and follow through. hunting with the single pin, if you're in the treestand leave it set for 20 or 25 yards and shoot it. holding a touch low or high to cover many yardages like the others said. if you've got time to dial then do it. I've setup my one bow with the HHA for both 3D and as a backup hunting bow so I was particular. i got the HHA with the dial instead of the slider. i think it's more precise, easier and smoother to adjust, and it'll incur less wear using gears opposed to slider part on part friction. It has a .010" fiber pin and think it is plenty bright enough but allows me to aim very precise. I also got the bigger 2" housing and shoot a 1/4" peep. it allows more light in and fits a more of the animal in the sight window/housing to get you on target quicker. quiver mounting was a little difficult but Tight spot makes a nice bracket that mounts between the sight and bow riser. it's got multiple holes to mount your quiver where you need it.
  20. Even important people within the Crossbow Coalition want it to be included in bowhunting certification. certification being a requirement is inevitably going to happen. I think what GMan said makes sense and could see it happening that way.
  21. I've given away half a dozen bows to get people started in bowhunting. got my wife into hunting. she has her own. a couple cousins and there friends I've tuned their bows and gave them coaching. had a new bowhunter that we basically gave him a guided hunt, tracked deer, and brought him to get it processed. took many younger turkey hunting. this summer I'm taking youths woodchuck hunting and probably will film the outings, which I have no doubts about being successful if they can pull the trigger well enough. i'll be there and coach them through it too and let them use my own .223 cal varmint rifle with dial turrets, bipod, etc. aside from the personal stuff I'm very much involved with multiple organizations that promote youth and first time hunters.
  22. it'll take adjusting but it'll work for your camp assuming you have power and there's not an outage. be sure to wrap the pipes well. assuming you have a wood stove for heat and even if the pipe is radiating heat into your conditioned space, wood is free and elec isn't. the cost is all in use and initial install as you're feeding it with possibly 1/0 AWG conductors depending on if your talking 100 full load amps or 100 amp circuit breaker. homemade jobs using solar to heat/temper the water before it gets to your heater is good too. depends on the rate of return though. also unless you're paying for a long secondary portion of the service getting to the camp, 200A service is the way to go especially if you're using instantaneous water heating. chest freezers and other stuff start to become nice add-ons later on. heck maybe enough of you decide to split a walk-in cooler. not sure what kind of "camp" this is.
