  1. I don't think management decisions should be done as a popularity contest. Any radical changes need to have sound science behind them. Major questions are starting to surface from places like Mississippi where Ar has been for several years. The DEC has said after the trial program, that no biological need can be established at this time for AR. Reasons like "give it a try and see what happens" and "it ought to work" are not sounds ones for making major changes. Especially when the hard numbers from the NY trial offer less then spectacular results for getting bucks to true maturity.
  2. The chart shown looks like slight increases only in 2.5 and 3.5 while the 1.5 is down significantly and a major drop in overal buck numbers. And the 1.5's that are being taken are meeting the AR requirements for points, but are still 1.5 with most likely little basket racks. So you are letting spikes and 4's walk while killing a lot of 1.5 with the best potential for a SLIGHT increase in 2.5 and 3.5 bucks - both of which are still far from mature. Would like to see the past records for the number of 4.5 plus bucks taken vs now. I'm betting the difference is statistically insignificant. Which means AR in those units are not letting bucks get to mature - all they are doing is allowing far few bucks to be taken and padding the rack measurement a bit for those that are. And down the line will most likely lead to the same as MS - a decrease in rack size of the bucks past 1.5 compared to pre AR.
  3. Bring your recurve/longbow - aka a real bow - and a pocket full of cash..
  4. That's me Tony. I agree - it's a great VOLUNTARY program.
  5. Welcome Tony - what part of the state do you hunt? How will targeting the 60% of the 1.5 year old bucks that are 6 point or better in my units of 7j and 7h while letting the same age spikes go lead to bigger racks?
  6. No to mandatory. The recovery can be somewhat controlled by keeping your tether as tight as possible so any fall that may happen is as short as possible.
  7. Congrats!! Looks like you timed it pretty good for after the season
  8. One Fedora, a Howatt Coronado, and 4 DAS Recurves from 48 to 60#'s.
  9. Huge number of gun hunters in NY only hunt the first 7 to 10 days. The opportunity to hunt earlier in generally far better weather may be attractive to many and effect a compromise. It is what Ohio does, and you can still hunt with your recurve, err compound, for 3 months without guns goining off and they manage the herd just fine. Just a thought.
  10. I want to see her truck and farm 1st.
  11. Bubba - Good luck with the draw.
  12. That's the problem Joe - your standards only gives you an animal to KILL every few years. It's the way you hunt and your goal. That's great - for YOU. The issue is you want the rules to change for everyone to model your choices and because you feel (whether you admit it or not) it will make it easier for you. Just because you are satified to eat tags most years does not make those who would like to kill deer regularly any less a hunter or person. Tearing someone else down does not mean you stand higher.
  13. And all either opinion, not backed with any evidence, or just plain invalid. Not a drop of bias in that comment eh? ;D Not a bit! ;D
  14. The hunters from Pa posting on bowsite outnumber those from NY by probably 10 to 1. For some reason, the same holds true threw out the net. So to use pics posted on a forum as any type of guage for anything is pretty foolish. And it certainely does not support the claim that the average buck taken in PA is 3.5 as the 2003 article said would result. It certainley also does not address the point Larry made - NY's bigger bucks do not come from AR regions. Skim all the threads at Bowsite Pa for the last couple years and tell us how the majority of hunters like what Pa has done to their herd. But enough about Pa - how about answering the question I asked:
  15. erussell - Am I missing in that article where they show the stat's backing up that the 3.5 year old average for bucks has been reached that the 2003 article claimed was going to happen? Also might want to take a look at the actual buck take in the early 2000's compared to the last couple years. Also look at the huge number of camps for sale and the hunting supported business that have failed threw out the northern Pa mountain regions. A few more entries in a record book doesn't come close to making up for what they have lost.
  16. In the 3 wmu's around me, just under 60% of the 1.5 bucks are 6 or better and probably close to 90% of the 2.5 are 6 or better. I just don't see how the mandatory targeting of these young bucks while letting the spkikes and 4 go can possibly make a statistical positive difference. The reports from Mi indicate it may actually decrease rack size.
  17. And all either opinion, not backed with any evidence, or just plain invalid.
  18. And who pushed for the compounds to be included? You don't think the manufacturers had anything to do with it? I find a less then 40 year history (compounds) to be anything like the 10,000 years of longbow/recurve or even the 2400 years of crossbows. I would like to see a truly neutral comprehensive poll of both bow and all hunters in the state. Last year there was a petition available for less then 3 weeks at a local bowshop supporting crossbow inclusion in the bow season for handicapped and anyone over 50. 97 signatures out of 115 asked to sign.
  19. Ok - but what about the important part of my post. This demonstrates any kind of success?
  20. Article is from 2004 -just 3 years into the program. My understanding is that now, 6 years later, they have not come close to that 3.5 average age. And the buck take continues to plumment. Couple that with a vanishing herd and fewer and fewer Pa hunters are happy with the program. Pa is losing hunters in droves - do we want to follow their footstep?
  21. That's what I thinks too Doc. I feel one can not answer thw question so that it means anything without giving their opinion on what a small buck is. Just too vague a term.
  22. I asked everyone early on how one answers the question without knowing the definition of little/small bucks. No one answered - want to give it a shot?
  23. To get back on track, I agree 100% on Fred Bear.
