WHats the legality of a treestand on state land?
MACHINIST replied to MACHINIST's topic in Deer Hunting
I didn't mean to imply I thought you were telling me to take them, all I was saying is its easy to be branded a thief when your coming down the tree with someone else's belongings in your hands.I have no problem hunting the area, its state land and thats what it is there for.they are indeed in rough shape, one I doubt has been used in years but there was old boot tracks leading right to the tree and back the same way in the snow.could have been a coincidence or a guy with a deathwish.I will be talking to the law, after what ADK posted they are in serious violation -
WHats the legality of a treestand on state land?
MACHINIST replied to MACHINIST's topic in Deer Hunting
That thread was brought up after I made mine,Never knew it was even on here.I will not touch someone else's stands, they don't belong to me and lets say you go into state land and see someone taking your stand out of a tree. What would you do to him???I can tell you if I went in the woods and someone was taking my stand down(I only have stands on private land) that SOB wouldn't want to come down on the ground with me.I believe in the golden rule "Do to others as you would have them do to you".So I don't want my stuff stolen -

WHats the legality of a treestand on state land?

I use a climber on state land,no worries there.I just see the stands growing into the tree and also have had run ins with a few guys that littered a parcel of state land in one area I hunt in 7J that would actually bitch at guys in the parking lot after a AM hunt because they were near their spot and they had a stand there first. Thanks for the info guys! -
wrong thread

I was scouting some state land and found some really good spots,I also found numerous stands that are in the state and.I know they can come in at anytime and so can I,but what is the law as in leaving them in for years. One stand I am sure wouldn't some out of the tree unless cut out with a saw,3 others are close as the straps are bound into the tree.I know I will be hunting these spots next year and know I will have a problem with a guy or 2 but I thought you couldn't leave a stand in all year.Am I correct?

I know the state land I hunt is in 7J,but irishredneck is right. If you wont use it dont get it.

Wader Recommendations
MACHINIST replied to BKhunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I use the sportsman's guide 5 mm 2000 gram waders. They are pretty good.Non of them are cheap.I am going on 7-8 years on mine and only have one leak that I cannot for the life of me find....till I use them though -
I dont think the DEC cares if you drive 1 mile or a 100 to where you hunt.No offense its just not part of their plan is all

1) shorter barrel or longer barrel on the 12g? (using a 12g mossy 500) have a 18inch bead sight.. and im looking to get a 24-28inch vent rib for turkey. thoughts? **24-28 would be perfect. Some like a shorter barrel and some don't it comes down to personal preference.I use 24 mostly 2) have some incoming bass pro gift cards is the specific call / box i should look into preferably under $50. **Either a box or pot call would be great for a beginner or master.I use both but prefer my pot call to my box. Most box calls are loud and difficult to do subtle calling on 3)I know they "see color" and movement and camouflage tend to be even more paramount than deer hunting. any particular recommendations for the actual process of hunting turkey? **Yes don't move!!LOL Camo is important. Not the actual brand or pattern but just enough to help blend you in.Even in the best camo that's matched to your surroundings if you move the chances of them seeing you are in the high 90%,this is why a blind is a good idea also 4) based on TV ( ) it seems the preferred spot would be small fields / clearings in the woods or power line runs / corn fields. As opposed to being "in the woods" does this apply for NYS? **Turkeys are and can be everywhere.I suggest a few weekends before opening day to go out and sit with binos from a good vantage point(not where you intend to hunt) and watch and listen.See where they go and what their routine is.This will help immensely in learning a turkeys habits and how to set up on hunting them 5) preferred shot size? **I like 4 or 5 shot myself but again, its personal preference and what shot pattens from your gun the best. Also try and pattern all acceptable shell lengths out of your gun. What I mean is if you have a 3 1/2 inch gun the try 2 3/4,3 and 3 1/2 inch shells.A shotgun that pattens better is better than a gun that has tons of power but doesn't put the shot where it needs to be 6) any other tips you would give your son / grandson going for his first turkey season? **Have fun and don't get frustrated,Spring turkey is one of my favorite things to hunt.So much going on,the woods coming alive with smells, sounds, new critters being born wrap it all up into one and that's spring turkey hunting!!!

I couldn't imagine not bowhunting!!! I love to get the gun out just as much as everyone but bowhunting I see way more deer and the weather is usually a little nicer

I have the samick sage and I want to get 35 pound limbs to get shooting good then put the 45 pound limbs back on to hunt one year

My first bird came after a few years of turkey hunting here and there. Not really getting seroius just something to do in the spring when I wasnt walleye fishing.4 years ago something hit me and I got really seroius,I had a friend who loved it so he drove me and showed me all he knew also.We were hunting one saturday late in the day and we set down on each side of a hedgerow at 11 to finish the day where we found a dusting area.after a minute or 2 I heard a gobble across the field about 400 yards to the north. He answered every call I made and was running doing it!! When he got to 100 yards my friend(wo is hard of hearing due to being a machinist in his 60's) said OUT LOUD!!!! "Hey I think I just heard one gobble!!!" I said "NO SHAT SHIRLOCK HE RIGHT THERE!!!" After another 10-15 minutes he closed the gap from 100 to 45 or so but he was in a dip in the field and all I could see was his head and the top of his fan.Something alerted his and he putted and stretched his neck out.Bad move!!! My gun roared and he was gone.I thought "WTF I MISSED HIM!!!" I looked to see if I could see him running and nothing.after a little bit I stood to see him in a pile flapping around where the dip was. That was it,I was hooked for life.I cant wait for the youth season to get my nephew out there and the may 1st si I can get behind the gun!!Heres a pic of my first bird

Well get the popcorn because a trophy in my eyes isn't a trophy in someone elses.I know people that either cant or don't want to hunt as hard as some and a spike or a 4 point makes them light up like our first deer when they get a chance to take one.I would gladly shoot a 2 1/2 if I felt like it(which most years I would) and 99.9% of the years I would take the 3 1/2 because that's a great buck for me and my area. Also its legal and I don't have the time to hunt like I used to.

Magnet maybe??

Gopro's suck unless they are within 10 yards of you.if they are farther than that then they look like they are a ant your shooting them.Go to youtube and type in gopro hunting. You'll see what I am talking about.I bought one of the cams in the link below and it works pretty good.It has a 4x zoom so when your shooting within 30-40 yards its nice. Also when shooting 10-20 yards its like a close up of the shot.
