Coyote callers and new hunter tips
MACHINIST replied to Chef's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
A big thing is getting the attention away from where you are sitting. So if you are calling with mouth calls then I like to have a decoy out. With a remote caller I sometimes use a decoy and sometimes I don't.One thing,on your first calling set call nice and light,if a fox or coyote is close they will get spooked and if they do come out it will be from downwind and then the jig is up.Play the wind just like deer, and keep as still or more still than when turkey hunting.Coyotes are very skittish and it wont take much to set them off in the opposite direction real fast. -
happy birthday

For snow amount I just use the natural gear snow camo cover.I where my regular bibs and jacket and then slip these on when there is snow
-
I wanted to do this to see what wind direction the deer was using when it walks by the cam to get a better idea on how to set up on them

The stand that Kpkot posted in a single wide stand and made about 6 inches farther out/deeper from the tree. One other thing that I know is a problem with 90% of the stand I have is the noise they make where the ladder sections come together so I would make sure they are as good as you can get them. As a machinist and amateur fabricator I am looking forward to seeing your design. One thing I would make sure of.If you plan on selling to the public make sure you have insurance for it.

Yea I have actually scouted 4 days already sinc the last day of muzzleloader.I want to get as much in before the snow gets really deep and its a pain.As soon as the snow starts to melt I will be back out again.I found a really great spot on my lease tonight that I always knew was there but didn't know how nice it was.Its a spot that is super thick but has a few openings in it so I went all through it tonight after work.I found 2 places that I will have a blind in place for next year
-
very true.I have shot it out to 250 and its around 2.5/2.75 inches if I do my part.I shot a buck last year at 225 and the shot was perfect.Whoever wants to laugh in my face go ahead, just let me eat my venison that I killed with that rifle the last few years....mmmmm it tastes good

I have a 308 that I had shortened and a target crown put on.Shoots as good as it did before the barrel cut.I get 1 inch groups with cheap green box ammo
-
His decision and that's it.If he wants to shoot one he can,If he wants to let them walk he can.Its his license and his time after all.Although if I told someone I would get them a deer I would do my best to fulfill that promise even if I didn't want to do it.That's just me

Just like wildcat and stone said.Find that hidden spot that hunters aren't at,a small spot in a marsh thick pine trees or swail grass that others overlook. When a deer knows that people haven't been in a spot in a long time they migrate to it.Don't be afraid to walk a long way either,I know one spot I go doesn't really far but to get to it I have o where hip boots and walk through some serious crap to get in and out.It keeps 90% of the other hunters out of that area and until recently I was one of the only people hunting it till the neighboring land owner started hunting the state land.

WHats the legality of a treestand on state land?
MACHINIST replied to MACHINIST's topic in Deer Hunting
Just talked to the DEC officer. He said nothing after the season is to be left in the state land.He also said if its growing into the tree it needs to be removed either by owner or DEC official. He is going to contact a forest ranger and get back to me but asked if I could take a pic next time I am out there of the severity of how bad the tree is growing into it. -
Looks awesome!!
-
I would have told them about it but at the same time I am not sure if I would want them running all over my land during deer season to retrieve it and mess up my year.Dammed if you do,dammed if you don't sort of thing.

Its never been difficult to me as long as the buyer had a FFL that would accept a shipment from a private party. -

Yes and no,shipping from NY to Alaska would be about 50 dollars or more.I shipped a rifle to Alaska 2 years ago and it was double what the lower states get for shipping.NewYorkHillbilly,if you can find a FFL that will accept a shipment from a private individual it will be cheaper for you in the long rung because it will cut the cost of a FFL here. Most FFL's want a FFL to FFL transfer but some accept a shipment from private transfer.Just make sure you get all info that they need shipped with the rifle.Super nice rifle,GLWS
