  1. Our camp in Redfield a few years back had a DEC officer stop by when we were doing camp cleanup one spring. It was one of the questions we asked him because we can get 100 yard shots on our small parcel of land and the backstop was on state land.He told us while its legal for us to shot that technically we would be in violation if the bullets landed on state land.He could nave been wrong but it prompted us to get a few truckloads of sand as a backstop on our property and shorten the range to 80 yards.Bettter safe than sorry
  2. Heading out now to listen to the woods wake up and to hopefully see some birds where I hunt
  3. EDEITED FOR WRONG INFO Each year you must complete the writen for in the regulations guide by the looks of it. Required Crossbow Hunting Qualification & Safety TrainingThere are 3 options to choose from in order to complete the required crossbow qualification & safety training. All must accompany a NYS hunting license and in some cases a muzzleloading privilege: Option 1: Review the DEC online crossbow qualification training and complete the Crossbow Certificate of Qualification*. Option 2: Review the DEC crossbow qualification training and complete the Crossbow Certificate of Qualification* found in the2014-15 Hunting & Trapping Regulations Guide. Option 3: Complete a Hunter Education or Combination Education course to receive a Hunter Education Certificate of Qualification. Certificates must be dated on or after April 1, 2014 to meet crossbow qualification and safety training. *Note: The Crossbow Certificate of Qualification from 2012-2013 is no longer valid.

  5. Went today to 3 of my spot, not a single turkey track but I am not supper surprised with the water everywhere and the snow melting at record pace.Saw quite a few deer and the beavers are in high gear cutting trees
  6. I think they are full of Shyt.NY is a good hunting state, does NY have truckloads of mega bucks like some states? No but they state isn't geared that way with the way its run.Anyone in this state can go after big deer,I know a few plots of state land within a hour drive that have plenty of great bucks.I myself don't feel the age of a deer makes it great, hell one of my best hunting memories was shooting a doe because I had a family at church that desperately needed meat for their freezer.Getting that deer for them made my year.
  7. I understand what you are saying and agree with you to a point. The weapon is also a tool to me.I also love shooting my bow and do through the winter inside,3D spring summer and fall and hunt with my bow,but I also want the "spice" of trying new things.I feel that the crossbow is as capable/a touch more capable as a good archer with a compound.I don't take crazy long shots with my bow,I like to have them 25 give or take at the longest. There are to many factors in the woods working against the shooter to ensure that a great shot is performed.Small twigs that you cant see from your stand, buck fever, wind gust or a million other things can mess up a great day hunting if you wound a animal. Not that I am saying anything under 25 is a chip shot because when it comes to hunting any animal there is no such thing as a chip shot, but I feel the odds are better in my favor for getting the arrow where I want it to be.Gun hunting is no different,I don't like shooting very far either without a good rest and my composure as much as a hunter can have composure when buck fever starts your heart pounding. My longest shot on a deer was 220 yards(IIRC).I hit the deer low in the heart, still a very fatal shot but could have just wounded and not recovered him.I don't take those shots anymore because I know I'm not the right guy for it.Now at the range I can punch paper out to 400 no problem but that's paper and not a animal
  8. Great story,I would love to go after some out of state birds!!!
  9. He was just yelling at you to take your filter off is all!!LOL awesome pics
  10. Remington 700 in 308 My wife would have a Remington 870 or maybe she would upgrade to a Top of the line autoloader in 3 1/2 mag My daughter would have My savage 10ML11 My oldest dog would have a 7600 Remington in either 270 or 30-06 my middle dog would have a 44 mag smith and wesson 629 my puppy would have a Ruger 10-22 with all the trimmings the cat would have a hi grade bolt in .223 or 22-250 the turtle would have a 9mm or 40 cal compact pistol the fish(you know the ones the turtle eats) would have a array of different shotguns and rifle...you know whatever they may feel fits the bill
  11. For the fact to kill a deer yes if he or his family were starving and had no other means to get food, but around houses and other people not in a million years.Plus if this guy can afford a truck, spotlight, gun and ammo then he has money but just didn't spend it wisely
  12. I didnt know that,That makes a big difference That's not as bad then.If you have a lower your golden
  13. Saw 2 strutters and about 20 other birds in a field today...that got the blood flowing!!

  15. getting closer,My nephew and I are headed out Friday to do some scouting and see if we can see any birds
  16. This year I am going to try roosting them with a coyote howler as well as the old standby's the owl hooter and the crow call.I have also hear of using a hawk screamer and a peacock call.I never had luck with the peacock though
  17. I feel that if I need to talk to god and ask him for something it is a "I really have to have this thing".I would never pray for a deer or anything like that.Seems a little petty to me
  18. So then dont hunt with one, kind of like if you don't like whats on the TV then change the channel or how some antigun people think the world would be better off without guns. Its someones opinion and you know the old saying about that.I know friends that live in 5 states that allow crossbow hunting in their archery season and there is still a healthy amount of hunters that use compounds and traditional archery equipment. So I don't see how you can say that crossbows will be the death of archery in NYS.
