  1. Back in the day when I had to use slugs in a smoothbore, Brennekes gave me the best accuracy and the best terminal performance... WAY better than foster type slugs...
  2. I have tied a lot of flies using both turkey wings and tails wings and tails... Mostly nymphs....
  3. There is a much greater selection of factory loads available now than when I had my 7x57s fifty years ago... I was a neophyte reloader then, also...I suspect that if you try a number of the factory loads available now, you will find one that shoots well in your rifle... Good luck, My Friend....
  4. I have had no experience with the M70 in 7 x57...I have had 2 rifles in that chambering, a M1895 Chilean Mauser and an early tang safety Ruger M77..Both were very long throated and both shot 175 grain factory loads very well, but did not group so well with my (amateur) handloads of 140 grain bullets.. I learned after I had sold them both that if I had loaded 160 or 175 grain bullets WAY out in the case I may have got better accuracy... In any case, it is a fine chambering, with ballistics very similar to the popular 7MM08... Perhaps the M70 is shorter throated to perform better with some of the lighter ( 140 grain) bullets...Either way, even the 175 grain factory loads aren't a bad choice within 300 yards...Those long bullets are awesome performers on game...
  5. I have floated, walked and waded most of that stretch, either fishing or duck hunting.... Many Sunday afternoons I would be at the legion to welcome you...Spent this weekend helping my son in law build a new chicken coop...
  6. Babcock Hollow to the Campbell legion ??
  7. Cohocton River ?? Never heard of it...…<<grin>>…..

    Baby Biz

Congratulations to you and your lovely bride, Biz !!
  9. # 1 Turkey wing feather #2 turkey tail feather...….FINAL answer....
  10. While anticipating my very first true wilderness hunt, the thing that I most looked forward to was to be on the tundra, in the middle of nowhere, all by myself... I had a partner on the hunt , but he is also a solitary hunter, and we hunted in different directions, teaming up when there was game to be taken care of....
  11. I do most of my turkey hunting from a blind now, but for many years I did a run & gun ( or rather walk and talk) hunt, often before work in the morning...There was never a time I felt so free as when I listened to the woods wake up from the top of a ridge far from the road....I used to think about how much other people were missing who were still in bed....I always felt I could hunt much more effectively by myself... Having another person along creates the need to socialize, and it takes away from the hunt, at least if it is a mobile hunt...Sitting in a blind is a bit different... Still, I hunt solo about 95% of the time, and that is when I am happiest...
  12. It's also being offered in 38-55, which is appealing to nostalgia buffs like yours truly...
  13. You certainly will not be disappointed with the chambering...
  14. Fine old shotgun...A H Fox shotguns were made to last forever...The parts were actually designed to " self adjust" as they wore.. The Sterlingworth was the field grade or workingman's grade Fox double, and is more common than the more expensive higher grades... Still if it is unaltered and in good condition it is a valuable shotgun...I do not have a current blue book, but I'm sure some members here can find a value...Good luck if you decide to sell it.. BTW...Most gun shops will give you perhaps half ( or less) of what it is worth...
  15. Standard poodles are wonderful dogs....The minatures and cross ankle biters ( peekapoos, etc.) are an abomination and should not even be considered as " dogs"....
  16. I have never had any bears or coyotes act aggressively toward me either, Bill..They always vacated the premises pronto as soon as they saw or smelled me.. However, it would only take that one renegade in a thousand to ruin your day big time...With bears there is always a chance of encountering a sow with cubs, triggering aggressive action in defense of her cubs.. A friend of mine did have a big black bear act aggressively toward him, and there were no cubs involved, at least none that he saw...The bear growled and popped it's teeth at him...Fortunately he was carrying a shotgun with slugs, and after he fired a couple of rounds close to the bear, it reluctantly moved off... Good to know about the DEET... Repels bears AND bugs....Hehehehe…..
  17. Besides that....You want to live forever ??….Quit smoking yet ??... As por MOI, I intend to live forever....So far, so good.....
  18. They also hate a .357 Mag, which is usually the minimum caliber I carry when hiking...Back when I was doing a lot of hiking to keep in shape for hunting trips, I usually carried a Garand M1 or a Yugo 8MM Mauser, to add to the workout.... Besides that, my hiking companion was a 105 pound lab cross named Gersh….Gentlest dog you ever saw toward people or other dogs, but he'd turn a coyote , a coon or a woodchuck inside out and I'd wager a bear would think twice before taking him on...
  19. You got the wrong guy..It's Stormy ( or whatever he is calling himself today) that is Wilson......
  20. Actually, the most traumatic part of the trip for me was when I lost my corkscrew and was forced to live on food and water for several days...
  21. I once paddled 50 miles up the Cialis River to the base of Viagra Falls in deepest, darkest Africa... Actually the paddling was done in dugout canoes by 20 native packers...I was hired to ride shotgun and protect the party from angry hippos, crocodiles, and other savage beasts.. The journey ended in failure...One of the packers had a psychotic pet gorilla named BOBO, who bore an amazing resemblance to Mike Tyson... One night Bobo got into the fermented banana juice and went wild and bit off the ears of all of the native packers.... Actually, it didn't seem to bother them all that much, except for one poor nearsighted fellow who could no longer wear his glasses....Bobo didn't get me because I was packing my trusty Westley Richards loaded with DumDum bullets...
  22. I think they got the name " Boonie Hat" because they were popular with Special Forces, spooks and Ranger units in Vietnam, who spent lots of time out in the "boonies"....
  23. Yeah, but it was a SHEEPSHEAD....Hehehehe... On a serious note, Howie and I want to extend a big THANK YOU for showing us a great time, and for the fish....You guys really have your s**t together, and you are great guys to fish with...Tell Steve Howie wants to marry him... WE had a slow last morning yesterday...Tried down below first and struck out, so we came back and fished right out front and managed to scrape up four....No biggie..I still have more walleye filets in my freezer than I have ever had before.. I gotta rest up today..Four days in a boat on Erie is tough on us old fat guys... P.S.....CONGRATS to you guys on finishing in the money !!
  24. Skaneateles is now on the back burner,,,,Weather conditions on Erie look very good the next few days, so my buddy Howie and I are heading out to Dunkirk tomorrow.....
