So good news so far this season no accidental shootings
Pygmy replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Nobody ever shot ANYBODY while cleaning a gun.... Reminds me of a local incident many years ago near here when the wife of a DEC officer "accidently" shot him with his handgun...It was a double action .38 revolver....She was "looking" at his revolver and it accidently discharged TWICE....One round hit the woodwork beside him and the other drilled him through a lung..Fortunately, it was loaded with old fashisioned round nose lead bullets and he survived the wound...In fact a month later he was out on Catherine Creek arresting violaters with a drainage tube still attached to his chest.... Seems the old boy was a womanizer and his wife was waiting for him when he got home late from one of his dates... He chose not to press charges and the shooting was recorded as accidental... -
Just as an aside....I few years ago, one of my friends, who processes deer every year, made the comment that he could skin a deer by hand in 5 minutes...Another fellow bet him a beer that he could not... He skinned the deer completely in 4 1/2 minutes, and that included taking about a half minute beer break halfway through...

You guys are talking about "meat cutter" caping, not fully caping where you skin the face down, do lips, tearducts, etc... That would cost considerably more than $25 or $30... However, most normally cut up close to the head a and peel the hide down, either by hand or with a truck or atv... Doing the "meatcutter caping", where they cut below the forelegs and skin up to the head, and then cut off the head, takes a few minutes more and is worth the $25 or so extra...

That ain't no Lady..That's MOOG in DRAG !!….

Most any projectile is deadly if delivered to the heart/lung area with enough energy to disrupt them.. However, there is no evidence that a .410 slug is more accurate than a 20 or a twelve...In fact, to my knowledge, there are no rifled .410 barrels that are made specifically for big game hunting....It is a pipsqueak compared to a 20 gauge or a 12... Both are much more powerful rounds...
-
Do you have an 18 year old daughter..? Lots of room in my blind... I always enjoy getting a young person off to a good start...
-
As deadly and more accurate..??..Sorry, my friend...That is an old wives tale.....

He'll be fine.....Congrats on your deer, Tommy....

Back when I was shooting slugs through smoothbores, most of my hunting was done with a scope mounted 20gauge skeet gun....My go to slug was the Win SX 5/8 oz. foster slug...I could group on an 8" paper plate at 75 yards with that...Then Win started making 3/4 oz. slugs for the 20 gauge..My gun did not like them...I settled on Fiocchi Brennekes I believe they were a 7/8 oz or perhaps even a 1 oz. slug in the 20 gauge...They were the best performers in the 20 gauge in my gun, both for accuracy and terminal performance... About that time, rifled slug barrels became readily available...I bought a cantilever, rifled barrel for my 12 gauge 1100 and never looked back... Then rifles became legal here, and I have not hunted deer with a shotgun since..

Why is a Rem 700 better than a Ruger American?
Pygmy replied to jmark's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
The last Rem 700 I bought was around 1990....Fit finish and accuracy are fine....After that, I can't tell you from personal experience... -
Pumpkin balls were even before MY time !! They were cast undersized so they would go through a tight full choke , and were notoriously inaccurate, or so I heard.. I shot my share of paper shells...I can still remember when Remington first started making plastic shells, in fact I have a few of the early production in my " collection".... Remington ran an add that if one of their new plastic shells failed to function, they would send you 100 shells free...Sure enough, I had a 16 gauge shotshell that misfired...Bad primer, I guess, because the firing pin put a deep dent in it and it did not fire...I sent it in and Remington sent me four full boxes of shells..That was a pretty good supply for a kid with a 16 gauge single shot..

When Airedale and I started hunting, the only slugs available were Foster stlye and Brennekes... Many old timers referred to Brennekes as " Them GERMAN slugs"....Hehehe....
-
You beat me to it, Al....My cabinet has quite a few factory loads that don't match the containers... I also have a bunch of shotshells with the markings worn off, mostly 3" turkey loads...Hehehe...

Guys like you are the reason we can't kill any big bucks in NY....Hehehe...

MOOG ??...

It was down in the gully across the road from my home in Tuscarora Township...The gun was a Win M 37 single shot in 12 gauge...It had no bluing on it because my uncle had stripped it but had never got around to bluing it.. I was shooting paper Super X slugs that were given to me by good friend Jimmy Randall, who, BTW was killed in action in early March of 1971 in Vietnam...

I recalled today that I shot my first buck deer on the day after Thanksgiving in 1966... That was 52 years ago.....He had a spike on one side and a fork on the other...I was so excited that I did not realize he had a fork, and kept dragging him by the spike for about 200 yards uphill...The spike kept slipping from my hand and I had blisters before I reached the top...It was not until I went to tie my tag on his antler that I realized he was a 3 point rather than a spike..

Buck of a few THOUSAND lifetimes....Incredible...

First, let me say I know I am stupid getting involved in this...<<sigh>>... However often a larger caliber with a heavier bullet does LESS tissue damage than a smaller , lighter constructed bullet at higher velocities... One of it's advantages is, that it is more likely to exit, making for a better blood trail... Often the smaller cailbers don't exit, and if it is a bad hit that makes for a tough tracking job...I don't think a .338 Mag hit center lung kills a deer any quicker than a .243 center lung... However a deer gut shot with the bigger gun probably will be easier to track..

I don't think the 45-70 is overkill compared to the .444...They are both in the same ballpark.. I'd favor the 45/70 because it is a significantly important historical chambering, and for ammo availability and a wider selection of loads...There are quite a few good hunting bullets available in .45 cal , while most .44 bullets are designed for handgun velocities and would tend to overexpand or even disintegrate at .444 velocities... The only suitable hunting bullet I can think of for the .444 is the 265 grainer that was designed for that cartridge...There is a pretty good selection of 45/70 bullets from 300 to 500 grains...
