    I am not an avid deer hunter, nor am I a trophy hunter, but opening day of deer season has always been the most SPECIAL day of the year....

    I'm too ignorant to post pictures and I don't own a smart phone, but opening day I'll have my Rem 700 Mountain rifle ( blued/walnut) in the blind with me … It's a 7MM08 and I shoot my own handloads with 120 Barnes TSX bullets.. Wears a 2x7 Burris.. After that, I may swap off with my Win M70 lightweight in .280 Rem ( fixed 6X Leupold)... I have also been known to take my M1 Garand to the blind to use on closer shots better suited to its issue sights, back up by one of my scoped rifles for longer shots..

    My buddy from North Carolina gave me a bottle of Kirkland's blended Canadian whiskey...I had to break the seal and make sure it wasn't spoiled... It's actually quite good....Smooth like Crown, but with a little bit of a bite similar to Jack....

    I felt the same way when I was in my 20s, 30s, and 40s..Remembering some of my DIY Alaska trips especially... Growing older, I have become more aware of my mortality..It would scare the shit out of me today...

    That is a definite possibility , especially with a lever gun that is usually cleaned from the muzzle...Some gorilla who feels he needs to scrub hell out of the barrel every time he fires a round or two could have damaged the barrel with a cleaning rod..

    Sounds to me like barrel problems ( perhaps a damaged crown) or something SERIOUSLY loose either in the scope mounts , bedding screws, or elsewhere....

    Yeah, Dubby, I was going to tell you that some unscrupulous person sabotaged your rifle and put the bolt on the wrong side... Hehehe...My ex -wife and daughter are both southpaws..I used to pick on them about being handicapped..

    When my Mom and Dad were still alive and owned the farm, my version of deer camp was having 3 or 4 friends up to hunt the property the first few days... My Mom always made a big kettle of homemade vegetable beef soup....

    The Brenneke type slugs are far superior to foster type slugs... The fosters often do not penetrate well....Brennekes do... When I was hunting with a 20 gauge my favorite slugs were Ficocchi brennekes...Got nearly end to end penetration on a couple of deer...That never happened when I was using foster slugs... Eventually I switched to a rifled 12 gauge and BRI sabot slugs...They were good penetrators also, but the blood trails weren't as good as with the brennekes..

    The local gun club is within hearing distance and I have been hearing rifle shots from that direction on a daily basis.. Checked out the 7MM08 and the .280 and both are spot on, about 2"high at 100...Most shots from my tower are between 100 and 250.. Going up today to make sure the heater is working in the tower...My buddy has been xbow hunting the property near our food plot..He saw 19 deer last night, including a 6 an 8 and a big 10..

    Very cool, Larry....I guess that shows that a fisher will eat anything...About the only thing I know that eats them are other possums or vultures...Owls don't even like 'em and they LOVE skunks !

    Shotguns are carried extensively by Game Wardens , fishing guides and private citizens in Alaska...They are light and offer a decent degree of protection when chances of having to use one to defend yourself are fairly low.. However, I think if you take a poll of guides who actually take hunters after brown/grizzly bears and stand a real chance of having to stop a charge or prevent a wounded bear from escaping, you will find that most of them carry a medium to heavy caliber rifle...The .375 H&H is very popular, and various .416s and .458s are quite common also.
