2017 live from the lake , ocean , pond , stream, river thread
Pygmy replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in Fishing
The summer fly fishing should be excellent this year due to all the rain we have had, as opposed to the drought conditions of last year.. I have little experience with Adirondack streams, but I remember a summer a few years back when we had higher than normal water conditions..The fly fishing on the Cohocton was great all summer..One afternoon in August two partners and I landed 65 browns , all on dry flies.. Good luck, Tacks ! -
COOOOL !....Hehehe..

Simple answer....Growie probably TASTES better than you do, Chris...

She's a shooter for sure....I am a big fan of the Barnes "X" series of hunting bullets and have been using them exclusively in my 3 main hunting rifles, specifically the 120 grain in my 7MM08, the 140 grain in my .280 rem and the 250 grain in my 9.3 x 62... Perhaps Lawdwaz will chime in and post a picture of an 80 grain TTSX that entered the brisket of a whitetail and he found it in a ham...Durn near penetrated the whole deer from stem to stern, and it's a perfect mushroom...

The Kingston Armory 22 M1 Garand
Pygmy replied to airedale's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Pretty cool, Al....! My 1943 vintage Springfield Armory M1 Garand is about 2 feet from my left hand SMILING at me as I type this... Looking forward to your report ! -
What history is there in North America of coyotes killing an adult human ? I know of one, a female singer who was killed in Quebec a few years ago...She probably ran... I'm old and fat and I'd take on any coyote in the woods with a stick and a rock.....I'd rather have a firearm, however, and I usually carry one when I am out and about, so that is a moot point..

I have always been fond of snappers....<<grin>>... I have a recipe that IMHO is better than any turtle soup ( and I have sampled at least 6 variations of turtle soup)... The turtle is roasted , or perhaps braised, and you really get to enjoy the flavor of the turtle, rather than the flavor of the many other ingredients that most turtle soups consist of.. However,,Preparing a turtle for the table is a PITA...I have done perhaps 3 or 4 dozen of them and it still takes me a half hour at minimum to butcher one... If you want the recipe, let me know...Otherwise, just keep enjoying them when you find them..They are very good, but I have eaten my last one...They are one of nature's great survivors..

Fisher denied. Don't mess with my cat!
Pygmy replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Fishers, like most wild predators, are not looking for a fight...They are looking at getting some protein with the least amount of energy AND the least risk of injury involved,,, I have seen an aggressive 10 pound housecat take on a 40 pound springer spaniel and send the dog running for cover.. I think the fisher was very prudent in making a rapid retreat....It was probably well fed...If it were starving, the results may have been different.. -
One of the things that I noticed was the size of his talons/feet compared to your hands... I still think he is a red tail, probably an immature.. The other two similar birds, the red shoulder and the broadwing, are perhaps half the size of a red tail, and I think that they would look considerably smaller compared to your hands.. Raptors are a challenge...They tend to vary quite a bit even within a certain species.. I am also no expert, just an interested observer..It would be interesting if you could get an educated ID from the folks that took the bird...
-
Hard to be certain from this angle, but I am about 90% sure it is a redtail hawk, judging from the size of the head, talons, etc.. Redtails hunt roads very often, preying on both roadkill and critters crossing the road..They are frequently victims of vehicles due to their hunting habits..

A " Watch Cat".....How cool is THAT ??.... Thanks for sharing, Jerry... -
I'm planning to do a two acre murder plot in oats right between two existing clover plots. I may overseed that with clover also and just go with just the clover next year...

My 50th HS reunion is next year... We had about 100 graduates, which at the time was the most ever from my high school (baby boomers).... We lost 2 or 3 to car wrecks, 4 or 5 to the Vietnam war, and lately, a few to natural causes.... Hopefully we will have a good turnout next year... Crossing my fingers that I will be one of them...<<grin>>....

Congrats,Kids....You have done well !

Your lovely bride's rifle is MUCH prettier than yours...I like laminates almost as much as walnut and MUCH better than birch or some of the other plain woods that have been used.. -
I'd rather juggle rattlesnakes....

No thanks....I'd rather do something less hazardous, like disarming land mines while blindfolded...<<grin>>....
