  1. CONGRATS !!.....A fine looking young lad !! You will have a hunting partner before you know it..
  2. Hell YES !! I wish I had been smart enough to buy mine at that age...It costs me close to $100 a year for my hunting priveledges... Go for it, Born...Unless you get run over by a truck in the next 5 or six years, you'll be money ahead before you know it..
  3. Most of the growth is complete by the end of July...During August they are just hardening, and by Sept 1st some have already shed velvet.
  4. When I got married, there were no game seasons open in September, and I was years away of even THINKING of hunting elk, moose or caribou, so I figured that Sept 4 would be a safe date... Then about 20 years later, I started going on big game hunts in Alaska, the Rocky mountains and northern Canada, many of which occur in September.. So it happened that on several of my wedding anniversaries, I was in the wilderness somewhere in North America instead of at home celebrating with my wife.. Do you suppose that could be ONE of the reasons I'm no longer married ?......<<sigh>>..... Oh WELL.....<<sheepish grin>>....
  5. Many years ago, when lead shot was the only option readily available and turkey seasons were first initiated in New York, some bureaucrat decided that the range of legal shot sizes for turkey hunting should be #2 to #8.... The reasoning was probably because shot larger than #2 was considered more dangerous than smaller shot in case of an accidental shooting, and shot smaller than #8 was considered too small to be effective on turkeys...It was an arbitrary decision at that time and simply never has been changed to allow for some of the modern shotshell technologies.
  6. Not to rain on your parade, but I have never seen smallmouths do well in a pond, and seldom perch....The sunfish would be fine... The old fashioned bluegills and largemouth combos do well...
  7. I can see where your daughters got their good looks, Larry... From their MOM.....<<grin>>.....
  8. Happy Father's Day to all... Yesterday would have been my Dad's 96th birthday, if he were still alive.. He's been gone 23 years and I still miss him every day....He was my hero....<<sigh>>.....
  9. Kill the sumbitch.....He'll be nothing but trouble...I have been dealing with them undermining my utility shed for a year...Good luck !!
  10. I recognize the knot that the guy used to tie off the end... It's the double step over Japanese cock knot... My Uncle Lance taught it to me...He learned how to do it at Dirty Edna's Bath House in San Francisco... I was surprised to learn that they made sausage in a bath house.. I figured they just took showers and stuff. I's ask Uncle Lance about it, but he died from Aids a couple of years ago..
  11. Certainly not a very good picture....Thanks for sharing, Jerry... Funny thing, I haven't heard any pumacougar stories around the Legion lately..Usually summertime is when you hear them, when it's a little tougher to find physical evidence, such as tracks.
  12. It's going to be hot this weekend and the lakes will be crowded..I'll look for a cooler day or two next week.. I'll probably also target either bluegills/sunfish or perch..Both are hitting well right now.. Bass are lots of fun to catch, but I prefer the panfish to eat..Also, we generally catch a fair number of bass incidental to our panfish...
  13. I have a limited amount of experience on Cayuga, but have done well launching at Dean's Cove State launch on the west side north of Taughhannock. Most fishing I have done there was vertical jigging for lakers and we did well in about 80-100FOW perhaps a mile north of dean's Cove launch.. I also launched at Taughhannock and we got a bunch of BIG lakers jigging Northland rattle spoons and diamond jigs in about 100 FOW. Many of the locals favor 1-2oz, jigheads and plastic flukes( usually white) for jigging for lakers, but most of my experience has been with metal jigging spoons. Cayuga has excellent fishing for landlocks, rainbows, browns and lakers, and I suspect that many of your standard trolling presentations will work, downriggers, dipseys, wire or thermocline rigs like the good old fashioned Seth Green rig...
  14. What am I thinking ? As big as Moog's arms are, he'd have pattys the size of pizzas...Retract the above statement...
  15. You don't need a press, Moogie... #1 grab a handful sausage in right hand #2....Raise left arm #3 Stuff sausage in armpit and lower arm to press.. VOILA !! You have a lovely patty...All you have to do is pick a few hairs off it and throw on grill or freeze...
  16. My mother would KILL for a mess of bullheads.....
  17. Smokein TN.....Jeff.. The local snake expert was Walt Young..Remember when he had his sign shop on Market ST ?....very knowledgeable gentleman when snakes were involved...
  18. Come on out, Curmudgeon....I can take you out in the Cameron/Cameron Mills area and find you one in short order... A local snake expert ( now deceased) told me that that area has the densest timber rattler population in NYS....Now that they are threatened, the DEC is managing the area with the snakes in mind... Lots of snakes in some places in PA also...A friend of mine and his wife rode the bike trail along Pine Creek between Ansonia and Blackwell a couple years back and saw 17 timber rattlers along the trail....he had some some very cool pictures to share..
  19. Red tails eat snakes, too...I have seen several of them do it...Of course, the red tails are so voracious and I think they will take ANYTHING they can kill.. I have seen them attack adult woodchucks and an adult hen turkey, which was OPTIMISTIC to say the least..
  20. Don't feel alone, Clayshooter...Fear of snakes is the second most common phobia in this country, next to fear of heights.. Snakes don't bother me, although I would not care to share my sleeping bag with one...I am, however VERY much scared of heights...Put me up on a ladder and I useless...All I can do is tremble and hang on... My most common nightmares involve being stuck up on cliffs or high buildings with nothing or little to hang on to..
  21. A coyote somewhere has a mouthful of feathers.....
  22. The good news is that the timing is perfect for the turkey hatch...Warm dry weather the first three weeks of June is critical, since the average hatching date is around June 11th or thereabouts according to a study made a few years back.
  23. I see your shirt, Tacks....Naraggansett....I drank quite a bit of that in Newport, RI back in 1971-73 when I was working for Uncle Sam.. I also caught some big blues and stripers right off the destroyer piers....Loved the place, except for the snobby ass local girls who wouldn't even talk to you if you were a sailor.. I don't think they aware of the PURE thoughts that were going through my mind at that time..........Pure LUST !!...hehehehe....
