  1. He might be closer than you think..Has your wife been SMILING a lot lately ??...
  2. What the heck is a pheasant, and what the heck do they have to do with fall turkey hunting ?? Youse guys must live in a different woild......Hehehe...
  3. I am so glad that I hunt in an area where I don't have to compete for parking spots.... The second day of spring season this year I drove around a nearby 900 acre plot of state game land...There was one truck parked there ( with PA plates)....It is prime turkey woods, also.. Must be most guys are are not interested in hunting these poor, stupid, naaive private land and lightly hunted public land gobblers...
  4. Threw in the towel about 10:00 AM ....This was my 49th NY gobbler season and I never took my safety off... I had several chances to shoot the same three jakes and passed...I named them Keith, Larry, and Dumbhead after three of my buddies at the Legion... Lots of hens seen in early and mid season ( 9 in one day) so I hope they are busy incubating little turkeys for next year...I only missed being in the woods before daylight 6 times this season... Time to go fishing....
  5. Happy Birthday, My Good friend...!!! Hope ya get lucky <<wink>>......
  6. So " Mr. Big doesn't see your eyes ".... Do you hunt with your fly unzipped, Bill ..??...Hehehe...
  7. I don't know what the issue is, but most of my local buddies are having the same problem...Just NOT hearing the gobblers..I friend down in North Central PA ( Potter and Lycoming Counties) says the reports are the same down there.. Unless I get lucky and tag a last minute bird, this will be only the 3rd season since 1975 that I haven't tagged at least one spring tom in New York...
  8. Those birds have sure laid a can of WHOOP-ASS on my mangy old butt this season.. I haven't even had my safety off..Was seeing plenty of hens and a few jakes and I expected a longbeard or two to show up, but the property has gone completely dead the last few days... I intend to take a couple of mornings off to re-charge my batteries and go out one last time Monday...It ain't over until the fat lady sings, but I can hear her warming up..
  9. The Hound of the Baskervilles... Most definitely a dog...
  10. Thanks for the tip...I'll try that !....
  11. Yogi must have thought that my popup blind was a PIC-A NIC basket.... Sumbitch tore out the front and port side of my nearly new Ameristep Doghouse blind... It is the second blind I have lost to a bear since I have been hunting The Mermaid's property....Glad I didn't invest $300 in a Browning or another top end blind... My opinion on bears is changing..They are a pain in the ass around the property.. The next one I see during season is getting shot...I don't care much for the meat, but I have a couple friends who would gratefully accept it..

    Snake id

I am somewhat surprised that some of you think it is unusual for a milk snake to be aggressive/defensive... Many of the ones I have encountered would strike quite readily... Not as bad as water snakes, though...Those damn things have a flat out nasty disposition....
  13. One time years ago I stripped down and went overboard in Seneca Lake in June to retrieve a lost fish basket with to limits of bass in it.. I got it, but it was so cold that it took a week for my testicles to migrate back to my groin from my armpits....
  14. I was on the USS Moale DD-693, and we were home ported in NY, first at Brooklyn Navy Yards and later at Fort Schuyler, Bronx... However, we spent a couple of months a year in Newport, tied up alongside the Destroyer tender Puget Sound, receiving repair and maintenance work from them that we could not do ourselves.. I loved Newport...Lots of good fishing right on base.....
  15. Good luck !!.. The first time I fished for stripers was from the destroyer piers at the Naval Base in Newport, RI., in the spring of 1971.... Is that where YOU are fishing ??
  16. When I read the title I thought perhaps you were using camouflage condoms....
  17. Hide in a furrow and make a noise like a nightcrawler....
  18. Skaneateles is a beautiful lake, You'll love it...I fished it last year with Otto a couple of times..We were targeting perch, but we caught plenty of smallies also...
  19. I didn,t hunt this morning because I had to take my Louisiana guest to the airport....It was only the second time this season I wasn't in the woods before daylight.. I was a little bummed not being able to be out there on such a nice morning , but now that hardly anybody is hearing anything, I don't feel so bad... Maybe they'll gobble tomorrow...
  20. Not enough firepower (only holds 4)......
  21. I've been hunting gobblers nearly 50 years, and this is the worst early season I have ever seen....Very little gobbling and the birds that do gobble on and off are not cooperating...It's not just me, either...Most of my local friends who are hardcore gobbler hunters and generally limit out year after year are having the same luck, or rather, lack thereof... I have hunted every morning except one and have heard just one gobbler on the roost within calling range, and he shut up as soon as he flew down... I am hoping the approaching warming trend will get some hens on the nest and the gobblers will turn on....
