  1. Grampy and Doc mentioned using their binoculars...They are an invaluable tool for stillhunting. They really help you to "pick apart" the cover and focus THROUGH a lot of brush and cover...They are not just for long range viewing either.. They are just as useful at 30 or 40 yards as they are at 200, scanning every bit of cover within your view , peeking way back into tiny openings in the brush looking for a flicker of an ear, a patch of white, or perhaps an antler tip... I move a short distance and then stand an scan for several minutes with my binocs...Then I take a few steps and repeat the process...
  2. Good luck..Make sure you don't hit a ham... I'd stay away from shoulders, too, with that bullet.. I imagine it will be devastating if you hit 'em in the ribcage...
  3. By the way, I looked up the word lawdwaz in the Kraut/American dictionary.. It's from an old Prussian term meaning " Turd Poker".....
  4. I shot a buck with a roman nose...He looked just like Tony Soprano's uncle Junior...
  5. This brings to mind an old local fellow, now passed on, who was an avid hunter and shooter... Nearly all of his firearms, including , but not limited to expensive skeet and trap guns, showed the signs of his "customization" both on the metal work and the wood.. His first name was Mort, and the common joke around the gun club was that all of his guns had been " MORTIFIED"....
  6. 7600......Do your hunting buddies call you " Stubby" by any chance ? Some of my old girlfriends used to call ME that, but they weren't referring to my firearms...
  7. Nothing even close, out of perhaps 120 deer or so...I killed one buck that was probably a 3.5 year old ( 175 dressed).. I never weighed many does but I doubt I ever killed one that dressed more than 130 or so... I have seen quite a few deer on the scales and the heaviest I ever saw weighed was a buck that weighed 185 dressed.. Must be these deer along the PA border run lighter than other parts of the state.. A deer that dresses out at 200 pounds is pretty rare around here, at least when they are weighed on the scales rather than with the eyeball...I know people who claim to kill 200 pounders frequently, but for some reason those 200 pound deer seem to lose weight when hung on a set of scales and the 200 pounders lose 40 or 50 pounds...
  8. "exurban"....I learned a new word today..THANKS, Philosop... At first I thought you might have made that word up..<<grin>>....
  9. Me neither, Grampy, but one of my hunting partners killed one with an 18 inch spread down in Potter Co. Pa a few years back.
  10. I generally use a shotgun the first few times out in early season.. When I get a few packages of squirrel in the freezer, I switch to a rifle.. So far this year I've taken 17 with the 16 gauge, 9 with the Ruger 10/22, and 3 with my NEA .17 MachII.... Both my squirrel rifles are scoped..I have a Burris fixed 4X compact on my 10/22 and Leupold fixed 4X on the .17 MachII...
  11. Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun... That the reason I'd never own a TC Contender/Encore.. They are ugly as a side order of s**t....
  12. To each his own...I'm not crazy about those stubby barreled blasters.. 22" seems ideal for ME in a standard caliber..I love my Rem 700 Mountain rifle in 7MM08 and wouldn't want it any longer or shorter.. If I wanted a magnum chambering (which I don't) I'd prefer at least a 24" barrel..
  13. The .270 Win earned it's fine reputation with relatively slow burning powders such as 4350 and 4831... Still, 22" barrels are common and perform well..I doubt cutting it back to 20" would drop the velocity much more than 100 FPS or so, which would not make that much difference in performance.. I suspect that muzzle blast and muzzle flash might increase significantly though.. I hunted with a guy once who had a 30-06 with a 20" barrel, and it was LOUD and was quite a fire breather..
  14. If the one gun were to include big game and small game, the most versatile and effective chambering would be a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs for bigger game and shot loads for smaller game and birds... Nothing else comes CLOSE to the 12 gauge as far as versatility is concerned.... If you are considering a rifle chambering for all medium and big game...30-06....
  15. Sorry Phade...I don't have any of that stuff.. I have mostly 12 and 20 gauge shotshells..
  16. Phade... What length shells ? What would you like to receive in trade ?
  17. SWEEEEEEEET, Larry... I wouldn't have shot the other two either.. 44.0 of RL-15 is my load for the 120 Tsx also...Maybe when I shoot up my TSX's I'll do a box of 120 NBT's just for s**ts and giggles...I killed a lot of critters over the years with my .280 and 140 NBT's...
  18. The guy is not necessarily hunting where he lives... Maybe he's got a camp somewhere that the season opened Oct 1. Where the heck is Greece anyway ? Sounds like someplace where I wouldn't want to drop the soap..
  19. Since my Parkinson's developed, I've become partial to a pattern called " Quaking Bush"....

I'd lend you mine, but I've already named her...

Maybe so, and if you look long and hard on the internet, you can probably find a "mink lined testicle massager", if you get my point...hehehe.....

    Gotcha covered, partner...<<grin>>...
  23. Pygmy

    .410

True, but not with sub .40 caliber projectiles weighing less than 100 grains and with a MV of less than 2000 FPS... Also take into account that foster style shotgun slugs are not very aerodynamically efficient and shed velocity very fast, kind of like a badminton birdie..
  24. Must be that's a flying squirrel on your tailgate next to the cockbirds...<<grin>>....
