  1. I have heard the cucumber story, also, but I think it is an old wives tale... It seems that this tale was usually told by somebody's grandmother, rather than the people who had considerable experience and contact with rattlesnakes.. Back when the critters were unprotected there was a fair number of guys in my area who used to hunt them..Why, I don't know..I guess they just liked to catch them and play with them..These were the people who usually ended up being bitten.. I can only recall one instance of a snakebite involving a person who was just out minding his own business..Back in the 60s a boy in Cameron was walking near his home in high grass and was bitten on the ankle..His foot had to be amputated..All other cases of snakebite that I heard of were people who were handing them, either recreationally or trying to kill them..
  2. Good job, Pilgrim !! Glad to see you fared well.. Them BUFFLERS is GOOOD eatin'...
  3. What was that thing staring at the deer ?? The neighborhood OGRE ??
  4. You guys should be ashamed with all of that sexist talk.... Oh...Wait a minute....You said PUNT guns, didn't you....Never mind...Musta read it wrong..
  5. Another good man gone to hell...LOL.. J/K....Congrats Monkeyman....
  6. Some snakes are live bearers, Joe, and I believe rattlesnakes are among them... They still have a relatively low reproduction rate though, and I suspect that the young suffer a high mortality rate...Over the years I have seen hawks with snakes dangling from their talons numerous times, and we sure have plenty of hawks around..
  7. I have never seen a domestic turkey with that coloration...I think it is a red phase piebald...I have seen a couple over the years..I have also seen pictures of a blue phase piebald that is kind of a bluish-grey.....
  8. I was a little concerned because I got my turnip/radish/rape plot in a little late, around the third week of August and the weather was pretty dry the next two weeks.. Not to worry...With the rain and fairly warm weather we have had since then, everything grew great...I have turnips the size of baseballs, radishes 8-10 " long and the greens would be about 2 feet tall, except the deer are keeping them all trimmed down..My clover/ oat plot is right beside it and they are hammering it too..
  9. I suspect it is in the Cameron/Cameron Mills area a few miles south of Bath... That area has the highest density of timber rattlers in New York...
  10. Don't worry, Growie...They're all denned up now....Actually they hunt at night in warm weather and generally rest in cover during the day.. Most action around dens takes place in spring when they are emerging and fall when they are denning for the winter.. They don't use the den on a daily basis during summer when they are most active, it's more of a refuge from the cold, like woodchucks hibernating for the winter.
  11. You must admit, though....It seems like "behind the rump roast" would be an appropriate place to hide them..
  12. Gene Wensel wrote of this subject in one of his books... He said that the worst verbal abuse he ever suffered in his life was when his wife discovered a Ziploc bag full of them (used) hidden behind a rump roast in the family freezer..
  13. Keep your eye on the skyline and your nose in the wind...May you do well, Pilgrim...
  14. I did a study on my kill dates and learned that I have killed a LOT more deer on EST than on DST.. Especially since I quit hunting with that silly bow and arrow ! Maybe I should write an article for " Deer and Deer Hunting" on that subject.
  15. Sorry to hear this..It's always tough to lose a good friend..
  16. I'd go with the Hawken... " Kin you skin GRIZ, Pilgrim ? "
  17. You found an elk in Newfoundland ? He must have had webbed feet..<<grin>>..
  18. I agree with the above posters...I ain't risking getting my mangy old butt kicked by a damn deer !! Having said that, once when I was young, dumb and bulletproof, I crawled under a junked car with a bayonet to finish off a wounded porcupine.. True story..I'll let you all guess as to whether ALCOHOL was involved in that incident... I managed to escape without getting a face full of quills, but it was touch and go there for a couple of minutes..
  19. We all have our favorites, but ,truth be known, there are probably at least a dozen common rifle/bullet combinations that could be used for deer from up close to 300 yards or so, that would show little if any difference regarding ability to hit a deer sized target, OR performance on game given proper shot placement... If we were to include chamberings that are commomnly used in other parts of the world, there would be even more combinations that give similar performance...
