  1. I use the blue too....Say, that RHYMES ....
  2. Hehehehe...Sounds like one of those Rube Goldberg arrows....
  3. I haven't used a shotgun for deer since rifles became legal here in Steuben Co. I bought a fully rifled cantilever barrel for my 12 gauge 1100 years ago when there was not a very wide selection of sabot ammo available, so I have not tried many of the current sabot projectiles.. Of the ammo that I tried, the Win BRI 2 3/4" standard velocity gave by far the best accuracy .. I tried the Remington copper solids and they threw patterns rather than groups in my gun..The higher velocity Winchesters and the Federals gave mediocre accuracy, but the Standard BRI were the best.. They also performed well on game and were the lightest recoil of any slug load I have ever tried.. They were cheaper, too..I don't even know if they still make them...
  4. Do it as long as you can..I was still going strong at 44 .. I never saw much difference until I reached my early 50s...Between 50 and 60... BIG difference... Now I'm in my 60s and there are LOTS of things that I can't do anymore... I can still make it to the top of the mountain, but it TAKES a lot longer...<<sigh>>....
  5. At my advanced age, that regimen WOULD kill me...I have trouble enough getting my ragged old ass out of bed and on the river (about a 5 minute drive) by shooting time... You sure EARN your ducks !!
  6. Growie...Does this mean you have sexy toes ?....<<grin>>...
  7. Blacks are pretty common here, but I've never seen a gadwall in the fall, and only one widgeon and one pintail... I see widgeon, gadwall, and hooded mergies in the spring every year, but never during duck season... I agree on eating mallards and woodies...Probably my favorite game meat of all..Fall blacks are also excellent, at least the ones I shoot around here, comparable to mallards..Teal are excellent also, but you need a few to make a meal..Back when the season used to open earlier in October I used to get quite a few teal, but opening this late I seldom see any..
  8. Cool...You got a real mixed bag... I seldom see such variety in my area...Woodies, mallards, some blacks....And of course, MERGANSERS.....
  9. All we saw was mergansers...Fun shooting, but not much good to eat...My buddy cooks 'em up for his dogs..They love 'em...
  10. Deerpassion...You look like Russell Crowe !
  11. You are lucky I'm not smart enough to post pictures.. I'm so ugly that when I was born the doctor took one look at me and slapped my MOTHER...
  12. One issue with the .300 mags is the recoil...I worked up loads for my .338 Win mag and my buddy's .300 Win mag and they both kicked the snot out of me at the bench.. Certainly some shooters handle recoil better than others, but one reason that the calibers in the .270/.280./ 7mm rem mag/.308/30-06 class are so popular is that they have about as much recoil as many shooters are comfortable with.. The .300 mags all have reputations as hard kickers, and I think they have more recoil than Joe Average Deerhunter wants to deal with...My buddy uses his .300 Win Mag for deer, but then he's dumb as a stump and as recoil proof as a tractor tire..
  13. Don't feel bad, Kid... I suspect we ALL had problems with premature releases when we were younger....
  14. You mean like 3 spotted owls and a whooping crane...??.. Nope, never did ANYTHING like that...
  15. Very interesting thread..I must admit that being somewhat of a traditionalist ( read PREJUIDICED OLD FART), I sometimes overlook some of the often redundant newer fat, short cartridges, such as the short mags. Some do fill a niche perhaps as well or better than older chamberings, especially if you happen to be a short action fan. I readily admit lack of experience with these chamberings, but from what I have read, both the 270 WSM and the .300 WSM have been quite successful and useful chamberings, allowing .270 Win and .300 Win mag performance in accurate short action chamberings.
  16. You want a chambering that is as versatile as the 30-06, but in a short action and compatible with a 20 inch barrel ?? You just described the .308 Win...
  17. I'm retired...My vacation starts whenever I WANT it to....Hehehehehe....
  18. Glad to see you are coming to your senses, Jaeger....<<wink>>... The 88 or 99 levers NEED to be in .358... If you want something similar in a bolt action, there are LOTS of nice old commercial Mausers on the market in 9.3 x 57, with performance similar to a .358 OR a .338 Federal, and they're CHEAP !! The only reason I haven't bought one is because I need another rifle like I need another hole in my head, PLUS the fact I have a 9.3 x 62 that I could load down and get similar ballistics..
  19. My one and only muzzleloader is a TC Hawken .50 cal. which was a birthday present from my wife in the early 1970's... The woman flew the coop several years ago......Still got the rifle, and it still works great...
  20. Nice buck, Wooly....Good to see your PURTY face back on the forum...
  21. Fletch...Glad to learn that I am not the ONLY one who goes "bare bones"....
  22. Due to the favorable reports from my friends on this forum, I've decided to "pull the trigger" on a Primos Trigger Stick bipod...I just happen to have enough points on my Cabela's Club account to buy one...Thanks, all...
  23. I heard that he's shacked up in a cave with a female sasquatch and that soon he would be displaying a lot of pictures documenting intra-species relationships ( also known as animal husbandry)....
