  1. I don't have any REALLY light centerfire rifles... I carry the same Rem M700 Mountain Rifle in 7mm08 that I use for most of my whitetail hunting..It has a Burris 2x7x33 on it. All my milsurps are as issue, so they tend to be on the heavy side. I'll bet that chopped down Jap would kick, especially if it still has the steel buttplate.
  2. What's the pup's name, Paula ? My three were named Dawg, Doc, and Pete, in that order...
  3. Nice rifles, Sailing ! I especially like the Glenfield, being a fan of wood stocks, half magazines and peep sights...
  4. The pup is a beauty, Paula..!! I have a soft spot for springers...I had three over the years, all liver and white males..Great dogs...
  5. Graf & Sons lists 5 different brands of .38 S&W from about $20 /50 to about $40/50... I didn't check Midway, but I'm betting they offer several brands also..
  6. According to info I have read online, .38 Colt New Police and .38 S&W are interchangeable...I also read that it is not a good idea to cut down .38 Special cases because the diameter is smaller... No personal experience, just what I have read. .38 S&W may be easier to find than .38 NP, because there were a LOT of revolvers chambered for .38 S&W in the early to mid 1900s... Good luck, G-man...
  7. Nice...For some of you...Nosebleed country for me... No way would you get MY old fat ass on that platform !!
  8. On my last Alaska caribou hunt in 2001, one of my partners used a 6.5 x 55...He killed two caribou with it, no problem...One was about 300 yards, the other about 200...
  9. No problem as long as gun season is open.. You just can't carry a firearm of any kind while bowhunting during the special bow season..
  10. I usually carry my M1 Garand several days during NY season..I can't use it in PA because semi autos aren't allowed there . I shot a doe with it several years ago in NY , the only shot opportunity I have had while carrying it. It has issue peep sights. It ( the receiver) is 1943 vintage ( WWII), and I really enjoy carrying it, as a piece of history. I carried my K98k German Mauser (8MM) in PA a couple of times, but never had a shot with it.. I have a 1944 Long Branch SMLE .303 that is a very good shooter, and I have thought about taking it deer hunting, but it is currently on display at the local American Legion post.
  11. I returned my friend's rifle to him a week ago with all of his cases loaded... He shot it last weekend and is very pleased with the results..It's shooting sub MOA out to 400 yards, which is his outside range limit.. Sighted three inches high at 100 yards, the rifle is back on zero at 260 yards and 14 inches low at 400.. Hopefully in a month or so I'll be able to post a picture of a big mule deer buck that he shoots with it.
  12. Next you'll have to send us a picture of one of those double breasted, split tailed mattress thrashers..
  13. Osprey, beyond a shadow of a doubt.. I see them on a daily basis here in the Canisteo Valley.. Just the other day I saw one carrying a pretty big fish, perhaps 2 or 3 pounds.. He had it turned head on( fish pointing the same way he was flying) to reduce air resistance..
  14. As a teenager, I'm walking down the ice on a frozen creek with my M 69 Winchester .22.. the ice is lick and both feet go out from under me..The rifle goes into the air, does a couple of cartwheels and lands on the ice with a sickening CRACK !.. Broke off the front sight and cracked the stock...Got both repaired by a local gunsmith, but the rifle always bore the scars.. This is a REALLY dumb one....I am standing a quarterdeck mid watch on a Navy Destroyer.. The lazy ass CPO who is in charge of the watch is down in the chief's quarters watching TV and drinking coffee, leaving me alone... I'm bored stiff..I'm wearing a holstered, unloaded 1911 .45 with two loaded clips in a belt carrier... I wonder...." How long would it take me to get this pistol into action if I ever needed it ?" SO , standing alone on the quarterdeck in the middle of the night, I do a little "quickdraw" exercise.... I draw the pistol, pull a mag, load it in the pistol and rack the slide....Pretty dang quick, too, if I remember correctly.. Ok....Here I stand, locked and loaded, safety off....Time to unload the pistol.... I hold back the hammer and press the trigger to drop the hammer, something I had done many times with many different guns.. But this time the hammer SLIPS off my thumb... I swear to God it made the loudest CLICK I have ever heard in my life... Sweat pouring off my brow, I dropped the mag and ejected the round..The primer was dented, but not QUITE enough to ignite the primer... If that thing had gone off they would probably STILL have me in the brig, and that was in 1972..
  15. I have a fixed 4X Leupold that I would let go for $1000 or so...
  16. Hehehehe...Good thing those boys were using a LER scope !!
  17. What hate..?? You're the only one mentioning hate... I just think everyone should go out and hunt and have a good time, without worrying so much about what the OTHER guy might be doing.. If you feel somebody hates you because you're a bowhunter, perhaps that's an issue you should discuss with your shrink, while you are addressing your superiority complex.
  18. I'm glad that you don't mind being labeled "elitist", because that is one the most elitist posts I have ever read... You common " read non-bowhunting" shmucks HATE us because we're so GOOD....
  19. Ummm...Yeah...Whatever your point is... I wasn't trying to make a point, only sharing a personal observation.. I'm an old fart and I know a lot of bowhunters, the great majority of whom are also gun hunters, and can't remember the last time that any one of them shot a doe with their bow..Many of them, however, shoot smaller bucks with their bows and then make excuses as to why they shot one that small. Of course, many gun only hunters do the same thing...It seems they feel they have to apologize or make excuses for shooting a buck that measures under 130 or so.. One of the most popular excuses is " If I hadn't shot it, the damn Amish next door would have"...
  20. Mostly 8X and 8T...I really believe that it is mostly because they would rather say " I shot a six point , but he wasn't bad for a BOW buck" than say they shot a doe.. They figure they can use their DMPs or MZ tags for meat deer... I am just speculating on their motives...
  21. I don't want to offend anybody, and since I no longer bowhunt, I don't have a dog in this fight, but just as an observation, I can't think of a single one of my bowhunting friends who shoots does with his bow. These same guys don't seem to have any problem shooting does for meat during gun season or late MZ season... As I said...Not to draw fire, only an observation..
  22. Sorry, but I don't fit into any of your categories... I shoot deer with rifles and muzzleloaders..Since rifles have been legalized in my unit, I use shotguns for birds and small game only.. I shoot does with rifles or muzzleloaders. I shoot only adult ( 1.5 years or older) deer of either sex..I don't shoot fawns because I don't think they have as much flavor as adult deer and you don't get much meat from them..
  23. I should have just about enough to get me through to gun season...The Mermaid and I only eat about two deer a year now since we have become elderly...
  24. I don't know if all shellholders are interchangeable, but I have RCBS, Lyman and LEE, and they are all the same... As far as single stage presses go, the RCBS Rockchucker is the one that others are compared to....
