  1. Oh YEAH !! I always have a few cans in the pantry...I Like King Oscar double layered in olive oil, but there are many good ones.. My Filipino daughter in law gets me some at the Oriental store in tomato sauce with hot chiles for a buck a can and they are darn good !! There is nostalgia involved also...Reminds of the job I used to have cleaning the girl's locker room at the local health club...
  2. You're doing great with the ringtails, Bob !! Hope you get some canines to work on soon..Foxes are easy..Not much fat and you can peel them most of the way with little cutting... Coyotes are a BEE -och…… Skin seems like it is glued to the flesh and you have to cut every inch of the way...
  3. Man after my own heart....For you Pilgrims out there...Do not follow these proportions unless you want your burger and sausage to taste good...
  4. That's my favorite ex girlfriend.. Connie Lingus...….
  5. Hey...If they were abundant, legal and tasted like king crab legs, I might consider harpooning one, as long as I had a dozen Cubans to retrieve, butcher and process it for me !!
  6. I have never had a lot of luck with hard, noisy rattling....However I have called in quite a few with light "tickiling" of the horns... Also, I think all kinds of calling are more effective in early season..Early season is the time to be doing it..When they start chasing heavy, they do not respond as well...
  7. Kind of like a muskox hunt....The only hard parts are GETTING THERE.....putting up with the SUB ZERO WEATHER....and paying many THOUSANDS of dollars to do it..Not to mention spending a few nights in an igloo with Inuits who haven't had a bath in six months...Basically you just drive your snow machine or dogsled up to the critters and shoot them when they form a defensive circle.....I have read that they are VERY tasty, however....
  8. Reminds me of story....Some of you oldtimers on here might remember it, because I think I told it before, but it has been a few years.. An old woodsman in Northern Oregon was arrested for shooting a spotted owl... The arresting officer asked him why he shot it.. He replied " Because I was hungry, and it was in the middle of the winter and I had no meat..I ate it" THe officer considered the fact that the old man was living a subsitence lifestyle, and decided to let him off with just a warning.. Before he left, the officer asked the old guy " What does spotted owl taste like ??" The old guy replied.... " I would rate it somewhere between bald eagle and whooping crane..."......
  9. So you're a conniessuer...Good for you... I'm just an old country boy from Dogpatch....Walmart doesn't bother me...Burger is burger...
  10. I add some fatty beef ( usually 70% lean burger from Wallyworld)….3 or 4 parts venison to one part beef... Makes a good burger and works great for meatballs, meatloaf, etc. etc.
  11. I can't imagine anyone sitting in a tree hunting those silly deer when he could be shooting ducks...<<grin>>….
  12. # 2 Duke coil springs , Bob...Offset jaws....The traps aren't mine..They are on loan from a buddy who is not trapping this year, because he's too busy chasing pheasants, ducks and deer...I don't know what he set the tension at, but they feel pretty stiff to me.. I put out one more trap today..That is 6 cat specific sets I have...Tomorrow is another day...
  13. Good job, Miz….However, you're wasting your time..Ain't no deer in Greenwood... I know because I lived in Whitesville for a couple of years....No deer there either, or turkeys...You might better go someplace like Long island...I hear there are lots of deer down there...
  14. I'm very low tech, using a standard strap ( there is probably a better system) however, binoculars IMHO are an absolutely INDISPENSIBLE tool for still hunting...I don't still hunt much any more, since I no longer can execute quick off hand shots, but back in the day, I'd almost rather leave my GUN home than my binoculars when still hunting....Look a LOT and move a little...Of course, my still hunting was generally done in specific areas here in the southern tier where it was not necessary to cover a lot of ground to find deer..
  15. I sat on a Navy destroyer pier at Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1971 many evenings, singing Beatles songs with my buddies and throwing empty Boone's Farm bottles ( @ 99 cents per bottle) into the East River while we watched the used condoms float past in the current....We called them "white eels" or" Cony Island Trout"... Pretty romantic, eh ??…. I missed the day Tacks was born, however...( Sept. 4, 1971) because I was home on liberty getting married that day....I suspect I got lucky that night, but I honestly can't remember...<<sigh>>….
  16. Reminds me of " The Ballad of Handjob"... Recited to the tune of " The Ballad of Ringo" by Lorne Greene in the late 1960's... I'll recite that to Treeguy and Robhuntnfish the next time we go walleye fishing...
  17. If you get some young of the year coon, Bob, they are very good eating....Just be sure to get all the fat off them that you can..They are closely related to bear, and I know you're a bear fan... To my taste, they are close to rabbit, in flavor and texture..
  18. I'm trying guide sticks and dirt clumps, but I am a rank amateur and don't really have it down yet...I'll keep moving stuff around..Have had animals in at a couple of sets so far and still have not fired a trap..
  19. I'm glad you started this thread, Bob....I was going to PM you to see how you were doing...Congrats on the ringtails... I only have 5 sets out at the present and they are all bobcat specific, not that I might not catch something else.. Hoping to get a few canine sets out soon, but the cats are still going to be my main focus.......
  20. Old Paul Mauser would be proud of you, Dave...<<grin>>…..
  21. AND lots of thread...CONGRATS , Greg !!….
  22. I came SOOO close this morning....I had a cat track ON my trap, but just off the pan.... I need to learn how to block the traps better to control where they step.. The good news is that the cat got a free meal ( duck leg) and did not have an unpleasant experience, so hopefully he'll be back and I'll get another chance at him... It rained pretty hard last night, so I re-scented all of my sets..So far no freezing temps to deal with... I need to go shoot a couple more mergansers for bait...
  23. I put 3 more sets in this morning... Boy does that bobcat pee ever STINK !! I've got 2 cubbies and 3 dirtholes, baited with merganser meat and bobcat gland lure, plus some bobcat urine sprinkled around for good measure..
