  1. This year is the firs time I ever had to buy firewood, I went threw 11 coards. I have burnable trees but just cannot get to them. The problem is going up hill with over 2 feet of snow on the ground and frozen soil and ice underneath.( Just bought some last week ) . Even one of the local suppliers will not go into the woods around here with his skidder. Just keeping the flame down low and using the regular heating system in the house also.
  2. Minus 23 degrees around here yesterday morning, Truck started so we did some food shopping , snow on the flats around the house is over 2' deep so been down stairs tying streamers and flys for the spring and doing some reloading.
  3. For the person that said the snow does not last on Long Island I say BS , I was born, and lived and worked on Long Island for 60+ Years, My dad would not have invested in a second dump truck with a snow plow when I was old enough to drive if there was not enough lasting snow to plow.Later on when I moved from Nassau county to Suffolk county there were days when I could not get to work for 2 to 3 days because of the snow. I have driven after a snow storm out east and If I did not have chains on my PU I would not have gotten to the spots I wanted to hunt. I now live Up State only because I am use to the snow , sure it was not Minus 23 degrees on Long Island as it was here last night But the Snow Does Last.
  4. Sorry to hear that, I lost my 13 year old begal two days before this last Christmass, the same way went to sleep and not even a wimper. from him at the side of the bed and his Sister 12 years old the same way 2 years ago. I know what you are going threw Just hang in there.
  5. X2 on Pre Cooling , We used Igloo 120 / 150 Quart. on our beach Buggies for a weekend or more in the summer on our cooler racks on the front of the trucks on the beaches with no problems.
  6. I have a Ruger 77 in 22mag. all shots inside of a dime at 100 yards. Furbearers Yote. size and smaller are dead meat.
  7. Well guess what they are predicting snow by us for the next week ( that's how far the forecast goes)
  8. Finally see some tracks in the snow leading to a path I am making threw the snow with my compact tractor to get to some fire wood. There leading to a spot where I have a cam. set up. We will see how many there were. Two years ago we had a few new born and there mothers eating every day behind the house , One did have bumps on it's head and would try to chase any other deer that would come to feed.
  9. What about seniors ?. Do you mean they should have the same rights as a Youth hunter ?. I do not understand your comment. And I am pretty sure I am your senior. And chose the deer I would like to shoot at and harvest.I am all for the buck per year per hunter and the 3 point per side or better.
  10. He said a Tank not a Pond. .
  11. Yep they were looking good 2 weeks ago , nice and hefty. Even the new borns of this year. The snow is in 4' piles on each side of the roads where the plows pile it up, no sighns of them crossing over them near me.
  12. Have not seen 1 in two weeks, they must be under the pines across the road from me, when the wind blows from that direction my lab stands in one spot with his nose up in the air.
  13. Gee that looks like the sides of my driveway and around the back of the house. .
  14. And it all might have to be done again after Sunday, so rest up over the weekend.
  15. As grow. said I been there also had everything wash away. Wait till after the snow melt and heavy rains. and wait for the last frost. I have lost many $$ in seed and fert. by rushing it. The dairy farmers by me are spreading manure ( but they have to get out of the barns ) also.( the ones with big 4wheel drive tractors ) And others are just stock pileing it untill they can spread it. So do not go by what they are doing.
  16. Well folks welcome to the new word and there way of doing business. The problem they would rather replace a complete scope then Repair it. If they ( whoever ) do not have one in stock ( same as you sent in ) You are screwed. Reason is 1 they do not have the staff to repair them anymore . It is cheaper for them to make a new one ( with today's machinery ) then to pay some one to sit there and repair the product. It is more $$ in there pocket and that what they are in business for not to make friends. Not saying all of the companies are like this but as the old timers that did the work retired or died they were not replaced.
  17. SOB hope you are not on the way back up, if so you better pick up some pellets on the way up , It's going to be Cold up here for the neat week and most places are out of them.
  18. Like this, I just filled up my outside wood boiler with Seasoned Cherry wood, Grilled a NY strip stake on my BBQ and I am sipping a glass of NYS wine , Hell why no it's my birthday And second the Kiss My ARSE EPA.
  19. Started about an hour ago here, same forecast threw Monday night. Went out this morning with the JD with the bucket and made more room to plow the next load.
  20. I made a curved blade skinner 50+ years ago out of tool steel. I find skinning a deer a lot easier with a curved blade , you are using the whole blade in one movement not just the tip.
  21. Bill I had a 742 in 30 - 06 for many years and deer. Just proper cleaning and no problems.I had another one years later that must have been made on a Friday or Monday. If you remember what they said about cars made on them days. It should have been a factory reject. Just would not shoot where you aimed it.
  22. Bill, I cannot see your reasoning for wanting a light rifle, the single shot I can see. You and I are the same age and I do have a breathing problem also, I get out of breath in walking short distances. I just went the other way and bought a 7+ pound rifle because as mentioned above less recoil. And I am not going to be walking around all day threw the woods. I looked at it 2 ways. At our age should I just buy a cheap shooter, any will kill a deer with the right shot placement or buy a quality made rifle that I will enjoy for the amount of time I have left.Well I went the way of a quality made and proven to be an accurate rifle.not a single shot but something I was looking for.and happend to be at the right place at the right time and got it for almost 1/2 of it's selling price. One rifle that was not mentioned and I have had a few different calibers threw the years ( shame the do not offer it in .308 ) but they do offer it in 7mm-08 is the Ruger #1 . Another well proven simple design. but also not cheap.
  23. When we would have family gatherings when I was young mom's and pop's were not small ( both grand mothers had 8 children each) they lived 15 - 20 minutes apart by car. They would talk about years gone by when they would walk the railroad tracks and pick up coal that fell off of the the trains and bring it home to heat the house or put in the cook stove. Back then the steam engines were run on coal.
  24. When I was growing up we had an old cast iron coal furnace in the basement of the house with a water jacket in it for hot water. In one corner of the basement was a room 10' x 10' , there was a window that the delivery truck would pit a chute into and dump the coal into the basement. My parents would buy 2 loads of coal a year that filled that room. We would fill that furnace 1 time a day . It was later converted to burn fuel oil.Now this was in an uninsulated 2 story house. Coal gives off the most amount of heat for it's size. I know of people going threw 2 to 4 tons of wood pellets a year. Plus they should be properly cleaned at least once a week. According to them. There was a 911 call this morning for a pellet stove on fire, so the cleaning part must be true..
