  1. Nice find looks ready to put a finish on and mount.
  2. For the many of us that have started with a long and or a recurve bow and threw the years updated to a compound bow and then a crossbow what would be the bow that you would chose for a nice clear day taking a slow walk threw the woods on some decent cleared trails, during the legal archery season and you are in good health. No treestand or ground blind hunting. And not take into account the means of careying extra arrows. Here is what I have found since I now have at least on of each. the Long bow and the Recurve bow are the lightest of them all, they take a little more pre season practice but they get the job done ( if you miss it is your error ) The compound is a little more forgiving and you can hold a full draw a little longer , they are a little heavier but can be a lot shorter, they take less practice time as long as your pins, or other sights have not moved. The Crossbow is heavier then the Long and Recurve and can be about the same as a Compound.,It is very accurate as long as the scope has not moved.but to me seems akward to carry, I would have to use a sling for it.
  3. It is still winter by me snow everywhere,it's down to 6"-8" deep, with very few bare spots except where I plowed as the driveway and around the house. , the bad part is that it is very wet with ice under it. It took me 2 hours to make a 100 foot path with the 4 wheel drive JD with the bucket on the front , a full weight box on the back and chains on all four wheels. That was going up hill at about a 15 degree angle, only another 500 feet to get to the fire wood I have up there. So the stories about the snow keeping the ground from freezing is not true, since the average temp. around me in Feb. was 9 degrees. We will see if the warm weather we might get today does some more melting.
  4. I have one year up on you and my body went down hill ,Way down in the past year, in fact I only bow hunted 1 day last season. I lost the use of my right hand and wrist for 16 weeks. Then it moved to my left hand to sholder for 2 weeks. I now have what feels like a torn rotator cuff in the left side.I am not and never have been a couch potato type person, always on the move doing something. I bought one the middle of last years bow season but only sighted it in , but was very pleased with the results at 30 yards. As some people say once you reach 70 it is all down hill from there.
  5. Since we do not have NG on this side of the hill , we have 3 choices Elec. Bottles gas or wood.In my single wide I had bottled gas for heat, cooking and hot water, The cost was too much compared to the the elec. which I now have in my new house,we were getting ripped off by the suppliers of the bottled gas.The only advantage of the bottled gas is that you could cook and have some heat from the stove when the power went out. Heat that came with the house is forced hot air ( Kero ) fuel. It is quick to heat up but does not last that long.It seems to cool down fast. I did have radiant heat installed in the house both floors ( nice consistant heat ) hooked up to a wood boiler outside, It is also hooked up to my Hot Water Heater , which is a normal Elec. hot water heater with another heating coil hooked up to it ( nice instant heat) and no elec. being used.A neighbor has a wood burning stove with a water jacket and they are happy with it. If you have a good supply of wood that might be a way to go.
  6. Look up how many centuries cross bows were used, way before Compounds.I am Old die hard conventional bow hunter 60 + years at it, Due to my age and injuries I have bought a Cross Bow.Have not hunted with it again because of injuries , But when I first received it and sighted it in it was way inside of a pie plate at 30 yards , more like inside of a baseball the first 5 shots,a lot better then most other types of bows.for the first few shots. WE have Archery,Rifle( .22 caliber to the biggest magnums),Shotgun, MZ loader and X Bow seasons. You can get confused as what to use when, why not make it just a hunting season and ( as in money drag racing ) Run what You Brung . Use what ever you want for the game you are after. But the DEC will not do thjat because they will loose too much $$$$$.
  7. Why expand the X boy season, they can be used during the Early Bear season ( Archery season), Regular Firearms season, and the Late MZ season.
  8. Why sell the 30-06 you can buy ammo from 110 grain to 220 grain for it . my old BDL I used for woodchucks to black bear. and dropped them all. I did recently buy a Sako in .243 and another Sako in 30 - 06 , should have everything covered.
  9. And the one that the fireing pin broke was a Remy. 700 BDL in 30-06 with over 1000 rounds threw it. 1960's vintage.
  10. Go for it and get it. And I always have a backup with me I Had a fireing pin brake once ( there went that weekend ) and another time another rifle something else failed .If you can afford it Yes.
  11. They are out in the fields by me where manure is spread also deer out in the fields where the grass is showing. There were many of both yesterday.
  12. This was one of the largest and oldest companies in our area why should they BS on the local public radio station about that. As I mentioned to SOB on another website the average temp. in our area was 9 degrees for the month of Feb.Many of them nights below 0 degrees as 10 to 20 below..
  13. I guess the western part of the state did not get the depth that the ground froze as we did some of the big syrup producers here are saying the ground froze down as far as 7 feet and it efected the root systems in there trees which have been producing poor this year so far.
  14. Have many trees but the snow was a problem getting to them ( it's all up hill ) Do mine on a 55 gal. drum upright with a grate on top and a big old oversized turkey pan and also finish in the house.Just make enough for myself and friends. Sap was not running that good but should pick up this week.
  15. What are you going to do when your 20 years older ?. It does not get any easier .

    Trout season

Took Rt. 28 to down state during the week the Eusopus in Pheonica was very low and brown water.
  17. The end of this month and the next month are the best time to look for property in the Catskills, It is when we get the Spring thaw and you will see where the land is wet and or under water. When we were looking for property an uncle that lived up here would come with us after we found a piece of property and steered us away from 5 plots that we thought were great. Water, a lot of locals up here buy bottled water. Elec. , does the trailer have a generator ?. and how far to the nearest power source .A 30' camper must have some sort of forced hot air heating system. Heat a 100 pound prophane tank could be your best friend for heating and cooking during hunting season.
  18. Could have been Spiders or Earwigs they both love to get inside of things also had some in one of my cams and the little box on the tel. pole that the tel. wire connections. I have to clean that one out every few months. I also have to pull one cam from where it has been for some time and check it out.And get it ready for the winter weather coming back this weekend.
  19. If you intend on living on the property that you intend on buying ( it depends on ) How much income you have when you retire. Can you afford to have someone plow you out almost every day as with the weather we had this year or can you afford a plow truck or what ever to move snow ?. House ( closer to a plowed road the better) Also a good generator and fuel supply if the power goes out. To supply and run the house and heating and refrig. systems. Many things to plan on. Add every thing up first and see if it is worth it.
  20. Caliber Specific Riflescope .223 by Cabela's 3-12 matt finish 40 mm obj. $149.99 in the latest Cabela's catalog.
  21. Stainless vs blued barrel thread got me thinking. The 2 top ones in the picture that I posted in that thread are Custom rifles, The top one is a Remington short action, fully blueprinted, Sako extractor and a Rifle Basics trigger, BBL .is a Hart 6mm ( now chambered for .243 AI.) It was another 6mm caliber before re chambering,And is pillar glass bedded. The Middle ( Left Handed ) is a Montana custom action and BBL.in .358 Win. with a custom laminated wood stock. My favorite and not in the picture is a 6.5 x 55 Swed. Sportarized with an aftermarket BBL. 24" long,Custom wood stock with the action glass bedded and high gloss blued. Shoots sub MOA at 100 yards with 140 grain hand loads. I do shoot left handed because of screwed up eyes, But I find it easier to re load a right handed rifle.
  22. Here you go, Top glass beaded, black hot blue, H&S Syn. stock. Middle gloss blued wood gloss stock, Bottom Stainless Steel glass beaded from the factory and factory Syn. Sako stock.
  23. 1 Moultrie out near the house regular AA batteries , pull the card every 3 days , still going strong even at 23 below 0 , nothing but 1 bunney and some birds hitting the hay and stray I have in a shed nearby.
  24. Remember them all, My dad had a crank start car And how many here remember the end of World War II ?, Do. I
