Was out working in the woods most of the afternoon , nice gentile wind from the south even though it 80 it did not feel that bad. No more then50 yards away on the side of the hill Mom , her 2 young does and son from last year , were bedded down . I decided to hop on the ATV and head in the direction where the were , the got up and walked over to a watering hole , small , around 6' x 8' X 1 -1/2 ' deep , walked into it and stayed there around 5 minutes and headed back to where the were bedded , brousing along the way . they are eating everything they can get at , but still thin for this time of the year. If you would see these young ones you would never think that they are almost a year old.

Neighbor down the road grows them for his livestock and also sets up his bee hives in the patch. I just grow a few for decorations and the deer do stomp them pretty good once it starts to get cold.

National Park Catches Mountain Lion Jumping High Fence
thphm replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in Hunting Related Pictures
My father would win beer money making bets with our dalmation that could clear 6. fence no problem. I would watch Deer clear a 10' high fence at the old Grumman complex in Calvrtion. on L.I. I also have a little deer born, last year that jumps my 4" fence every evening to get at the clover coming up inside of it.. -
They do not look too healthy by me , yearlings are very thin compaired to last October and November. There Moms are looking a little better , but not as good in years past.
-
From looking at the shape the deer by me in the Catskills They were nice and heavy. This past winter took it's toll on them , to look at last years young they are very thin and I wonder how they survived. There mothers are a little heavier but still Thin Now. No I have not seen any yet. We will see in another month if the are going to have twins or triplets this year.

Look's like our back tags may be a thing of the past?
thphm replied to maytom's topic in General Chit Chat
Wait till you get the Free Lic. and you still have to apply for Archery and a Doe permit. What do They Do , The send you a Duplicate of what you already have + the Archery and Doe permit. Now you have 2 copies of everything except the archery and doe. -

I have no problen wearing one ,I have been doing it for 50+ years. If they stop printing them ,They should go back to the single lic. that they put the stamps on and you sighned across them, Instead of the mile long of seperate cards for each type of hunting you applied for. They are one big PIA. -
HaaHaa Got to laugh , I have the JD tractor parked up 100 ' from the house was using it most of the day, And a big Tom turkey just walked right in front of it going up hill.

Boy , we went from ATV's to UTV's,Tractors Bikes and now Snowmobiles. I can say that every land owner and the weekenders have at least one of each by me.At or around May 30'th the woods and roads are buzzing with the sound of 2 and four stroke engines. Guess what the animals get use to the sounds they make and know when to come out and feed and when to hide. Good example Opening day of rifle season, drove right up to my ground blind and parked the ATV right out side of it. Within 15 minutes I had 3 doe feeding 15 feet away from the blind and the smell of the warm ATV engine did not spook them at all, thy just took there time feeding and walked off with out a worry. It might be different in the deep woods where they are not common but not here were one of the above are used every day.

One Wild Fire was started by a local land owner burning stuff ( there has been a Red Flag Warning ) here for the past week. I guess some people just do not listen or obey the warnings..

How About an Official 2015 Gardening Thread?y
thphm replied to wildcat junkie's topic in General Chit Chat
Onions, beets, radish, kale and leeks are in the ground and growing great with this heat. Everything else is in flower pots on the window sills and not going in the ground until after the first of next month.( that is after the last frost ) by us. -
Well I guess at 74 years old with a bad hart and shortness of breath it fits me right into being a Lazy NY Hunter. I use mine (only hunt my property ) to get to and from my stands. Hauling myself and my gear and if I am lucky bring something back with me. I belonged to a hunting club and that is all the fellow hunters did on the club property. The local Kids with there dirt bikes and 3 wheelers were the ones making all the nois and commotion.

Get one with the amount of power you are going to use it for as My 500 cc with an auto trans has had enough for my uses and was suggested by the salesperson . Handling , there not a Moto Cross item. Be careful you can Flip them. Mine is fast enough for me, not in any hurry at 74.It fits in the back of my 6-1/2 ' bed no problem. Wit the IPT tires I use it all year long. Excepi in the 2' + snow with ice under it this past winter. All I have is Hills by me , go up and down them every day with my 100 pound Lab. sitting on the back, you have ti know your limits. Price wise If I were to do it over I would get a UTV. ( they came a long way in the last 10 years ) . I also pull a trailer almost every day filled with firewood or stone for walls , can be 1000 pounds at times..

I had a female turkey decoy kicked off of it's stake a few years ago but it was not by a turkey , it was by a spike buck . Decoy was set up in a small clearing and I was behind a big downed tree calling. The deer circled the decoy a few times , then kicked it off of the stake with it;s hind leg. I guess he did not want anything in his area. Did not hurt the decoy it was one of the blow up type. Congrats on the Tom.

Made my decision, 2014 Yamaha Viking
thphm replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in ATV's , UTV's, Dirtbikes & Snowmobiles
Just make sure that snow is packed down good when ramping it,I had to get my truck to pull mine off of a 4' high ramp and hit a soft spot and sunk in. 10 years with the same cable on the warn winch.( that is what the rollers are for ) just make sure they are free to move. -
As a person that lives nearby that takes his dogs down the road for a walk and stands there and watches them as they chase an animal threw a field or the woods. And ( not on his property )

How to wax a bow string by 60X Custom Strings
thphm replied to 60X Custom Strings's topic in Bow Hunting
Just spread it on the string and wok it in with your fingers until it gets soft and spreads easy. Same string for 40 years no problems. I use mineral oil ( buy it in a drug store ) on all of the other moving parts , one pint will last forever. -
Herman Survivors ( the original ) here , ( they must be 40 years old ) Warm them up with a hair dryer and spread mink oil or snow proof on them, let it dry and buff the excess off , good for the whole hunting season and more. When it gets below 0 degrees the old Soral Pack boots ( 50 + years old ) same treatment on the tops. Take an extra pare of liners and sox and you are good for the day.

If money is more important then your health , so let it be.

I have no idea of what size food plot you are talking about but why can't you just turn what is there over ( the farmers did this for centuries ) before these spray thing came out that now have a lot of questions about how safe they are for us and what we eat.
-
I think any footwear you intend on buying now days , you should go to a store and try them on , it seems as if they are not true to size any more.I cannot stand my Muck boots and wear them only as a last resort , they slip on ok but are a pain in the but to get off even with putting foot powder over the sox. I do not see a need for full rubber boots any way un less you are cleaning out a barn or walking threw a stream.

I have been hearing them on and off for the last week, heard some again yesterday morning while putting onion sets in the garden .
