  1. In my opinion it's a complete waste of time to fuss with deer ribs like you would with ribs from other animals. Cut out the little meat there is and grind it up. That's all it's really good for.
  2. Some of you guys kill me! I thought you guys plant food plots for the animals to eat?? Its almost too funny to watch you get bummed when they eat it all before you want them to eat it. Maybe you should put out signs next to the plots saying. "For deer only". "Food for hungry deer only after October 15th". "Raccoons, porcupines, please go eat elsewhere". "Trespassing animals will be prosecuted". LOL. Your first step of course is to teach the animals to read. LOL
  3. Oh, I believe you. I have seen lots of people have the very same experience. That is why when I decide to spend a week in the country with my family, I rent a house. Costs me nothing compared to owning something year round with NO headaches. Everything is set up and taken care of and I can relax more than if I owned it.
  4. Since the Yankees didn't get to the world series, it is a losing season for them. A-Rod most especially is pathetic in the post season. They used to call Reggie Mr. October. They should call A-Rod Mr. March. Spring training is about the only time he comes thru when they really need him to.
  5. Well, the funny part is that snake oil salesmen are pretty much a thing of the past, except in the hunting world that is. I don't know of any other pastime where so many potions are sold. Be it a doe or buck in heat potion. Deer urine. Sprays to cover yourself with. Vitamins for hunters. There seems to be an elixir for just about everything in hunting and the manufacturers of these products are laughing all the way to the bank! LOL
  6. I washed my clothes at the end of last year and hung it in the closet. I will be taking it off the hanger and be marching into the woods without doing anything else to it. I then hang my jacket in the garage for the rest of the season and wash it when the season is over. It hangs there absorbing the car exhaust and all.LOL Last few years I've still had deer come closer and closer to me. Could have practically clonked a few over the head actually, so to me at least all this spraying and stuff they sell is way overhyped and unnecessary.
  7. I agree, plus I highly doubt that it's the city people who are being blamed for the burglaries who are also doing the brunt of the poaching. Yeah, there might be a few, but in general it's the locals who are around most of the time and know the comings and goings of landowners around the area. Those that are in the area most of the time generally have the most opportunities to do it.
  8. There are some $5000 or more deer hunts where all the guide does is drive you to your deer stand and then picks you up for lunch or at the end of the day and then maybe helps you throw the deer into the truck if you get one. I would think giving the guide a 10% tip ($500) in a case like that is way more than generous in comparison to one who climbed sheep mountains with you or packed an elk out on his back for you. To me it all depends on how much the guide actually worked on the hunt. Believe me, guides get tipped way less than 10% by most hunters. They could only wish that everyone gave them a $500 tip. A lot of guys who go on hunts have to save long and hard for their trips, most especially these days and how expensive some of these hunts can be. Not many have the extra $500 to $1000 to throw at the guide as a tip.
  9. Biz-R-O, you're killin me, man! Tons?? Now if you were to tell me that there are TONS of Italians or Greeks who enjoy hunting, I wouldn't argue with you, but NO way that there are Jews hunting in the numbers you are claiming. Maybe you're mistaking some Italians for Jews? LOL I don't care if they are orthodox jews, liberal jews, or Jews for Jesus, hunting is not something they as a group give a crap about. Not to say that there couldn't possibly be a jew out there somewhere who hunts, but I will guarantee you that there aren't TONS of them out there like you are claiming.
  10. My goodness!! Where on earth do you live with all this nonsense going on around you?? Somalia? Poachers, burglars, jacklighters, you name it, it seems. Honestly starting to sound like something out of the movie "Deliverance". Must be a few toothless, banjo playing hillbillies around your parts wrecking such havoc! LOL
  11. Yup, it's sort of like a game. Most of these pro bidders are real estates and other people who regularly buy property cheap and then want to make some good money on it soon after by reselling it at a much higher cost. They are probably way better at it than we are since most of us don't have as much experience at this game like they do. Some people do luck out and get property for a song, but there probably aren't too many regular joe's like us that it happens to.
  12. They will get even sicker when NO one offers them anything even close to what they are asking!! LOL Very FEW people these days have extra spending money to buy any vacation property, nevermind paying these people the outrageous money they are asking. If they really want to sell they will have to suck it up and sell it for anything they can get, otherwise they will be owning it and paying taxes on it for a good long while to come!
  13. Probably the best point in this thread. Many people go up to their vacation houses and find out that there are big lawns to mow, leaves to clean up, maintenance to do on the house, etc, etc. They think they will be going up for relaxation and then find out its just a lot more work waiting for them up there. Maybe those who can pay landscapers, land keepers to do the work will have it nice and will be able to relax when they get up there. I don't think that's the case for most of us, though.
  14. I have given it thought many times, and almost did buy a cabin and some acreage a number of years ago. Very glad that I didn't, but that's me and my situation. I, like Geno would have bought it cash money and if I were to buy it today I would do the same. As Geno put it, the seller can sit on the property until eggs hatch if he is insulted by my offer. I surely won't pay top dollar for land just because the seller feels insulted. The sellers motive is to try to sell for the most money possible, while my motive is to buy for the least amount of money. May the best person win. These days if some of these sellers really want to sell it in this down economy they'd better suck it up and not be so sensitive to feel insulted with offers. They better be happy that they are getting ANY offers at all, because it just may get to that point where they won't get any.
  15. I don't know about that either. If an accurate poll could be taken I would bet that there are way MORE farmers and people who live on rural land full time that are selling out to the gas companies compared to people who bought land for weekend getaways. Why? Because it is harder for them to make a living and the extra income from these gas companies is something most of them can't pass up. I highly doubt many these days will lose sleep over what will become of their old land when someone else buys it. In most cases the seller says "thank you very much" and happily runs off with the loot he just got to pay off his other debts.
  16. LOL!! The guy I heard about carried the deer up 3 flights of stairs! I guess his drag up hill didn't end in the woods! LOL
  17. What some owners consider reasonable is probably still WAY overpriced in today's market. Sure they may feel insulted with a low ball offer, but a buyer won't luck out and maybe get a real good deal if they start offering what the owner considers reasonable. I would darned sure low ball them in todays market. If they want to sell it, then they need to negotiate and I may come closer to what they consider reasonable. Not like they are getting swarms of buyers making high offers to them these days. If they did they wouldn't have been sitting on these properties for as long as some of them are.
  18. Tons??? I wouldn't doubt that there must be someone out there who is jewish and also hunts, but to say tons?? You've got to be kidding, right? I honestly can't believe that. Jewish people loved to vacation in the Catskills for many years and many of the old resorts were owned by Jews. Hunting was surely NOT part of their Catskill experience, I am pretty certain of that. I googled "jewish hunters" and here is a little tidbit I found. http://www.shemayisrael.com/publicat/hazon/tzedaka/sport.htm The points made here are exactly the impression I have gotten from jews on the subject of hunting. As a group the have absolutely NO interest in any of it, that is why you saying that you know TONS of Jewish hunters honestly sounds like the BS statement of the month on this forum! LOL
  19. Reminds me of someone who lived in an apartment in Queens. He shot a deer and brought it up 3 flights to his small apartment and skinned and butchered it in his bathtub! LOL Where there's a will, there's a way.
  20. One ethnic group that I have NEVER seen interested in hunting even in the slightest way are jewish people. I have seen asian, hispanic, black hunters but never a jew. I reckon deer meat wouldn't be considered kosher. Their choice I guess, will only leave more for the rest of us! LOL
  21. I wish I were you guys, maybe then I would be more willing to buy land. Only in my wildest dreams would I be able to make a 3 plus hour trek to it every weekend. I know I have plenty of chores and things to do at home on weekends, never mind dealing with the kids needs that need to get done close to home. If I go somewhere each weekend, when does this other stuff get done? For most of us life gets in the way of spending each weekend away in the boonies.
  22. I'll have to take a closer look at it. I know he got the barrel brand new because I ordered it for him, but I guess some sort of defect is possible. I just find it quite annoying and unacceptable having to pry out those cartridges. I wouldn't think that much effort should be needed on a gun, especially a gun in that price range.
  23. Yeah, I've read that they are supposed to have some sort of ejector that pushes the cartridge out about 1/8 of an inch which is honestly very little. Especially on a case that's been shot and has expanded a bit. I have to take a closer look at that extractor this year just to see how it's really supposed to work. I've read other complaints about the difficulty in removing spent cartridges just like we've had. I realize this is a single shot rifle and one should make the first shot count, but to me the Encores cartridge extraction is a big negative against it. I know it's a very versatile gun, but it's not a cheap gun, so I think I would expect a bit better from Thompson as far as this is concerned. I've also shot a Ruger no 1 and it's obviously less versatile than the Encores, but it has NO such issues with extracting cartridges from it in comparison.
  24. I don't own one, but have shot one numerous times. My uncle owns an encore with a muzzleloader barrel and he also has a .308 barrel for it. I find the gun to be very heavy with the muzzleloader barrel on. You can buy a muzzleloader at half the price of an Encore that will be way lighter in weight. I also don't like the extraction of the empty cartridge case in it's centerfire barrel. Way too hard to pull out once it's fired. I don't know if this is a general issue with all Encores, but you would think for the money they ask for an Encore that they would have developed some sort of ejector to push the cartridge out at least part of the way to make it easier for extraction. I can't see how a hunter could quickly make a follow-up shot if needed, especially in cold weather with gloves on. Compare the Encore extraction, to another single shot rifle like the Ruger no. 1 and the Ruger wins hands down in quickness.
