  1. looks nice , come over and drywall my new loghome and you can hunt my 175 acres..........
  2. Frosty , sunny 26f here setting my expectations low so as not to be too disappointed . Sorry to be so negative, but after my dad died this past June , I,m just not feeling it.
  3. Here's my take on the situation, opening day and gun week , I believe that the bucks were in lock down . Sitting on the pre estrous does and limiting movement . Also , the mast crop is unbelieveable , you can't walk under the oaks without slipping on the acorns. Like walking on marbles, so the deer don't travel to feed and warm weather, feed and rest. Lack of hunters in the woods to move them around. just my 2 cents
  4. Getting dressed up in the stand doesn't seem like a smart idea. How do you put your jacket on with your harness attached to the tree? I wear the hunter safety system , so this is the last that goes on . Take a few extra minutes to walk in and to cool off before getting dressed then get up in the stand . Be smart ..........
  5. Corn fed , he got his buck about 15 miles north of me. Many big deer around here if you wait them out.
  6. Hunted south valley yesterday many tracks in the snow but no deer back home with the tablet in the stand in 9k , snow is almost gone , nothing moving at least I can get some Xmas shopping done lol
  7. Im in 9k alot of amish around me. Opening day of bow , there was more shooting than opening of gun season. Not seeing many deer during gun season a fair amount during bow. I think the deer are in lock down for the opening of gun week. Things should get better I hope. I just burned 3 weeks vacation and saw very few deer and only small bucks.
  8. On behalf of the buck........... I thank you
  9. Hey, we have all been there . Definitely should have put her down with another shot. Hopefully she gets taken by the neighbors. I would think it would be in your best interest to talk to your neighbor , so that you can recover a wounded animal . Maybe a quick phone call or text before attempting recovery, just to give a heads up so everybody is on the same page. Nobody wants to leave an animal for the coyotes.
  10. TC Triumph scoped with Nikon Omega BDC 250, 300 gr Hornady XTP , 150 gr 777. Dead on out 250 yds. Have not used the slug gun in 10 yrs., freezer is always full.
  11. 3 hrs total for myself , from skinning to vacuum sealing. Extra help is always welcome though.
  12. Slow and quiet or slower and quieter
  13. You need to play the wind regardless of what you wash your clothes in. You can't outsmart a deer's nose .
  14. Deer from farm country vs deer from the big woods will have noticeable difference in back fat . Corn, clover , food plot , farm country deer will have a noticeable more amount of fat than a deer than was living on twigs and leaves. The available food sources will dictate the mount of stored fat, big woods deer that don't have the acorns available , and other high fat foods will have less fat than say the year before. Antler size is also affected by the available foods and minerals.
  15. Well the winds increased to 30 plus gusts, the temp is dropping and rain is expected before midnight. I think the deer made a good call to be out and feed before it gets nasty . Now if it stays crappy for a day or 2 , they can wait it out.
  16. In the undersubcribed areas , around the major cities , like Buffalo , Rochester, a shorter season would not benefit the high deer numbers. Car / deer collisions would be through the roof. A 1 buck rule would be better to increase the bucks and antler size. Maybe a special season or doe first before a buck rule .I am not in favor of a shorter season, I hunt from opening day of bow season to the last day of the late season. I enjoy my time in the woods, looking for that big buck. If I wanted to shoot the first buck and doe that comes along, My season would be over in 2 weeks.
  17. I have hunted gun week in Allegany State Park for the last 30 yrs with all the guys , so its a tradition. In the park you can use a shotgun but it must be plugged for no more than 3 shells. (no rifle or hand gun or hunting bear) For the past 10 yrs I have used my scoped ML, for the fact that it shoots like a rifle out to 250 yds. Took a 175 lb doe last yr at 245 yds, I was more proud of that shot than the 10 pt I took at 8 ft on opening day. One shot , yes, but to me its more of the thrill of the chase ,the accuracy of the shot. I get my bucks and does and the freezer always gets filled. It works for me because I shoot alot and I know my ML limitations. I shake my head when I hear somebody unload their gun at a running deer, which they could have taken on the first shot, if they only knew their equipment and practiced enough to build their confidence.
  18. Over the years ,I've had limited success . Small spikes and a few 4pts. come in , look around then leave . That's about it , but I still blind call , rattle , you never know.
  19. Portable climber packed back in about a mile in Allegany state park. My favorite spot took a huge 10 pt last yr and 2 other mountable 8 pts. over the past 30 yrs. With me will be my friends 16 yr old son , who's dad has to work .I'm more excited about Andrew getting a buck than getting one myself. Be safe
  20. 9K spikes and 4pts , noses to the ground , running in circles , a few single does around .My cameras are showing decent bucks at night ,not seeing any during shooting hours. Its starting to get interesting.
  21. I would say this covers the muzzle loading season.... regular season????????????????
  22. When I butcher her , I will remove the lower jaw and have her aged by the DEC .
