  1. when you hang from the hind quarters it allows the blood to pool in the neck/shoulder....the blood remaining there preserves the coat better for mounting... we hang all deer by head at camp unless its going to be mounted.

    Deer Calls

I used to overuse as well. I would think that if a buck was near by he'd run in to check out this bleating doe but nothing like that yet. Now I more or less use it throughout the day every 1-1 1/2 hours I'll do one bleat then wait. My theory is when I use the can I'm just telling the deer "it's ok just a deer here"-

    Deer Calls

I've had luck with the can doe bleat in a bunch of different situations. I've used it on deer from a distance and watched them change route to come near the sound. They weren't running in but definitely seemed much more at ease thinking another deer was near. I've also had success in deer that were spooked but not by me. I watched 2 doe sprint as if being chased about 150-200yds away running away the opposite direction. I hit the can 3x and the deer made a huge circle right to me. I mean right on top of me, 5yds away panting like a race horse. Both deer were breathing so hard the tongues were hanging out like dogs. Was so cool to experience.
  4. Almost looks like a big buck behind his head alllll the way back Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. That's great. I'm gonna check it out this weekend. Cunningham park is 2 blocks from my girlfriends apartment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Where in fresh meadows?! There is a lot of nothing for a deer over there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. I have. From Long Island to exit 19 on NYS Thruway. Trailer with 2 quads. The trailer is registered but I just go thru regular ezpass and never had an issue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. I was bowhunting last year when I watched a red tailed hawk fly off a branch 40yds in front of me. I thought it was cool to watch, until he turned and flew right at me. I kept waiting for him to veer off but when he got to within 5ft or so I waived my arms and screamed out the old "oh sh*t" defense tactic. My father was hunting with his buddy on private property. They had driven there truck in and parked. They met at the truck around noon after deer hunting for lunch. As they were eating in the truck something smashed into the truck shaking the whole thing. They both had no idea what was going on, then it happened again. This time they watched the 300-400lb bear back peddle and start running to ram the side door again. After the 3rd hit they drove up 50yds and stopped. Apparently the bears cubs had wandered up the tree next to the truck. The cubs wouldn't come down because the truck was there. Once they drove up and stopped they climbed down and the 4 bear took off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Pm me if your interested. I can give you some measurements and simple directions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Just 2 of 7 I have on my property. The skids are good for a frame. I usually seal up with plywood. The one in the tree is fully enclosed. Porcupine LOVE plywood so wrap in aluminum if you want to leave out permanently. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Suffolk is tough. There are some great spots to hunt but those things are gonna happen. I've had a man and his wife pick mushrooms around me and under my tree for 3 hours. They had no clue I was there. I've also sat all day to have 2 women ride horses on a trail 5 yds from me. The horses took a huge dumps 10 yds from me before and after passing me. I couldn't hold back from saying something because that area was 100% closed off to Horses. Dogs, hunters, joggers, kids on quads, kids smoking pot, DEC, and a freaking peacock have all crossed my path in Suffolk. Guarantee you will experience more frustration. It's part of the game. 13. If I'm not mistaken, aren't some spots no deer hunting during pheasant? I'm talking about Suffolk state land. Maybe it was a specific day but I could have sworn I was denied a spot because it was pheasant hunting in that area only. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Actually by punishing someone for speaking there mind, is taking away his right. For the record I do not agree with a single thing he said, however, he has the Right to say whatever he wants. Same thing when Al Sharpton calls racism anytime a black person is in trouble. I don't agree with anything he has to say, but he has the right to say it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Crazy....I've had some deer do the same but wow that's a lot lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. Phade, just a simple question for you, no hidden agenda.... Is that frozen bloody snow on the one deer's nose that's close up or is it a cut/wound? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. A Hunter is never going to be convinced into becoming and ANTI-hunter. An ANTI-Hunter is never going to become a hunter or support hunting. The picture looks bad on the sport, not all hunters. Pictures like these (this one not as bad as others) remind me of pictures of the Buffalo shot and killed for their hides with their bodies left to rot hundreds of years ago. My problem lies with the disrespect of the animal. I don't like this picture, I don't like the caption...that's my opinion. But to disrespect an animal I/we love to pursue is asinine. If you ask me, they are not true hunters. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. For starters I would say that a successful hunt does not necessarily mean an animal must be harvested....or seen for that matter. In general, scouting before the season is a great way to learn where the deer are and where they go. Coming across tracks and droppings will prove that deer were there but without knowing their patterns, it can be hard to pinpoint where they are coming from and for what reason. Finding bedding and food areas are key to pinpointing these patterns. How was the wind on those days? Blowing the same each day? Wind plays a huge factor in deer travel as they trust their nose. A wrong wind could be blowing your scent to the deer before they get close which is why finding where they come from is important. In other words, your spot may have been a good spot but possibly not on the days you hunted it. It is also important to know that a deer moves differently in late season than they do earlier on. Deer usually stay in their home range but during the rut, bucks search for hot does so they become tougher to predict. As far as hanging permanent stands on public land id say good luck...for some reason stands tend to go missing when being left on state land. Especially when giving pretty descriptive areas of where you are hunting. I'd just recommend holding back specific locations in the future to prevent yourself from frustration... Trail cams are a great tool. Same thing goes with hanging them on state land as does a tree stand. I'm not trying to scare you, but there are clearly some people out there who will take the camera or stand if they come across it. The best advice I think you will get is to go with trial and error. It's a great sport...keep in mind you are hunting in one of the most difficult places to hunt deer In the country. Read a lot, practice, and get in the woods. I've made mistakes while hunting. But I learned from each of them. Hunt hard and shoot straight. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Tasteless. I try to give the animal the respect it deserves... I always keep a rubber band on my stock to put around the deer's mouth to keep the tongue in as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    YES or NO?

1 buck for bow, 1 buck for rifle. Don't shorten the season And maybe get Suffolk to allow shotgun season on the weekends Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. hang Ivory Soap from branches in that area...deer hate that soap for some reason... although it may be easier to lure the deer to you than to scare them away from your neighbors...no telling which way they will run unless your property has something they want... maybe some food plots or creating some thick areas the deer will feel safe. good luck
  23. for the LI doe, I have always found deer on Long Island to have typically smaller bodies than deer upstate. It's just what I've experienced my whole life. Bucks and does. So the 6.5 doesn't shock me too much. I bet she was a healthy deer The 7pt sounds like a monster. I'd say aging a buck from the stand would be noticing mass. In my opinion mass = age. Sounds like he was bigger the year before. Maybe on his way down. and for the 8pt. Sounds like a sweet spot in the Catskills with these big bucks your talking about. Need a partner? Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. I think it's a good idea but maybe the reason it's not in NY has to do with majority of the hunters being weekends warriors...I just feel there are more everyday of the season hunters in other states than here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
