I would think a dozen for a turn out would be pretty successful. Always some who don't show up for one reason or another. I'm on call for snow plowing, but short of that issue, I'll play.

Theres a few guys on this board from southern Dutchess; should get a few more.

For those interested google up "Ed Hubel" and his "12 ga From Hell" threads on a few other gun forums. He uses modified 50 BMG brass in his big bore projects and is interesting reading about his load developments when he started to do full brass cartridges in shotgun platforms.

Yep, one guy had 2, another 3....I had 5 on my bow and 5 in the car. I would think the same.

Honest, I like to just shoot. Can get 22 yds in my shop and plink often year round. Have a half dozen 3d targets I sprinkle about the property and with hilly terrain it can be fun. Having 2 permanent bag targets set up makes it easy to just shoot a dozen or two whenever and from undercover if needed. Don't hunt much with one, don't care for sitting in a stand, and never said I could out hunt anyone ever. Much more disciplined folks out there than me that hunt, you included. I'm good at killing stuff with a rifle, and comfortable what my strengths are.

I don't understand the concept of shooting arrows into groups. I wouldn't have any arrows that weren't damaged. Picked up bow at dealer, second arrow hit the knock off first and third arrow split first. Shop owner said maybe I shouldn't do that anymore. LOL That was it for me, carbon arrows cost more then I want to pay to begin with. I got an invite on another forum to a 3d match and robin hooded another guys arrow, and it was really uncomfortable as that guy only brought 2 arrows along for the day and it was second target of course. Aimed off target rest of day, and still do some 3d, but solo.

LOL....I just hit the 10,000 mark at just under 2 years now on my 2017. Guess I have better get driving or I will never catch up.

Where is Toyota dealer in Hyde Park?

Back mid 2000's; there were a fair amount of guys heading for Cape Buffalo and larger using 45-70's loaded with stout bullets and max loads. Many wanting to push the envelope of a old school cartridge with American roots to show it could be done and trying to meet the legalities of the game department standards for energy. There was much discussion on bullets and loads in many circles (web, magazines, etc) at the time. Most achieved the results they were looking for......others?, not so much. Can be a formidable load with modern components, powders, and rifles that can handle them.

Those 350 gr bullets and a milder load would be just the ticket for fun shooting. The 458 win mag I have is not a plinker with 500 gr bullets for most.

What kind of wood?
Dinsdale replied to 2012_taco's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
The best way to ID wood is from looking at the end grain cell structure; this also allows one to differentiate species specific in class.....scrub oak vs red oak for example. A tangential cut also helps....google that. For scroungers looking at picking up non ID'd wood a terrific book is Bruce Hoadleys "Identifying Wood with Simple Tools" put out by the folks who publish Fine Woodworking. Other good resources are Forest Products Laboratory at University of Wisconsin. Get a chance also pick up "Understanding Wood" also by Hoadley. Can find used copies on Amazon at reasonable prices. Get a chance to meet Bruce he a interesting guy to talk too; he used to guest lecture years ago, but not sure if he does that anymore. (professor at U. Mass Amherst) -
Good stuff! Spent Thanksgiving fishing in Brazil, just may have to spend more holidays south of the border.

Using eggs? This whole centerpin thing has me intrigued after seeing guys on another forum using this very successfully. On my bucket list now to try it out.

Italian bolt action with interchangeable calibers
Dinsdale replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Takedown guns and those that feature switch barrel capabilities have been around since the turn of the last century. Bespoke makers have always offered this feature using several different methods to remove barrel/fore end from receiver. Thats nothing new. Travelling with smaller, discrete cases has always been the desire of those going far afield. But the offering of practical mass produced multishot takedown/switch barrels at cost point where one can achieve a sales return is relative modern concept. Lots of single shot switch barrel, look at popularity of TC offerings. And TC tried their hand with their Dimension rifle and swapping barrels. Blaser is most successful selling roughly 110K R 93's and doubling that since 2008 with the newer R 8. Very hard to beat the repeat ability of their system with scope/barrel/bolthead swap all coming back together without a re- sighting required. On wood quality; most folks think of this backwards. Its the high grade stock that is easy to repair and re finish. I don't treat my stocks any different from composite to some unique walnut (English,Turkish,French) and I can clean up a high quality stock easier with a clothes iron and some oil. Its stamped checkering and spray finishes that are a PIA. -
Anyone want to bet an over/ under how many pages this thread will be?

Italian bolt action with interchangeable calibers
Dinsdale replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Lots of Euro makers offer switch barrel guns.Blaser, Kreighoff, Mauser, Sauer..... The Sauer 200 and the next generation 202 have been using a receiver with similar clamping for a switch barrel since mid 80's, and you don't have to take off the bottom metal to change out different barrels. Sauer milled in scope bases for their light weight version of the 202 with alloy receiver body. I think my 200 in 30-06 is from 1988 IIRC. That changing the screw torque on the action will need a wrench to be repeatable, and the 200/202 suffers the same issue with scope mounted to action and barrel being swapped. It requires a check and resighting after a swap. Its close, but it does shift. Sabbati hurt their reputation producing some double rifles for Cabelas and cheating how they achieved a grouping. They dremeled the crown to try and manipulate the POI as the proper way is very labor intensive. They got caught by some customers and all that asked got refunds and some hinky business by Cabelas has some of those lemons floating around on the market. -
I noticed this outfit will be at the Harrisburg outdoor show in early Feb. Depending where OP is coming from in NY, not too bad a drive to have a face to face. Have booked a few trips without sizing up an outfit face to face; but usually I know more than a few folks who have been there and they in turn are experienced with finding better than average places to go. But generally speaking I like to have a little personal contact. I find it easy to work in my questions list I use into a conversation then going down it point by point. One hunt I talked to owner in 2008 and was impressed enough I finally had things come together in 2017 to actually go there, in the mean time I kept track of reports and in touch with other folks who used him that I knew. So I weigh that contact heavily in making a decision. One thing in that department is making sure actual company reps are at a show, its become more common to just have a couple former clients looking for a discount trip manning a booth. I sometimes will help at a show, but only if just help; too much $$$ on the line without the folks actually running the hunt being there IMO.

+1, Sweets and Shooters Choice. I always do #6 with Shooters Choice to make sure Sweets is gone. Good enough for Jarrett, good enough for me. RIFLE CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Run 1 patch, wet with Shooter’s Choice, through the bore. 2. Wet a brush with Shooter’s Choice, then run it through the bore approximately 10 times. 3. Run 2 patches with Shooter’s Choice again to clean out any dirt left from brushing it out, then run 2 dry patches through again to dry the bore. 4. Run 2 patches sopping wet of Sweet’s solvent through the bore and let stand for approximately 10-15 minutes. 5. Run 2 dry patches through the bore to dry after Sweet’s solvent. 6. If the patches come out with a fair amount of green (melted copper), a second brushing with Shooter’s Choice is recommended. 7. Swab out the chamber with a bore mop. 8. Apply Shooter’s Choice tube grease to the rear of locking lugs of bolt and a dab on the helix curve, on the rear of the bolt (cocking cam).

being from WNY, anything more than a few grunts are missed. And I grew up in Buffalo area; so can play the WNY vs southeast region 3 where I now reside game from both sides.

I've just shot Noslers etip 168 30 cal in a 30-06 on game in the deer to elk size class with very uniform results earlier this year. Good clean kills from a variety of angles and dependable expansion judging by the exits. Didn't recover any on a sample of 11. Also have used Federals Trophy Copper, another polymer tipped copper bullet, also with terrific results. Have used un tipped TSX but limited on sample size, range results are always excellent for accuracy. With todays bullets, hard to go wrong with any of them for performance. I like 2 holes and some speed so even in conventional bullets I lean to stiff construction vs huge expansion. YMMV.

FWIW; I have never booked a whitetail hunt; but have booked quite a few others. What stands out to me is a lot very nice deer and some close to 200" whitetails for very inexpensive pricing for that level. What gives? Most guys I know who book whitetail hunts are looking for multiple stand locations and being able to select the one they want. A few have been disappointed with guide putting them in poor for the wind locations for a day. Ask lots of questions......google what to ask a outfitter.
