  1. Just goes to show where not paying attention will get you.
  2. http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=1614821 http://www.morrisdailyherald.com/2011/11/01/local-hunter-faces-41-criminal-counts/anz05br/ http://www.carmitimes.com/features/x2086385482/Three-arrested-in-major-deer-poaching-case Found this interesting.
  3. No but i could ask, i went to college with a guy that is now a ranger. The guys we went to college with would have never let him live that down if it had been him.
  4. The most important thing is to figure out is other hunters. The farther hunters have to travel or the harder an area is to get to the less likely it is to get pressure. Figure out where they park how they come and go to there stands and most importantly stay in the stand until you get a deer or it gets dark. Look for escape routes from the areas that get pressure. Deer know where to go when the lead starts flying they will remember how they survived last time and will repeat the process. It will usually involve the thickest gnarliest crap you can find that only a crazy person would deal with (and deer). I wouldn't touch a call, sent or set of horns during gun season. I have had several deer that i have watched get pushed to me by other guys from a distance. I have sat in the stand looking at a bunch of pumpkins move around through the day and when they get up for lunch BOOM i drop the deer. I could go on but it would be just more of the same. Its what the hunters are or are not dong that matters not the deer. If you have been doing what the majority of other guys do for the past three years it might be time to re-consider. Do the other guys you hunt with shoot a lot of deer? Just my 2 cents.
  5. Third directly adjacent to the 2nd is what i meant to say.
  6. They are sneaky little sob's. The first place i went took me along the top of the pasture (inside). He was bedded 20 yards up hill of the pasture and could see me walk right by. I found two other beds that he had right by him. First was about 10 yards away and second was directly adjacent to the second.
  7. Thats from Yesterday - found him lying in his bed still kickin.
  8. Well at least i just found out i can hit them at 5 yards
  9. Surprised no one put up these. Moose Tiny
  10. I can Finally contribute to this thread. The full story http://huntingny.com...ins-chronicles/
  11. 10-31-11 I Got over to my old bosses place a little after 8 this morning. I was up on the hill standing a little ways from where i last saw him shortly there after. I walked the path of least resistance first for about 100 yards and didn't find anything. So i circled back to the start and went downhill to check along the stream just in case but i figured he wouldn't be there because its all horse pasture. Once both of those possibilities didn't pan out i went to the very top of the hill. The neighbors property is a triangle shaped thicket of apples and other crap that goes down the hill and wraps around it (hard to explain). So i go back and forth at 10-15 yard intervals cris crossing back and forth across the hill. On my 7th pass i was close to the pasture again (i could see fence through the thickets). Then i caught just the slightest bit of movement and i saw tine sticking up. I turned to draw and my jacket caught some golden rod and he tried standing and gave me a nice window to tuck one behind his shoulder which put him down for the count.
  12. I do on a normal basis - standing, Kneeling, elevated platform, out of my tree saddle, awkward angles and even use my kids swing set as a "shoot threw" to try and simulate limbs and have obstacles to clear.
  13. Its not just bucks its does as well. Normally once i decide to shoot all i am trying to do is pick my spot. I caught a glimpse of rack and new it wasn't a little guy so my mind went on auto pilot from that point. I just don't think i am picking my spot.
  14. That's just it my shot tonight i didn't have time. From the time i first caught a glimpse of the deer to the time i pulled the release it was tops 30 seconds. Probably was half that in reality. I spotted him, moved, drew, grunted shot. I wasn't thinking i was going off of pure instinct. Normally I think that benefits me.
  15. Well i did it again tonight. Another shot and no deer - hopefully i find him tomorrow. As far as i can figure i got a bad case of target panic. I have no issues at any reasonable yardage in the back yard or picking an object of unknown yardage and hitting it. Put a deer in front of me and I fall apart. The next time i draw down on a deer i will be forcing my self to go supper slow no mater what. I got to get this under control. Anyone got any other solutions?
  16. 10-30-11 This is getting ridiculous. Stopped by my old bosses house this afternoon. I shot the s@#$ for a little while and decided what the hell i will go up and sit some where. So i get to the top of the hill and the wind was swirling, rising, dropping so i wasn't sure where to go. After a minute i decided to tuck into the Frasier Firs and just stand there about 15 yards down the hill from some apples. Trees were loaded plus the deer like to cross the top of the hill along the tree line. Had pretty good cover standing among a bunch of 6' Christmas trees. I was banking on the winds calming toward dark and then having the thermals revers down the hill. Got situated around 5:00 and about half an hour after getting in i thought i heard something in the woods a hundred yards off to my left. I looked for a while and didn't spot anything so i went back to watching the apples. Then i heard it again and this time it sounded closer and it sounded like something crossing the ravine. The I spot a rump sticking out from behind a con-color. I see rack moving through the trees so i spin around 180 degrees and move down several rows of trees to the last row of 6 footers. Draw just as he walks out into the short con-colors. He crosses into my row at 24 yards and i grunt. Let fly and thwack low and back. Runs off to the edge of the horse pasture. I walk down and pick up my arrow which is covered in a combination of dark red blood and stomach matter along with a nice pile of belly hair. Pulled out a small game head and took a mushroom head off at 20 yards - i give up. Going back in the AM to look with my bosses help. Hopefully he holes up and dies in the thicket above the pasture. Already got Deer Search programed into the phone. Only thing i can figure is i am rushing the shot and pulling them. 4 shots none in the boiler maker. One high, one low, one forward and one back - WTF.
  17. 10-29-11 Went over to hunt the farm again with one of the stands i rarely get to hunt due to a East wind, temps around 32 and light snow. Got in and remembered i didn't trim the lanes for this spot this year. Tucked into a gnarly multi-stem crab apple with a built in seat on a limb. Two fresh scrapes within 20 yards and a bunch of real apples dropping. Sat till 10 and didn't see a thing. Still hunted down through a bottom and found another scrape and some tracks from yesterday but still no deer. No hunting tonight - packing the house and i have to get caught up on some work. Off to look at a couple houses tomorrow after church and keeping my fingers crossed i can get an evening sit in at my old supervisors house.
  18. 10-28-11 Drove 400 miles through prime deer country during prime time over the last two days and saw 2 deer - TWO!!! and one was dead on the side of the road WTF. Anyway the one that was not dead i saw this AM. Coming up the back way from the house to 390 / Mount Morris on the south side of Letchworth. Spotted him on a hill side 200 yards out beaded. I could see rack without the binos so i slammed on the breaks and hit the shoulder. Pulled out the glasses and watched him for a few minutes. 16-17 inch spread 8pt. Probably 3.5 years. Never moved just sat there watching each other. Waiting for Laundry to finish now then hit the sack and early to rise.
  19. I have been taking stock of where i sit lately. The last couple of years have been a real issue with management and a complete change in course of what we did and how we were doing it. Its been pretty demoralizing to the staff so much so that many are looking for positions. That being said the economy sucks and those jobs are a needle in a hay stack at this point. On the up side i have one of the most flexible jobs i know of and i get to hunt like crazy. My job is secure (no overtime) but decent pay. That being said it gets tight from time to time with a single income wife, 3 kids and one more on the way. But all in all i think i am pretty blessed. And as for the bad points relating to work, as my father in-law says "out live the bastards"
  20. Ive been shot at three times by individuals that i believe were sober. I don't want to take my chances with a guy that has alcohol in his system.
  21. Ditto I bought the 3D leafy suite last year and got caught by a buck at 15 yards up on a stream bank while i was crossing. Looked right through me. Had a doe wind me two days ago and she knew i was there but could not pick me out she would look to my right, my left and right at me but no reaction.
