I was a Philipsons yesterday and over heard two guys talking about how they cant wait for bow season and how much fun its going to be using the crossbow. They sounded like they already had them and were planning on using them this year. I was in a hurry otherwise i would have struck up a conversation with them. I wonder how much of this we will see - (use of x-bow during the bow season). I have blown a couple guys in for using muzzle loader during bow season. Apparently if the tag can be used during either season then you can use the weapon of choice during either season as well.

I'm been watching one like that in my back yard...

Working or shooting the bull? I was there Monday and saw butch but couldn't really talk due to my ankle biters being in melt down mode. -
As much as i respect Alsheimer for his photography and knowledge i don't buy that the moon has anything to do with the rut. I have read almost all of his books and just cant swallow that the rut will be any different from last year unless the axis of the earth changes. His original theory was based off of work with a fisheries biologist that studied the moon phase effects on the breeding cycle of tropical fish. The tropics doesn't have much of a change in photo period (length of day) due to the proximity to the equator. The rut is triggered by photo period - I.E. length of day not moon. Cold weather is fuel to the fire. I will post up a document sent to me by a biologist in Ontario CA. about gestational back dating he has done. The gestation period of a white tail is a given period of time (just like humans) although i don't recall what the period is. Based on roadkill and fawn drop data from the spring you can figure out when the doe's were impregnated and therefore the rut. Anything other than that is nothing more than speculation. Just my 2 cents

I dont pay attention to the moon any more. First week of Nov every year for me.

I know the barrel is overbored - hence the patterns. As for reduced recoil Gun kicks like a mule. Much more so than a lot of others i have shot with the same loads. I am young and i can handle it now but i have a feeling in another 25 or 30 years i will have to retire it :-\ In the mean time im going to try like hell to wear it out. As for the porting i dont notice much but my buddy notices the noise ;D

http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/big-buck-zone Killing to many does Hunters can you hold up your end of deer management. and Don't let NYB eat our young. "my personal favorite"

I don't know about the 500 but i have a 835. It will out pattern any other gun i have shot and its very reliable. Even after 12 years of crawling around chasing turkeys and spending lots of time in a layout blind getting covered in crap.

Artic shield makes some nice stuff at its not to much coin. I bought a ASAT leafy suit and just wear it over whatever i want now (camo or not).

Anyone interested in starting a DMP swapping thread. I got the idea from archery talk where there is a broad head swapping thread. Post up what DMPs you may not want and what you would be willing to trade for. I got a 9H i would consider swapping for a 9P, 9Y, or 7J.

I live in 9x hunt 9P, 9Y, 9K, 9N, 9H,and 9S

Food plots work great around here ;D

Nothing At one point earlier i felt a little shaky but just thought that was the coffee talking.

Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?

The NY age structure is way out of whack. We have a disproportion number of young bucks with very few older deer. If you have ARs in place to protect the young bucks or at least some of them then you should get more yearlings surviving to maturity (or at least another level of it). The theory being that if you have a more balanced herd I.E. a 1:1 or 1:2 buck to doe ratio vs. what we have now 1:3,4,5,6,7,8 etc. etc. You wont have as many "teenagers" doing the breeding and the majority of it will be done by older deer because the young bucks will have a harder time finding a doe that is not with a buck. The rut should also be better and when i say better i mean shorter and more intense. In theory you should also see more daytime movement. There isnt going to be a doe in estrous behind every tree or if there is there is a better chance she will already have a buck tending her so they will have to go looking more. Because the bucks will have a harder time finding does this should translate to more daytime movement. With more bucks to do the breeding the rut should condense because few does will "miss" getting bred the first time around. As it is now a doe can get completely missed the first or in some cases the second time. As it is now fawn drop is staggered in the spring over a couple of months. If you breed all the does at the same time you should get a more uniform fawn drop which should lead to a better survival rate because they will all be born earlier vs. later. That will give them an edge come fall. It should also cut down on the "second rut" when some of the yearling does come into estrous. Those too should be more condensed and more intense. Larry has a point antler Letchworth has a deer problem. So how do you put a bigger target on a does back? Answer take away the number of racked targets in the woods. Just because there are more big bucks running around doesn't mean they are as stupid as a button. They have gone through several years of having hunters running around the woodS throwing lead. They know its safe in the gorge where the majority of guys will not go. PA has seen a increase in doe harvest and i would suspect the same to happen in Letchworth or NY as a whole if AR is implemented. You dont know what the framers of the policy intended. It may not be in the master plan of AR to target doe harvest to control the population in the park but if it works so be it. Yes a earn a buck program would do the same thing but from what i have seen on here earn a buck would not go over real well with the community and in the end i would imagine that Letchworth wants to decrease the deer population and how it gets done is a means to an end, nothing more. DEC said it before there is no biological reason for AR. And i have a really strong feeling that if BIGGER RACKS were not in the equation we would not even be having this debate. I went to school for wildlife biology and i understand (at least the basics) pretty well. As a bow hunter i would love to see a better rut and increased chance at a mature deer. But not at the expense of my freedom to choose what i harvest. WE DONT NEED AR.- 1885 replies

I live in 9X and Hunt 9P a lot. There are not that many DMPs because the population is low. 9X is completley wooded with the exception of a few old farm fields. Agriculture is dead in 9X. 9P is dying with the exception of a few farmers and the Amish that are moving in. If you want deer to hunt you need agriculture (another reason to buy local when it comes to food / produce). Its not a coincidence that all the WMUs that have high DMP numbers are also in the most productive agricultural areas (with the exception of the suburbs). Farms provide a large, very nutritious food source with lots of edge cover for wildlife. Same reason there are not millions of deer in the ADKs and Catskills. Same reason midwest has so many deer. I cant figure out why every one form the Buffalo - Rochester area drives down to hunt 20 acres around my house. I pass them on the way north to hunt ag land.

I don't do a lot of business with them. I stopped by about a month ago and found a browning down jacket on a 80% off original price rack. Tag said 60$. I peeled back the stickers to find the original at 130$. So i am thinking great and it was my size. I couldnt pass it up so i take it up to the register and it rings up as 60$. I told the clerk it was on a 80% off rack and the original price was 130$ so he marks it down the 80%. Just then the manager says whats up? and the clerk tells him and he says oh no thats a 240$ jacket. I look at him with a WTF face and said it was on a rack for 80% off original price which was 130. To which i get the reply well it was on the wrong rack. I told him then you got another half dozen of these on the wrong rack and walked out. Got home and looked up the jacket 139$ straight from browning. http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/clothing/detail.asp?value=A003&cat_id=304&type_id=753#center

Thanks for your service. Get in over a half mile or up a steep grade or across water and you will not see as many guys. Your going to run into someone regardless but get there early. If i am not mistaken west point allows some form of hunting for service members. Here is DECs mapping program which you can turn on the WMU borders and it shows state land as well as a topo and areial image. www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45415.html

So i have been stoked that my wife is finally getting her license but now Im not so sure. She just came home from soccer practice and i got criticized about my choice of WMUs for the DMP lottery. :-\
