  1. Death Rate/100,000 Licensed Drivers 10.85 Injury Rate/100,000 Licensed Drivers 1658.55 that's from 08 http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/stats-arc.htm
  2. For the last 5+ years all we ate was venison. Shot 4 last season and it is about out now. Also had a 1/4 cow which we are about half through. Thats my Wife, me and 3 little girls. I now hate beef i realize.
  3. And invite us over. I will shoot every damn one i see and there will be many a BBQ. I might just go out of my way to hunt the little SOB's.
  4. I just put in for a job in that area. Hadn't given a thought about these guys.
  5. My great grandmother taught, grandmother taught, mother taught and wife is certified to teach. My great grandmother had classes of 50+ and never had an issue. By the time my mom was ready to retire she had kids that routinely hit, kicked, spit, swear and do every damn thing opposite of what was said. My great grandmother had consequences she could dole out and if that wasn't enough i will guarantee you the kid would get what was coming to them at home. Now days what are you going to do? And if you have parents that don't give a damn your up a creek without a paddle and you will most likely get the blame. You can argue that the quality of the teachers has gone down hill and I am not saying they are all spectacular but the quality of the parents isn't exactly a shining star either. There i corrected my spelling so it look like my mom dun learned me good.
  6. Cow parsnip is probably the most common mix up for hogweed.
  7. Guy that works for me just found two more patches of Hogweed. One small one at a persons home we work with and another along a stream in Catt co. 150+ plants. Owner tried to take care of it himself and ended up with burns all over. If you see this stuff i highly recommend staying away. If you get the sap in your eyes it can blind you and the blisters can persist for over a year in some cases. If you find it (especially now) you will know it. 6-8-10+ feet tall with purple blotches on the stem and huge leaves. Its going to seed right now and the seed heads will be as big around as dinner plates. If you end up with this on your property the seed can persist for years so you might have to be eradicated multiple times.
  8. I know i plan on signing her up for one tomorrow. She only mentioned this yesterday afternoon. I am going to be calling region 7 in the am and give the rod and gun club a call to see when they scheduled theirs.
  9. What he said. Seriously If all you have to do is poke it with a stick then leave it well enough alone. I may not agree with all of VJPs posts or opinions or the opinions of anyone on here for that matter but i don't go around pissing on there shoes just for the hell of it. If you don't like the conversation stay out of it. Now back to the conversation. There is no accountability in the government. Without accountability they will piss away what they have and then turn to you for more. They will never accept blame for there actions or try and correct it by changing course. As for the "what this has to do with hunting" question - EVERYTHING. It was already stated - no firearms - no hunting. But maybe if you are a member of NY Bowhunters that is what you want, a bow only season. But i am sure once someone died due to a broad-head in the back the bows would be the next thing on the chopping block. Finally VJP as for your view on plucking feathers and slowly eroding the rights. There is only one branch of the government who would be organized enough to carry that out, The military and i don't think they have turned against there own country. I trully believe that these people have such a twisted reality or are so out of touch with it that they believe they are doing what is best. They are eroding our rights but its not what i would consider a organized effort. Other than groups like HUSU or PETA. The best advice i can give anyone is educate yourself. The more you can put someone on the spot and make them prove it the better off you will be. Hold government officials accountable or its only going to get worse.
  10. That was the list I am referring to. Its got classes that we could make but i hope to find another one that may work out a little better. I am going to call about the home study course in Cattaraugus on the 13th to see if there is any possibility that we could get her in. I talked with the region 9 coordinator for DEC today at church and there is at least one more at the Richburg rod and gun club that isn't on that list but i am going to look for more up my parents way for the end of the month.
  11. Well my wife just said she wanted to take the plunge and get it done with. Shes mentioned it a few times before but it never seemed to materialize. She said she could wait until next year because we don't have the pressure caner yet but i don't really care we will freeze it if need be. I guess 80$ for a case of canned beef is getting to her. I looked at the DEC list but i am looking for a short class (1-2) days. I cant get a babysitter for 3 or 4 nights. Anyone know of any classes in Allegany or Catt co. that are not listed? Or Madison, Onondaga, or Oneida from 8/27-9/3? Going to see my parents that week so it could be any class because the babysitter is free. Any help would be appreciated. I am going to give DEC a call on Monday to see if i cant find something.
  12. Normally i have a brassica plot in by now but i have been a little busy. I was thinking of putting in some oats next weekend instead of the brassica.
  13. Pretty soon they are going to be putting a bounty on our heads. :-\
  14. If the NZ bow season is from sept. 27 - Oct.21, than the first is legal, and so is the second, or is it not legal to use a bow during gun in the NZ? Regular season in NZ starts on Oct. 22, no? I don't see what the problem is here. Can someone please elaborate? I stand behind my original statement Elmer see my edit above.
  15. Alright maybe I am missing something. NOT IF he shot the first one in the northern zone with a bow on the 15th or the 19th that would make the second one poached. The SZ deer was behined his house on the 4th of Nov. in Wayne co. That means the only way you could fill the second buck tag would be during the regular season which doesn't open until Oct. 22nd in the NZ and mid November for SZ.
  16. That first deer was shot on October 15th (he says on Monday) he posted it on the 19th. The second it says was shot on the November 4th. Which he says was with the bow and behind his place. According to this post in his post history he lives in Wayne co. http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php/topic,4337.msg53960.html#msg53960 Regular deer season in the northern zone opened the 22nd. Unless i am missing something that means the second one was poached. He also states he doesn't hunt much other than his place in the gas price thread.
  17. I knew a kid in High School that blew off his big toe. I have been shot at three times and had a buddy get shot at twice the same day as i had one of my close calls (i think by the same guy). That was on public ground opening day outside Syracuse (haven't hunted public property other than the ADKs with a firearm since). I am very particular about who I am with and where I hunt during gun season now. When i took my hunter safety course by buddy and I took the places of a kid in Syracuse who was killed by his buddy when they were playing with there dads 12 ga.
  18. Always be a compound for me unless i cant pull it back then its off to the X-bow. I however would love to see them given the green light for my wife. 1. she doesnt have the time to practice like i do. 2. I have a serious doubt in my mind if she will be able to pull a bow back at legal weight. Shes 5'9" and weighs in at a whopping 115lbs. I have a youth bow set at 40lbs and she cant draw that. She wont be able to find time to do strength training and practice for a vertical.
  19. http://www.google.com/search?q=crane+fly&hl=en&biw=1280&bih=880&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Ks0iTqDdLaT40gGHo_28Aw&sqi=2&ved=0CE0QsAQ Google image search for crane fly. A "stick bug" - walking stick cant fly. At least not to my knowledge - many phasmids are wingless and in species that do have wings they are extremely small. Crane flys legs are extremely skinny. They break off and keep moving (decoy) if bird or other predator trys to catch them.
  20. Crane fly but i doubt European (abdomen is too small). Photo isnt good enough to get species.
  21. Both those bucks were shot in the northern part of the county lots of agriculture up that way (even more so in 1939). Southern part of the county looks alot more like the ADK mtns. and is a completley differnt world.
  22. There are three things that relate to rack size. Nutrition Age and Genetics. Genetics is a crap shoot and something you cant control so i don't think about it plus my own personal belief is that there are bucks with great genetic potential everywhere. If you look at the QDM map WNY and the finger lakes have huge deer becuase of the nutrition. Orleans, Niagara, Genese, Wyoming, Livingston, Steuben, Yates, Ontario Seneca, Cayuga, Wayne this is the NY bread basket (a good part of why the mid west grows some huge deer). If you also look at that map and see the red around Rochester, Buffalo and on the island there are a lot of sanctuaries that let deer get old. There is less pressure around those areas. The ADK mountains don't have the nutrition and i think the weather takes a toll so you don't see as many deer come out of there. That being said the hunting pressure is no where near the southern zone and the deer population just isn't as dense so not as many deer are harvested. But age is definetly on there side.
  23. Trail cam. Watch it and you should be able to tell if they are still in the area.
  24. All right Im calling BS. This is so far off the deep end its not funny WTF. "Individual Biosphere Reserves remain under the jurisdiction of the countries in which they are situated. Some countries have enacted legislation specifically to establish Biosphere Reserves, while in other countries they simultaneously include areas protected under other systems (such as national parks or nature reserves) and other internationally recognized sites (such as World Heritage sites). There are presently more than 525 biosphere reserves in 105 countries. Of these, 47 units are in the united states, of which 30 are manged by the National Park Service." http://usparks.about.com/blparkbiosphere.htm http://www.nps.gov/bibe/naturescience/mab.htm Come on boys do a little research and don't drink too much Kool-aid.
