  1. LOL 3hrs off the island and your upstate you should be a comedian
  2. Its the option. There are enough damn rules and laws. I commend anyone who will pass a young deer i think it will only improve the age structure and quality of hunting if we pass the little guys. I want the freedom to make the choices for myself not have them dictated to me.
  3. You hit it on the head doc. Take a look at the see through NY web site and look at the deputy commissioner, asst. deputy commissioner positions in some of the different state agencies. Every one of them is a POLITICAL APPOINTEE. They are all north of 100k positions, at least in my department they are. And they don't do a thing except waste money. Over a million in annual salary between the ones we got in our department and i work for a small agency. That doesn't include benefits or other "perks". Upper management doesn't do a thing, some management lower down does get some stuff done if your lucky but you will never see anyone at that level cut. We have lost two so field staff so far and they are the boots in the field who actually do the work and provide services to the taxpayer and those are the cuts that are going to continue. Consolidation of services needs to be addressed at both the local and state level and weed out the duplication. Benefits need to be rolled back. Retirement age needs to be raised. Contributions from employees needs to be increased. Those are all just for starters.
  4. All of the above with the exception of Ocean. 75% or better is ice.
  5. I am with Dave, Culver and Center Punch. Its about the right to choose your deer. I used to be all for AR when i was in college - i could afford to be selfish and it didn't matter. That was before my wife and kids. This year I held out during archery and ate my tags, rifle rolls around and i whacked a couple on DMAPs and due to my piss poor shooting skills came up empty on a couple more and found myself staring at a 1.5yr old 4pt with 30 minutes legal shooting light left. Now normally i wouldnt have an issue eating another tag except that i got three little girls that burn through venison like you would'nt believe. Bought a 1/4 cow on top of 4 deer in the freezer and i will be out of meet within two weeks. I am at the point now that i am not sure what i will pass if anything this coming season. I don't do anything really besides hunt and fish outside of family and work. Use to have all sorts of toys - sleds, mud truck, diesel etc. etc. All that is gone. I don't make a ton of money (not that i am going to starve if i don't hunt) but i have come to the conclusion that hunting gives me the most. Its not just about material possessions and flushing money down the drain. I get stuff back i.e. entertainment, knowledge, exercise, time with the family (teaching lessons), time reflecting on life / God, and FOOD. And the tighter things get around my house the less i care about what its wearing on its head and the more i care about what its carrying on its back. Just my 2 cents
  6. Check out some of the windproof fleece stuff. Predator and Nat Gear make what looks to be quality stuff. I am going to pick up a set this year. I have always worn a shell outer layer (usually just rain gear) and layered accordingly underneath - heavy bulky does'nt work - at least not for me. Windproof is a must for me but the rain gear can get a little sticky if its warm and does'nt really breath.
  7. I havent done turnip alone but i have done a brassica combination. Turnip, Kale, and Rape. I always would spray the first weekend of july or last of june and then plant the second week of july. Had really good success. dont know if i am going to do it this year due to the fact that i am trying to move.

  9. I struggled with turning a guy in for a long time, the son of a good friend but consistantly shot 3-4 bucks a year on other peoples tags. Ultimatly i looked at what i would want my kids to see and take away from the situation. I am seting the example for 3 kids this guy sets the example for thousands (and yes there parents should have more influence than him but sadly he is a hunting icon). I am sorry but i feel that those in the lime lite should set the highest standard. Regardless of how bad there infraction may be i have no problem with making an "example" out of him.
  10. Foiles goes to jail I dont think it was steep enough.
  11. POSTED signs are by no means a flat out NO. Knock on doors but don't expect anything. You might get shot down 10 times before you get a yes. Other times everyone says yes. If your looking for specific property types look at orchards and nurseryman - they really don't like bucks rubbing there trees. Crop farms and dairy are hit and miss but still worth a try. I wouldn't bother with a farmers market. The vendors at a FM are small and have small chunks of land but you might find a honey hole. Larger operations have lots of opportunities and the owners are busy running there business and don't usually have as much time to hunt. Be prepared for company because most likely the farm hands will be out there as well. If your looking to identify a piece of property go to the county seat and ask to look at the property tax maps in real property services. If your lucky you can look online on the counties website and they may have electronic maps complete with ortho imagery (areal photos) and sometimes topo overlays. Dont be afraid to butter up the landowner / farmer either. I will often drop by with a zip lock back of fresh perch fillets in the winter, a bag full of turkey jerky in the spring or a venison back-strap in the fall. They will never forget who you are again. I do think selfishness is a problem but its more of an issue for us as hunters. It reflects badly on us and what we enjoy but i am not sure it has that much affect on land access. Sure i know of guys that restrict access to there property because of the "big one" but in most cases when i talk with a guy about why he doesn't let people on his property its because of all the stuff doc listed. I am lucky that i have a job that puts me in contact with a lot of landowners but all the time growing up i was using the above tactics and they work. I am only 28 so it wasn't all that long ago. Just don't give up. I had one piece of property that i asked permission for 10 years straight with no luck. The farmer and I knew each other quite well living in a small community but he just "didn't let anyone hunt". The year before i moved i got permission to hunt that property. Neighbor shot a 150" buck in swamp that year and to this day i have not set foot on the property :'( .

  13. Nice shots. I really like the shot of the tiger beetle. Is the 300 fixed? those are pretty crisp. Making me wish i had the time to get out. I don't even have time to chase thunder chickens let alone go out with the camera :'( .
  14. Some useful info. http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef619.asp http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/housingandclothing/m1166.html Are they big or little? By your description i am guessing little in which case you don't have a whole lot to worry about. If they were big (carpenter ants) you might want to worry. If you end up seeing winged ants in the house you most likely have carpenter ants and you might want to start worrying. First i would check and see if they are getting into anything in your kitchen or pantery. If they are getting food they will keep coming back. Keep any sugar product sealed up. Next i wouldnt bother with spray. I would go the route of bait. Let them eat it and they will take it back to the colony and share it killing the colony from the inside. There are several products that you can put around the outside of your house along the foundation that will act as a barrier. Have someone hold your head under water and see what happens. That's what you are doing - suffocating them. The soap breaks the surface tension of the water and they cant climb out so they drown.
  15. :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :( :( :( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

  17. Here are some info on two of my favorite things to plant for deer Chicory and Brassica. Brassica.pdf Chicory.pdf
  18. A couple months back i wrote a letter to the village board stating my support of culling the herd. Its there job to do what right and cost effective for the community. I don't like this plan as much as what i said they should do "open a special bow hunt". If the Idiots that want to sterilize the deer that's fine put there money where there mouth is and don't use tax dollars to do it.
  19. Its a population cycle. They build up to a point where the population collapses due to the above factors. Happens with all of them i.e. eastern tent, forest tent, and gypsy moth. It would happen that way with deer turkey etc if there was not more outside influence from game managers. To the OP if you get me a couple pics of the trees you have i will ID them or if i cant i will have them ID by one of the guys that works for me.
  20. TROY, NY --(Ammoland.com)- The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association (NYSRPA) in conjunction with the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) have filed suit against the City of New York over the fees charged by the New York City Police Department for the costs associated with the processing of pistol license applications. NYSRPA believes that both the City and State of New York violate the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment by requiring the payment of fees as a prerequisite for the lawful exercise of the specifically enumerated individual civil right to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. “The U.S. Supreme Court has recently made it clear that individuals have a right to own guns. Government cannot place arbitrary financial constraints upon those wishing to exercise this right any more than it can for those wishing to exercise their right to vote, ” said Tom King, President of NYSRPA. Mayor Michael Bloomberg himself publicly acknowledged the indefensible nature of the fee structure last October when he urged the City Council to lower the costs specifically to avoid a lawsuit: “We want to be in compliance with the law … so that we don’t want to lose the ability to have reasonable controls. If we have controls that the courts have ruled too onerous or too unfair, we could lose the whole thing.” The City Council ignored the Mayor and flatly refused to take up this issue. NYSRPA has no choice but to take the issue to court.
