Anybody hunting DUCKS tomorrow ?
Al Bundy replied to Pygmy's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Im ready and raring to go. Im squirming around like crazy at work. Cant wait to leave. My spot has nothing to do with rain so Im good. This early in the season I usually see mallards, some divers, an occasional black. Blacks all over late season. Me and my lab tomorrow and maybe the Mrs will join. She asked this morning what time Ill get up. Tonight when I put all the gear out and check the decoys, my lab will start to go bonkers. Sleep tonight will be difficult because if I move slightly she will wake me up (with lots of energy) and ask if its time to go yet. -
You could do what my grandfather used to when he didnt want to go to school. Go try and find a skunk and get sprayed... Of course not real sure what the deer would do if it smelled skunk. I have a pretty good idea what your coworkers would do though.

Whos going pig hunting with me and goose???? Check this place out. https://www.absolute-hunting.com/driven-wild-boar-hunting-castello-di-vicarello-tuscany-italy.html

The local I met in Tuscany came through and sent me a bunch of jpegs. Not sure what the one with horns is but I wouldn't mind seeing in the woods.

Flying out tomorrow morning for the states. Been a long run but time to get back. Great meetup with goosifer in Venice. We had fun over a few beers. It’s a bit bizarre-o to meet someone from the hunting list in Venice, but good fun. Hopefully I can work out the details and twist goosifers arm (and anyone else’s) a bit to do some pig punting over here. Meanwhile.. duck season looms on the horizon.

I took a series of wrong turns this evening and driving down this pathway that had no business being called a road, I came up on a field with two deer in it. Check out the jpeg. Not sure what they are. Incidentally I came across a hunting store. Literally walking down the street looking for food. They did not sell 7m 08 ammo and looked confused when I asked. Lots of 308 and 30-06. I tried to impress the guy telling him I owned a benelli sbe3. He said that gun was not so popular. So much for that idea. I also asked for a copy of the seasons and regs.

I’m going with honey and hens. For the others some type of amanita and then a wild ass guess of myca caps. I recognize a few good edibles and a few poison ones. Those you don’t know leave off your plate.

I may have made a contact today. Different town, different bar. Hunters were much more friendly and receptive. One guy showed me a ton of jpegs and vids. One had his dogs fighting with a good sized boar. One pic was a boar embedded in the grill of a car. A vid showed a wolf attacking a boar. A deer of some kind with a monster rack, supposedly taken locally. This guy was a major hunter in the area. Sadly the season there closed today and reopens in November. If it was open, I suspect I’d be going in the morning. They told me come back nov 1st. I gave one guy my email and asked him to send me some jpegs. See what happens. For the mushrooms, I did read about the license thing. You can be with someone who has the license.

That could be. I showed a local a picture and asked if they have this here and he said yes to the north. So something. I see signs with a picture of a deer looking creature with a rack on it. Like signs in the US for deer crossing. I also forgot to mention someone said there are pheasant here. I saw two birds that looked like pheasant at least from a distance. Apparently no crossbows here. Hard as hell though to communicate. I’d type in google translate and locals would say yes or no. I think they got tired of me as they all left the bar shortly after I showed up. Ughh.

Dunno about goose but this place would be heaven for me to retire to. Pigs.. mushroom, white tails to the north, I wonder about ducks. Cheap groceries, cheap and good wine, gotta be cheap housing. Great weather. Best tasting peaches I’ve ever had. People are really quite friendly. Ran into a guy today in the grocery store who, said,he lived in LA and nyc 20 years ago. I’ve been to some parts of France including Paris, bunch of places in Spain, touched Germany, Amalfi Coast in Italy. Tuscany gets my blood moving more so than any of those places.

Planning the goose meetup in some days. I am not real sure the date today. Goose meet is in Venice, last stop in the journey. I had fun getting the rental car out of Rome. Today we stumbled on some locals making wine in their basement. A huge press, multiple big glass carboys. They made the mistake of leaving the garage/basement door open and mrs bundy and I stopped and tried to talk with them. We asked to buy a bottle of wine but instead they gave us one that I am drinking right now. I didn’t have a clue what they were saying. I think they liked the mrs. What an adventure.

I awoke to repeated gunshots this morning in Tuscany. We are in the middle of nowhere on the base of a smallish mountain. I took a short walk close to the buildings in the hopes to see hunters and what was hunted. While doing so I found a few bolete buttons. I haven’t keyed them out yet but they are likely boletus edulis, or porcini in local speak. After picking these, I hit the ground when gunfire got closer. At that point I turned around and high tailed it out of there. Turns out gunfire was at wild boar that are thick around here. They use dogs to hunt and it’s like whitetail season in ny with many people hunting. We stopped at a local bar and I did my best to try and tag along with a local. No luck. I’m going to try again and try to make some contacts. If I do, I would love to come back next year for porcini and wild boar. Tuscany is amazing. Edit: the white one I think is a spy mushroom that indicates boletes are close by.

My feet stay warm mostly and I swear it’s due to wearing compression stockings. I wear these and a pair of heavy warm socks on the outside. Usually pretty warm.

There are more ducks than mallards. Yes it sucks the mallard limit is reduced but blacks were increased (haven’t looked, from memory. verify before shooting). I see tons of blacks, redheads. Duck hunting is easy setup for me. Toss a dozen decoys, sit, watch the sun come up. I sat in pouring rain once last year for quite some time. Waders and rain coat kept me bone dry. Great day...

i Would count on more than two hours. It took us about four, stopping in the center of Capri for pictures and a bite to eat. We were moving along at a nice pace. Definitely forget the car service. Nothing really different about the road to Sorrento and it will add time to your journey. You can see it from the water. We jumped on the 9am ferry from positano.

We had a map. Walking from the ferry port area to the Roman ruins is a good walk. You can bus or cab it a little closer but not much. With 4 hours that might be worth it. Just be ready to open your wallet and don’t think about how much goes out. There is a somewhat locals grocery store on the walk up to the ruins if you are going there. Maps and roads are not always the easiest to decipher in these parts. I’m quite good with direction and maps but have found myself questioning the directions at times. me and the mrs try to get off the tourist row and into life as the locals know it, at least somewhat. In Capri and amalfi this means walking like crazy. If anyone is into it, recommend walking from above amalfi, town called Scala down into amalfi. It’s up high on the hills above amalfi and there is a goat type, path down the side of the Mtn. Scala is off the tourist radar mostly but next to a town called Ravello which is for some reason on the tourist radar. Jmp If it’s not to late I might think about skipping the car ride into Sorrento. Take the ferry from positano to Capri. 45 or so minutes. Ferry runs quite often. You avoid having a two hop transit, and more time on Capri if that is more to your liking. When you around? I’m already working on meeting up with goosifer but have time in Rome next few days..

Hey chef.. you recall the place in Capri you ate?? Capri is quite nice. Roman ruins were interesting if you used a bit of imagination. I walked 12 miles on Capri yesterday. Found a grocery store tucked away with almost no signage. Bottle of limoncello for less than half the price in the tourist traps. It put mrs bundy under the table last night. Strong and good stuff. I splurged and bought a high end bottle of wine for 9.00 . Lowest price was under two bucks, average was like 4-5. Kind of makes you stop and think about the markup in the tourist traps. Good hunting everyone.

I’ve actually been trying to convince my hunting buddy to go to the unlimiteds in Montana for sheep. He laughs when I talk about it.

10.8 miles up and down hills behind Amalfi. Dragging a deer out of the woods isn’t this much work. Weather is still hot. I’m beat but still smiling. For those who never ventured here the road is intense. Buses are literally inches from hitting each other at times.

I’ve been hunting the local flora and fauna here. I’ve been successful with Vitis vinifera. A great local variety is here and easily hunted. I’ve also been hunting for Italionisis princessis. Unfortunately this has been a bit trickier to hunt and I’ve been unsuccessful so far. However I have good hunting skills and look forward to future success.

Well I didn’t go bust.. made it safe. Amalfi is pretty cool. Awake for like 30 hours but gotta be done. Positano in the background....

Today is the day.. Heading for Rome on a big ol' jet air liner. Going to meet up with Goosifer in Venice for a glass or two or maybe even three of Italian wine. !!!!!!
