Help!!! New hunter this season -- haven't seen a deer yet
Al Bundy replied to Hank's topic in Deer Hunting
There is a ton of deer in your neck of the woods and public land as well. There used to be and maybe still is a special late season for deer in that area. You are a not awful drive to King Ferry. There looks to be a field to fork over near cortland. Perhaps someone there could hook you up? https://www.qdma.com/new-york/ SEVEN VALLEYS BRANCH 3160 South Hill Rd. This one sticks in my craw. I would have fought this tooth and nail. I see large parcels of land unposted all over where I hunt. Its usually a factor of owners not wanting to take the time to post. Its work, time and a bit of cash. I do think AuburnNYC hit it with his post. Though maybe immoral, does not seem to be technically illegal. I would not want to be in court trying to convince a judge who likely does not know the law, or does not care though. You lose in the eyes of the law and the laws of morality.

You know what else you could do goose. If you hunt from mostly the same few places, you can range trees or objects and spray paint them. So a tree is 20 yards away, spray paint a big 20 on it. Get a few of these around and at least for bow/xbow should be helpful. Wont help you see deer but hopefully will help drop them once you see them.

In the middle of Manhattan.. Im seriously in need of some woods time. x5.. -
Varying opinions on this subject. I have a rangefinder which I use quite a bit during xbow and never during gun. Me and the Mrs. Share it. What I do is pick a tree or object in each direction from where I am sitting and range it. I can use these as reference points to help judge distance. I will also range something at 40 or 50 yards so I know what my limit is. When a deer comes through I can concentrate on the deer and shooting it instead of fumbling with glass for more info. If you are good with distances, I dont really see a need for a range finder. I am not good at distances and find this a great tool. For binos, I bought a nice pair of variable I think 10x a few years ago for the Mrs. as she wanted it. I have not gotten good at using them though. I do carry on a strap around my neck, when I carry it. I have not had a need to glass a deer before shooting it yet. I mostly listen and look. However my hunting buddy constantly uses his binos and glasses like crazy. He consistently sees deer and swears by binos. Hes most times on the ground, standing, looking. Our area is fairly thick and shooting and glassing distances are well under 100 yards. The Mrs. though hunts an open field and mostly uses the binos. For her, in the open field, she sees much further and using glass is a great tool.

I had a relative who was a police officer and avid hunter. He told me once something to the effect of ..... "You would be surprised the amount of people that let me hunt their land. I roll up in my cruiser, dressed in my cop uniform and ask permission. More often than not, I get permission." I'm just across the Hudson from NYC. I hunt CNY though so cant give you any great spots locally. I do want to link up with ATBuckhunter though for ducks/geese on LI one day. Ever think about waterfowl??

If you see your deer go down, do you continue to hunt ?
Al Bundy replied to rob-c's topic in Deer Hunting
Im done if one goes down. So much to do after and so little time usually. Gut drag and hang all take time. -
What is this patch of discolored hair on my doe?

My big concern here is gangrene. Hoping there is none.. -
What is this patch of discolored hair on my doe?
Al Bundy replied to Al Bundy's topic in General Chit Chat
The hair is shorter and not easy to tell if its thinner. I dont think thinner. Possible road rash but is it likely a deer would be dragged? I dont think so. If dragged, I wouldnt think it would be up walking around after. It seemed in good shape except for that. -
The doe I whacked Sunday has two patches of weird hair on it. It looks as though the hair was shaved off and its growing back on. Obviously it wasn't shaved, but what caused this? Buddy thinks it was hit by a car. I wouldnt think hit by a car would cause this. The large patch is hind quarter. The smaller patch is close to the front shoulder. guesses???

Doe down this morning. She came into the woods and stood 30 or so yards broadside. Took the shot and later wished I waited. After the shot I saw a big flag bounding through the field. Likely a buck in tow. I made a good offhand shot with the NULA. Doe went 30 yards and dropped. First deer with the NULA. Meanwhile in another spot, my hunting buddy dropped a yote. About 830 a few doe came by him and didn’t present a shot. A bit later same doe came back running with flags raised pursued by two yotes. Two shots one dead yote and one likely hit. The yotes were on those doe big time.- 9790 replies

Very disappointing opening day in 7J. Zero deer seen. Lots of squirrel. I really need a new spot for gun. Back at it again tomorrow. Very few shots again this afternoon. -

Only a few shots this morning. Lots and lots of squirrel. My new hunting neighbors were out with guns. Not sure they got permission to shoot within 500ft of the houses they were by but I guess not my issue. I saw no deer this morning. Each year opening morning seems to have less and less shots. Hopefully others are seeing more than me. Be safe everyone. -

Live from my hunting camp. A deer bound in front of me on the road coming here. I turned the car around and high beamed the field. A doe walking slowly followed a ways behind by a buck with his nose down. He’d pick his head back up and walk then back down on the groUnd. Not a huge buck but good to see he was sniffing. -
4 degrees where I will be Saturday morning. I don't recall the temp being this low before on opening day.

Turkey feathers beat me to it. I also saw a jackelope.

Welcome. I also am in Jersey but travel to central NY to hunt. Assume you bear hunt in NJ?

Why not use grim reapers? Only thing I have used since getting xbow and they work well. -
Venison sausage, stir fry tenderloins.. Last weekend the Mrs. made a gumbo with very spicy venison sausage. Oh so good.

Your gun and caliber for the SZ opener ..
Al Bundy replied to rob-c's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I’m taking my New ultra lite arms 7mm08. Fairly new rifle, haven’t taken a deer with it. I’m hoping the 10pt I passed on gives me a shot again. -
Yes retrieval came up. He said no problem for me to go retrieve without permission. He also moved a tree stand that was about thirty yards from my stand. It’s now clearly on his land and facing down into his land. I look at this as a very neighborly and thoughtful action. He seems to want to do things right. I am thinking the trail cam idea might be a good idea. He knew where survey posts were and his stand placement was well thought out according to the boundaries. I don’t know when the adjacent land was surveyed but where I hunt has been in the family since the early 50’s and has not been surveyed since. Iron rods with orange caps are visible though. So... I need to welcome this new neighbor and get used to the fact he’s the first one to hunt there since at least early 70’s, likely even before.

Four flatheads came by at 730. I didn’t have the best shot but managed to whistle one to stop. The lane was clear through the scope so I let one fly. Swing and a miss... that was it for the morning. Sooooooo many shots out here. More shots than opening morning of gun last year. -
Spoke to the guy today. Real nice guy or really well at being a fake. Take your pick. We discussed he was right on the line and he said I know not to shoot Onto the other side. nice conversation but I seriously doubt he would pass a deer that wandered by him on my land.
