I heard this long ago from someone. Might work. He said to tie the dog up to like a tree. Then stand near and start shooting. I suspect the dog will go bonkers at first but eventually the theory is the dog settles down and gets used to the shots. It cant go anywhere as its tied up.

I am planning to go out into the arctic weather this weekend and want to make sure I am all legal. This weekend I am assuming is legal for xbow. I shot my xbow/muzzleloader deer during xbow season so that tag is gone. BUT did not use my regular season tag nor did I use any of the doe tags I have. I can use my xbow this weekend to take a buck and tag it with my regular season tag, correct?? I also can drop a doe and use my doe tag for this all using my xbow? I think I am all legal but want to make certain... Good luck to those going out.

A relatives land and neighbor/friend approached him. Actually found out the neighbor said he didn't think I should be shooting toward the road from the ground blind, which I wasn't (and he couldn't see me..). He just ASSUMED since I was sitting there I would be dumb enough to illegally shoot at the road. He also posted the CRAP out of everything (night before opener), including my tree stand which was not off property. He shorted the property by about 40 yards with his posted signs. We had the guy on trail cam walking through the property opening morning. I wonder why he put up posted signs if he was going to ignore the ones I put up. He also parked where I usually park, though its not close to where he was on stand and he had to walk the length of where I hunt, laying down scent everywhere. He was trying to deliver a message to me. This is pure jealousy as far as I am concerned. Now my relative is caught up with his friend. His friend is making this very ugly. No need to post anything. No need to impose his views on how I should hunt. I don't have much hunting land, this is about my only spot. Or should I say WAS my only real spot. How do you fix this..

Hunters/Land owner next to my ground blind said they don't want me in the blind during gun season. Why? They cant see me in the blind. It sounds good until you think about it. I really hope nobody shoots a hole(s) in my blind...

I shot at one from my living room few years ago. Missed it.. EDIT: I stand corrected. I now recall 3 years ago I think it was toward the end of bow season. Looking out the window during lunch. A buck was about 10 yards from my window and stuck its tongue out at me. It was windy, a small amount of very very light snow was coming down and it was noon or 1.

Wow do I ever feel sorry for you guys who don't have one in the freezer.. Im thinking of my options Saturday and I think vagisil and FRESH tenderloins for breakfast are in order. har har har. IN all seriousness, looks shitty. Duck opener it rained all day. Literally. Non stop. And was windy. I think I will don my camo waders, throw on the camo raincoat and stuff some orange over that for the wet layer. The question is is it worth it or not. Not sure I ever shot deer in the wind, not sure I have even seen much in the wind.

Well... my deer also froze this past weekend. I took it to the processor after it hung 3 days. He was pissed at me. He said he was going to have to put it in front of the space heater and thaw it somehow and what a pain in the ass and why did I wait and don't do this next time. I was planning to process myself but it froze hide on so I paid someone to deal with it. Learned that I need to take the hide off when the temp gets down so low.

2017 HuntingNY Crossbow Harvest Thread
Al Bundy replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in CrossBow Hunting
My 6.. Taken last week. My hunting buddy and I did a quick scout and figured where to sit, where the deer were likely to come. We had a BIG boy on camera where I was sitting and hoped he came out. Instead, this 6 found itself at the end of my bolt. I watched the lighted knock fly through the air and saw it in the deer. Like a tracer when I replay it in my head. Amazing. I hit slightly high, which turned out to be a good thing. He dropped where I hit him. 33 yard shot, quartering away and very slightly on the edge of a dirt mound. My hunting buddy got a shot at the big boy 2 days later and missed! 30 yard shot from his climber and he shot over the top. He had buck fever. I was happy to hit this guy and go duck hunting the rest of the week. My freezer is only half full though. Other half has to get going!- 18 replies

Not sure how to attach other side up. The curse of holding your phone left handed apparently.

A bit unusual today. A few ducks flew very very early. Not much after legal. I did manage one merganser. Still great morning. Cold and bright but I was out and got some shooting.
-
Calm winds and clear skies. They flew late but fairly well. My decoys need some paint I think as most flaired. A pair of goldeneyes landed a bit out and luckily swam in. I dropped one when it flew away. My hunting buddy missed. Next was an absolutely beautiful sight. A flock of about 6 big black ducks flying quite a ways away. It was nice to see a total black silhouette against the skyline. I gave a call and turned them. In they came but landed 20 or so yards out of range. They swam away sadly and then took off. About it for the morning. I did see other birds flying though it’s not wide open. A few around. The sun came up bright and bounced off my gun, didn’t help things as I’m sure the ducks could see it. Great morning overall.

I’ll bite.. reported why?? nm.... got it..

Filled my xbow tag few days ago so went for ducks. this morning saw quite a few ducks flying. Many or most were blacks. 2 red heads, and others far away I couldn’t really see. Sadly my bag was zero. Took new shooter out this am. We had shots... I hit one first shot and it dropped down but kept flying. Didn’t make it off the water real far but disappeared into the fog. No way to give chase. Other blunder this morn I had a pair land well within range. We both pulled up and my gun went click. My partners gun had a jamming issue of some sort. Ended the day having fun but not getting anything. Oh well. Tomorrow morning....

pretty good stories! I kept repeating to myself they stay away from humans. I also screamed into the woods..”I’m going to reload my cross bow you bitches. You hear me”? They yelped a bit less for a while. I figured loud voice may scare them somewhat and it seeemd to. I also had to leave the deer to go get the truck. I was somewhat reluctant, but when I left I put my Xbow on the cavity. I also had my chair which I tried to cover the rest of the cavity with. I gave a bellow toward the woods and briskly walked to the truck; noting wet spots on the trek. A bit of a hike and some wet muddy places. I was alone and unable to drag the deer the distance so had to drive. Luckily the yotes left the deer alone and the truck made it. Whew!

Yesterday afternoon on stand I dropped a reasonable 6 point. I dragged it out of the woods and cleaned near a spot to put the guts. Before I started gutting I heard yotes howling, close. Real close. It got dark while I was gutting and I heard those things in the woods howling and howling. Somewhat disconcerting to hear this. Couldn’t have been more than 50 yards from me. Memorable experience... any rate got a nice 6 hanging.

Squirrels and chipmunks this morning. Cold, bright, and quiet. Not a deer to be heard or seen. No sign of rut to speak of yet. One new scrape last night is all.
-
Snowing on me right now.. great morning. 2 does within 10 yards. About an 8 point 50 yards through semi thick stuff. No shot. Tried grunting him in but he didn't react. Does just hanging out. No chase . Nothing.

She got one... but it was not in the field.

Out on stand two nights ago get a call about 15 min until sunset.... I was waiting on this call from my better half. She was on stand in a spot that consistently has doe in the afternoon watch. She shot at one but likely missed was her message to me. Unfortunate because we have been hitting the range with the xbows. Grabbed my helmet light and met her for the story. About a 30 yard shot but she thought further and used either one or two lines lower than she should have on the crosshairs. Whups. But.. I am not the hunter who says ok missed let’s go. She went to stand, pointed the angle and rough distance. The deer trotted a short distance after the shot, stood, then ran away. I love my helmet light for this. First year I used it and one of my better toys. It was close to dark so turned that thing on and started a search grid pattern type walk with my other hunting buddy. It took a while but I finally found a small clump of hair. “I got hair “ I bellowed. So.. she got a piece of it. Now I’m thinking oh shit as it ran away. Far.. into heavily posted thick snarly overgrowth of a field. So looking looking for blood. None. A small line of hair tufts is all. But no blood. Some hair had darkish color to it. So the hair ends and still no blood. Back to starting point to look for the bolt. I set her up with a pink Parker challenger, red hot bolts, and 4 blade grim reaper 100grain broadheads. These broadheads are mean mofo’s. That challenger throws the bolt respectfully and in her hands it’s capable hunting weapon. So. finding her bolt was a challenge. Today I am buying lighted capture knocks for this scenario. I eventually found the bolt though and it was clean. It was a needle in haystack but I found it. No blood. Ever. We theorized that she shot literally over the back and shaved a big chunk of hair on the way. we searched like hell for even the slightest drop of blood. Those reapers would have opened up anything it Came in contact with. Talk about close shave...

I hope to see him Saturday morning!

Welding??

That body looks LARGE to me?? That rack also seems pretty nice. Whats everyones guess on points??
-
Kind of what I am thinking. That is an awful thick rack I think for a youngish buck. Anyone know about atypical racks? Is it genetics? If so.. I have seen some wall mounts of a guy who hunts close by. HUGE racks and many atypical.
-
I am trying to decide if the close side has part of the rack snapped off or if that is the way it grew. Odd looking at any rate. Now file is attached...
