  1. For open water. I would like to set up a drift line and put a dozen or so on it. I see short lines and texas rig lines, neither of which seem to be what I want. Have not found one yet that is for a long string to reach out far. What specific product do you use?? Decoys are fairly new to me and I am still dialing it in. More often than not, birds flair. I got shooting this weekend and had a great time, but was not happy the way the birds passed up my spread over and over and over. I had a few Canada decoys out and one of the bills on one was twisted and looked weird to me. I wonder if this was enough to make ducks stay clear? Thanks!!
  2. He hunts with a gun. How this is possible I don't know as I also thought guns were not legal. Maybe he is police or military.
  3. Am I ever stoked. I found out today my soon to be nephew in law hunts wild boar in China. He said he would take me next time I visit. Wedding is supposed to be may June time. Looks like I'm going to it.... I don't know if they are Russian boar or what. They are not cute pink penned boar at least. Many details missing but I'm really excited. !!!
  4. Saturday morning temp was in the twenties with screaming south wind. Just about ideal duck hunting weather. Snow stopped by the time I left for waters edge which I was happy about. Got going late and birds were flying while setting up. Lots of birds... I threw out 8 or so decoys haphazardly while birds flew by. One black got real close and my hunting buddy dropped it. My lab did great and made a long swim out. She didn't seem to mind the weather one bit. Ended up Iimited on blacks and had a few mallards. Great opening morning. Chased snows after and found them in two different fields. First was posted like crazy and we couldn't go out. Shame as birds were easily shootable. Second field no posted signs. I knocked at the owners door and was met by a rather stern faced woman. Before I could finish my sentence she interrupted me and said in a somewhat loud voice....".NO. NEVER . NEVER EVER EVER NEVER NEVER." This is a quote and I had not even asked to hunt yet. I smiled and said have a very nice holiday season and left. Kind of wish I was not so polite. So... struck out for snows. This morning was a "bluebird" morning. Sun was out and no wind. Ducks flew some though and we got more blacks. Buddy got a band this morning. Banded 2013 about 15 miles away. More snows in posted fields also today. One more day left... hope for a good morning.
  5. All good ideas. Thanks. I may resort to paddling a canoe out if I shoot anything tomorrow. Maybe leave her on shore.
  6. The water going to be freezing. Me and my leaky waders. I tried on every wader brand in Field and stream and they all crotched the hell out of me. Ill hit bass pro and see if I can find one and a vest for my spoiled lab. Any vest recommendations?? Good shooting tomorrow everyone!!
  7. Could you trade in a face like this.... I didn't realize snows and canadas are open tomorrow also til my hunting buddy pointed it out. Going to sit for yotes for a while also if I can stand the weather. Going to be a great weekend.
  8. Forecast for about real feel of 15 degrees. 10 mph wind. My lab has never been hunting in this weather before. Others who hunt with their labs.. you put a vest on or do anything special???? Somewhat concerned about her. She spends majority of her time inside. Good luck to all those going out. Be safe. I want to see some reports.!!!
  9. At least one... Pretty good time if you can get into the birds.
  10. I lived on my boat 1 1/2 winters in NY. First winter thought I was going to die of pneumonia. I got a horrible cold/flu that finally went away only to come back a week later. That was not fun times. Second winter closed on my house by xmas that year and moved off ASAP.. I still have several friends in the marina that live aboard. Was it 3 years ago one day in January was about 70 degrees. a gang of us headed out on a buddys boat for the day. Great day on the water.!!
  11. Duck hunting!!! Then fairly soon snow geese. Then after that if I can get time turkey. Likely do a yote hunt or two in between. Hunting still going strong. Late season ducks is usually pretty good time of year.
  12. Just saw your post as I was on vacation. Lefty is what I want.. 7m08 is also what I want.. Sounds like you have "my" gun. Buffalo is a bit of a hike but I might take you up on that. I will be in Rochester end of January. Ill PM you if things work out for me to get there. THANKS THANKS THANKS.
  13. Thinking seriously about this gun, but having issues buying something at this price point without even seeing one. Anyone feel like doing me a HUGE favor.. letting me check out your rifle??? I will be in Albany county for XMAS, Cayuga county for late season ducks end of Dec./early January. Anyone????
  14. You have a bit of work planting a 4 year old apple tree. You very likely will need to trim it down to a fairly small tree. There is debate about planting a mature tree vs planting a whip in regards to how quickly fruit production happens. If you decide to buy a whip the place to order is called Schlabachs Nursery outside of Buffalo. Excellent prices and sturdy quality trees. I find the deer browse to their height and not much taller. Anything above this is usually left alone in my orchard. You need to keep the grass from growing around the tree. One year my mower went belly up and the orchard grass grew. Next spring half dozen of my trees some mature were girdled. Not cool.. You really need to put the time in.
  15. Why is this important? I shoot left handed with a right eye dominant. Anyone else out there shoot this way? I started reading and the "experts" on the internet say I should have been shooting right handed all this time. Also read I should not be closing one eye wing shooting for waterfowl. I usually end up knocking something out of the sky and am a pretty good shot. I wonder if my eyes got messed up recently. Left eye was really weak. What to do.
  16. I saw it at one of the shops I went to. I noted it looked quite nice. I didn't pick it up though. I have a bps 12. Been a fine gun for 35 years.
  17. Just realized Kimber is right hand only. Since I'm a southpaw, kimber is bottom of the list.
  18. I happened to look at the Tikka T3x and the safety really seemed "wrong". I had some issues moving it and it was LOUD. Moving that safety in the woods would not have gone unnoticed. I did like the bolt and action of the Tikka though. Very smooth and nice. Is your safety loud? While looking at the light weight rifles, I am very concerned with recoil. Not sure what to believe. I am reading as pointed out above perfectly balanced light rifles don't kick as much as one would think. I need to shoot something to see how my shoulder does though. NULA 20 in 7m 08 (if possible) would seem to fit the bill for me, as long as the claims of recoil are true and as long as I don't mind sleeping with the dog outside. I have read a very mixed bag about the Kimber Montanas and quality issues. What to do. This is a nice problem to have at least.
  19. Oh Man do those Melvin Forbes NULA rifles look great. Rattler I need to give you a whupping!! I cant stop thinking about them and researching. My wife caught me checking them out last night and saw the price tag. I would have been better off if she caught me looking at porn...
  20. I spent black Friday "shopping".. but I don't count looking at rifles shopping really. Kimber Hunter seems like an OK gun but it had a cheap feel to it, in my opinion. I saw a whole bunch of different rifles. Tikka was a very nice rifle. Also looked at Kimber Adirondack. We walked into the gun store and my wife, very surprisingly, pointed to three rifles she said she liked. I was like OK. Then almost immediately she realized what she said and was like OH no I don't really like it.. The price tag on the Adirondack sent her into sticker shock. Nice rifle though.
  21. I know a few and so far top on my list is Thompson dimension chambered in 7m 08. What's out there? I been looking but seems there are many the big box stores don't carry. Also thinking upgrade the wife's Savage axis while I'm at it. Weatherby compact seems a nice upgrade. It's time for santa to deliver... If the new rifle works out, going to be putting my 3 yr old Savage 30-06 up for sale. Not a thing wrong with it, I dropped a nice 6 last season.
  22. Good stuff guys. I am going to look into a recoil pad. Agree that if I can't hit a target at 100 yards I should stay home.. or find a new gun. Staying home is not an option. Maybe the pad and if not I'm going with a new higher end made in America rifle. Enough of our cash and jobs go elsewhere. My rotator cuff surgery turned out to be unnecessary. Luckily it's not my shooting or drawing shoulder though I think I'm done with a bow.
  23. Sadly my shoulders are not what they should be due to joint disease. I had surgery on the one and the other is not well either. I was trying to shoot my savage 30-06 last week and was shooting like garbage. Bad groupings, missing the target at 100 yards. I am pretty sure its due to the recoil and me knowing its gonna hurt like hell. I even shot reduced recoil and still had issue. I also put 2 180 grains through it and had issue lifting my arm fully for 3-4 days. So... I am looking at new rifles, thinking a 308 (maybe a 7m 08). For those who have shot both, the recoil is noticeably less than 30-06?????? I have shot a 308 only a few times when my shoulder was a little worse and it was hard to tell. I do have a reloader and have wavered back and fourth about trying my hand at home reloads. Never set it up but I have all I need. I just don't shoot enough to warrant it really and am not sure I could cut down recoil any more than the reduced recoil loads from Hornady. Comments are welcome..
  24. Wow are you all ever lucky. Every time I let my lab out when I am at deer camp I check her for ticks. And I am trying to remember checking her without pulling off a tick. I don't recall a time. Usually at least one. I also check myself and my wife and my hunting buddy to a lesser extent. I don't really enjoy checking him. Usually through the day I pull 3-4 off my body, just crawling along. Sunday morning I woke up with one on my left shoulder. Just had started to dig in a few hours before. Figured I missed one from the dog and it found its way to me. Every time I look at my lab I am very very happy she is a white lab. If she was chocolate or black no way I would see the ticks. They stick out like crazy on her. Edit: We have a once every three month pill we give the dog and it supposed to kill ticks after 12 hours of contact. I have not found once stuck to her yet since we started giving her this.
  25. Thought soaking was one way to do it. Lot of google info on soaking venison in a salty brine. Smells fine, just looks weird. We won't be soaking again next year though. This deer was was taken by hunting buddy Friday morning 815. Skinned out and quartered and fridged by 1130. Wish I wouldn't have soaked it but buddy insisted soak. Thanks for the replies.
