  1. Congrats, and great job on the recovery.
  2. I usually see 5-8 doe each time I go out.
  3. Sadly (and not to stereotype), but combine a pickup truck, alcohol and weapons, and anything is possible.
  4. Have you ever seen what pine tar does to the grip on a bat? I imagine the trees they rub would be a significant factor.
  5. Some people have absolutely ZERO common sense. (Of course, that is a given...look at the election results! LOL)
  6. Looks like the army coming (infantry and cavalry)!
  7. I live right next to the depot and have seen white deer in my backyard, but I have also seen them miles from here. They get out all the time and wander quite some distance.
  8. I don't know if you can do much about this season, but after the deer season, I would contact every coyote hunter you know and invite them to hunt the property HEAVILY. That may help things for next year. Good luck.
  9. I have nearly been stepped on by deer when sitting waiting for a turkey to come in. I think the decoys do have something to do with it. I have also seen deer and turkey together on more than one occasion this year.
  10. Came home last night with my son and a does was standing next to the lane about 20 feet from our mailbox. I stopped and rolled down the window. She didn't budge, so I told her to go get comfy and settle in until Saturday morning, then to meet me at my stand. At that, she bounded into the woods. My son tought it was pretty funny. I was serious!
  11. I think the elves only make cookies (and drink umbrella drinks). Dwarves would be the beer guys. Anyway, Burt, that is quite a dilemma. The funny thing is that ANYTHING can happen when hunting. We have all seen some pretty strange happenings. My guess is you will never really know what happened.
  12. That's not funny. Sometimes I think I have one of those on my back!
  13. Congrats to your son. Looks like he had a great teacher.
  14. Nyquil, whiskey....all the same. LOL
  15. It is still hunting. Actually, if they were everywhere, it wouldn't be hunting, it would be SELECTING.
  16. I, too, was among those who have had hunting molded into my being since I was small. As a young kid, I hunted in PA with my family (and, when I say family, I mean uncles and cousins and all). It was always a weeks long event. Sort of a late year family reunion. Beyond that, I love spending time in nature. I have done other things to get out (hiking, rock climbing, etc.), but Doc is right, there is something more to it. I think it is not unlike the guy who (despite the availability of speed boats) spends months or years working on a hand-crafted sailboat. It is about (in this day of television and electronics) reverting to skills which most have thrown aside for the convenience of modern day. I, on the other hand, want to prove to myself that I can still perform (if not master) the skills that my forefathers relied upon. I could use a rifle or shotgun, but I prefer to use a bow. It requires at least some skill on my part. Besides, I LOVE venison!
  17. The fenced area is only 50 feet by 50 feet. Why do they need a tracking chip?
  18. I hit one last year (looked like a solid hit) and tracked it to a brush line in the dark. The next morning, we picked up the trail with no problem. Plenty of blood and easy to follow. Ended up under some thick bushes a little over 100 yards from where I shot him. Big pool of blood where he had laid down. Never found the deer. No blood leaving the area and we spent parts of three days looking. (My friends are convinced my neighbor found him. He has repeatedly come onto my property to hunt as his house borders it. He has his own land, but mostly it is pasture.)
  19. Really nice buck. Nice tall rack! Congrats!
  20. After a long wait, I finally got my first bow kill and my second in the same day. I have posted the whole story in the Hunting Success Stories post linked below. http://huntingny.com/forums/index.php/topic,2068.msg23784/topicseen.html#new I don't know who was more excited, me or my son. We have a two seater stand and he was with me for the first kill. Have seen quite a few deer despite the wind. I still have three tags left. This could be my best season yet! I taken deeer with rifle, shotgun and (now) bow. Still need to take one with a muzzleloader!
  21. Actually, I got him Sunday evening. By the time I let him sit (to ensure he was dead) and we got him in to the house, it was dark. We skinned him and hung him. I didn't take the pics until the next day, so he is already caped (it is just the head and the hide in the pic).
  22. I feel for the guy, and it is certainly his right to post his own land, but you can't set policy based on one person. Should they allow the use of claymores for people who can't pull a trigger for some reason? Where to you draw the line? Don't get me wrong, I think if they are going to allow crossbows, they should be allowed in bow season (at least on some level).
  23. We have a four-point in our woods that is chasing after everything that moves. The girls don't seem so interested right now.
  24. Oh, forgot to mention, our resident four-point has been chasing the doe every chance he gets for a couple of days now.
