  1. Congrats and good luck. I did the same thing ten years ago, Oct 12th.
  2. Tim, that's what I was afraid of. I did contact him by email and he said that some properties are woods and others are 'lawns'. I don't want to hunt on a lawn.
  3. Maybe if Suffolk was divided into a few WMU's, and certain units required killing a few does before a buck?
  4. Waterman's idea sounds reasonable. I wonder if a proposal like this was ever made. My guess is no. Maybe because there's no actual organization that represents hunters. Maybe that's something that a forum like this could coordinate. I would think that towns would at least consider the idea as opposed to spending taxpayer dollars. I think, though that they could make a fair case that having sharpshooters 'hunting' over bait at night would eradicate the problem a whole lot more quickly than bowhunters could.
  5. The town of Sagaponack just announced that they've hired sharpshooters. I think that East Hampton Village is also planning to do that. Not sure if that's definite. There's a proposal from the Long Island Farm Bureau to use this method in other areas on the island. Not sure of the status of that proposal.
  6. Sounds like it could be either. I just wouldn't want to find out too late that I'd be hunting in someone's backyard.
  7. Curious if anyone is familiar with an outfitter named Bill Lester of Long Island Deer Hunting. The website advertises high success rates and almost guaranteed opportunities at pretty low prices and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with them.
  8. Orion is right. It's 3 and they do check. I hunt a lot out of point lookout and we get checked all the time. They also check to make sure you're shooting steel.
  9. I would think that you'd want to sight in using rests to assure consistency. Once you're sure that the gun is dead-on, then you would switch to practicing freehand.
  10. they make drier sheets that have a cover scent. i forget the brand, but i bought them a dicks and i've seen them in walmart.
  11. mbucks, are you on private land or public- if you don't mind me asking.
  12. I just bought my license and got two for 7j. If anybody needs one, let me know.
  13. I live down the road from Port Jeff. If there is any legal hunting land there, I've never heard of it.
  14. It'll never happen. And, if it did, it'd be on a small scale- maybe a lottery setup. Either way, I agree that it would be a complete circus.
  15. on the news last night, there was a report from a car wreck in Staten Island and there was a turkey right behind the reporter on a very busy road.
  16. Geno, I wanna find out where you live and put a tracking device on your car so I can find out where you hunt. I grew up on the Island and work out on the East End and have never been able to get access to hunting land. Congrats.
  17. Another on a long list of reasons to avoid the in-laws.
  18. In order to get one of these, did you have to apply and be denied? When I went to buy my license, I was told that they were not issuing doe permits anymore until Nov1, and that the store was temporarily unable to print licenses. So, I decided to try again another time and was never actually 'denied'. I'm assuming this means I'll have to wait til Nov1???

I didn't get picked last year and forgot to enter this year. Good luck.

Have you guys hunted there before? Did you have any luck?
  21. That sucks. Sorry. I've had the same thing happen to me on my own property.
  22. If you tell us about your lease in Louisiana, you might find someone interested in 'swapping' a hunt. Just a suggestion.
