  1. I have said it for a long time, the only way to make the woods safer is to put antlerless in its own season. This would make an individual visually ensure the "target" Has or doesn't have antlers and would make do away with shooting at movement. There is a reason why it is safer to hunt areas that do not have dmp's. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. I am honestly surprised by how many place luck so high on their list. I find it awesome how many different ways people hunt and prepare. One thing that hasn't been brought up but I feel is very important in my personal success and failures is mental attitude. I am arrogantly confident that I will kill a mature buck my way every year if I wasn't I don't think I would do it anymore. I have confidence in my skills that when I am ready I will put myself in a position to kill a mature buck in the big woods. This has led to some success and many failures because we all know what over confidence offend gets us. I play to my own tune when it comes to hunting. I have 400 acres of beautiful agriculture and swamps with oaks and apples that I rarely hunt that is in my backyard. I like the big woods and it's where my passion is. I could shoot a 110-120" buck every year on it and have for many years but it's not fun to me anymore. I don't run any trail cams and do very little preseason scouting and if I do it consists of getting in a stand with a few cold ones and a set of Binos before season. I rarely hunt the wind even during bow season, I hunt where I think deer will be and let what happens happen. I don't use any form of scent control at all, I think my hunting clothes were washed last year but I'm not sure and I know they haven't been washed this year. I shower with regular shampoo and soap. I do a lot of In season scouting up at my camp but I don't seriously hunt until I know it's time, usually around the 15th of November. My biggest enjoyment in hunting is killing a mature buck in the big woods on my terms Mano Y Mano. I don't like using calls or scents although I have, nothing against them I just prefer not to use them. When I can kill a mature buck on my terms I consider it a successful season. 3. In my area dmp's have been hard to get for the last 3 years. The biggest problem is the numbers are so low that the first buck a hunter sees that has 3 on a side is killed. The average yr and a half old buck in that area is a 5 or 6 pt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I am in a camp in the Catskill where there has been AR for 5 or so years. I have seen little to no difference. 15 years ago it was awesome hunting now it sucks. On our 400acres we haven't saw a difference, maybe another 5 years is what it needs down there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. The problem is your definition of it working is different than mine as well as many others. That is my whole argument against them. To me hunting is about enjoying the outdoors and enjoying the harvest. If the harvest is a spike and it makes you or anyone else happy, awesome! What I hate most about modern hunting is the fact that people seem ashamed of killing a small buck and the "he's not a monster but..." Crap that kills me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. So you are only concerned with it helping you in your area? So all your arguments about it helping herd quality are just to help pass your selfish agenda? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Everyone has brought up great points and many I have not thought of especially the "success differs per individual." To me a successful year is accomplishing my goal. Now everyone's goals are different but if you accomplish them year after year than I think we could all agree that would be successful. As for the luck thing yes once in a while you can get lucky but I'm a firm believer that you make your own luck. Moog had a great point as well with "capitalizing" on the chances we get. How many of us hear of the Giants that were missed or busted before the shot. I can't remember for sure but I think it was at a Hal Blood seminar when he said "killing a mature buck isn't hard it's putting yourself in the position to kill the big buck that's hard" I don't think a truer statement has ever been made about hunting. 8. They tried the cellphone thing in NC and it was revoked because to legally do it they would have to issue the phones with the tags. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. I don't see this ever happening in NY, states too big. How far would it be acceptable to have to haul a deer to the check station? If it's too far the now law abiding hunters might become the law breakers for convenience. If I shoot a deer in my back yard then have to put it in my truck and haul it 30 miles to a check station to turn around and haul it back home to butcher would make me consider not tagging it that's for sure. 10. I'll start with the background to my question. My cousin has owned the camp I hunt out of in the ADKS for 11 years and has never killed a deer up there. He has about the same amount of time to hunt as I do but just can't put it together. What do you guys think makes some hunter successful year after year and others not? Properties to hunt aside because we live in a state with a ton of quality state land so I don't buy the "my place sucks" argument. I have an uncle who killed a nice buck every year for about 10 years and 3 years ago the neighbor sold some land and changed crops and he hasn't killed a deer since, to me his problem is that he is failing to adapt and that the bucks are still there just not where they were. Myself I have never and will never consider myself a good hunter because I'm not. I move too fast still hunting and tracking and I can't sit for more than an hr in a stand. The only things that makes me a successful hunter is my stubbornness and my "grunt" mentality to keep going. So just out of curiosity what do you guys think makes certain hunters more successful than others? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  12. I don't get this mentality at all. So if a spike makes a 16 year old happy it's ok, if a spike makes an 80yr old happy it ok but if a spike makes a 30 year old happy it's a scrub buck and he's a crappy hunter? Once again who the F cares what others shoot, shoot what you want I'll shoot what I want and everyone is happy. Stop trying to push what you think is best on to everyone else. 13. Being a big fan of short light rifles and having a bunch of different chambering a I will say this about their recoil. I have found that light rifles don't kick as much as they jump and I think the jump is worse as far as flinching but I have never felt that the recoil hurt. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Jesus it took me a few minutes to wipe the drool of my screen, if it's a carbine I might need to change my underpants as well. Awesome score, although it's NIB I would bet a few dollars that the o ring is bad, it's a 2$ part and a five minute fix and even if you can't feel the forend rattle I would have it changed. 15. The fact of the matter is ethics boils down to 1 person and that's the one in the mirror. If you can look at yourself while brushing your teeth and shaving then it ethically ok. I have taken the same shot and would again tomorrow. Never did I or would I depend on Jesus or anyone else to help me as I know myself and my equipment are more than capable of doing the job at hand if I didn't I wouldn't do it. The thing that I find funny is how many people say it's unethical but think head on shots are fine, news flash with a powerful enough cartridge it's the exact same shot. That being said if I was sitting like Wolk was I wouldn't have taken that shot I would have gotten him to turn. Still hanging and tracking it is a different game all together. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. I'm totally against it and I haven't shot a year and a half old buck in over 15years. Shoot what makes you happy and quit worrying about what others do. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. Paper numbers are just that, a 110gn bullet at 1900fps is not going to be a good deer killer. If I only had 1 gun and it was a 30carbine I would use ball ammo because it would have the best chance for an exit hole. The couple people that I know who hunted with one used ball ammo for that reason as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Most think 357 is on the lower end of the power spectrum for deer and a 30carbine isn't in the same league as a 180gn 357 let alone a 44mag. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. With the right ammo it will be effective. The problem with a 30carbine is they don't do anything well, light bullets traveling at slow velocities don't make good killers. The actions are to short to use some of the awesome light 30 cal bullets. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. 1 thing I have learned on my first day back tin work after 22days off, I still hate work. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. 1800$ is a big chunk of change for a lot of people me included. I don't buy that someone stopped and offered 1800$ wrote the check and started hunting. I would be more upset that they felt they had to lie than to just say sorry they are paying 1800$. That tells me that he knows how much he screwed you. At the end of the day it's their land to do as they please and let's hope they call you for help and you can tell them it will be 1800$ and hang up, then drive by and honk. 23. I'm not sure yet I have it limited down to 3 builders and I'm going to call them Monday and ask a few final questions and make my decision. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. I got yelled at by my neighbor for hunting my property, "missed" a bunch of squirrels. It was a successful afternoon walk. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. I have been shooting a longbow for 3 years now and today when I was shooting I made the decision that next year is the year that I will hunt with one. I have shot it well for the last year and a half but didn't feel confident enough with it to make the switch for hunting and have always used the compound as a crutch. I sold my backup compound a week ago with plans of buying a new bow this winter but today I called my buddy who wanted to buy my main bow and asked him if he still wanted it and he came to pick it up a couple hrs ago. I will probably be in for a few deerless years but I'm ok with that. All this year I never felt into bow hunting like I always have and I know it's because I want more out of it. I hunted with a recurve for a couple years when I was a teenager and a bad shot that wounded a doe that I know a compound would have killed turned me off. I'm super excited and I'm going to be ordering a custom longbow next week. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
