Not just you, I’ve quit roosting birds for me. I’ll do it for others that have never shot one like I did for my girlfriend opening day. It’s boring and feels like cheating to me. I would say that after I learned how to set up on a roosted bird I’m way over a .500 batting average on a bird when I know what long he’s in the night before. I don’t want anyone to take it the wrong way because I have no problem with others doing it, it’s just not for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

The bird we were on flew to the other side of the property with the hens. We left and are trying a different spot. A bird gobbled way off at my crow call. We set up on the edge of my property as close to gobble as we can get. He hasn’t made a peep since but we are gonna hang out for a while playing the soft and sweet stuff. Got a guy with me this morning that’s never turkey hunted. He said all he cares about is hearing them gobble, well he’s got that covered because we have a bird 100 yards from us that’s probably gobbled 200 times already. The current setup sucks because of property lines but we’ll see. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
So here is how my morning went...should I change tomorrow?

Unless you can see what tree they fly into tonight sounds like you have a good setup and are in the middle of them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

This will go down as one of my all time favorite hunts. This Jake read the script perfectly. She was home showered and in bed by 7, now I’m out crawling around getting soaked! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk- 1449 replies

You said you must have gotten lucky. You shot slugs then said your turkey loads were dead on at 30. It’s not luck when you’re shooting a 30” pattern. If you’re off by a few inches either way it would be hard to tell and won’t matter. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If you’re changing chokes you’re changing point of aim “ie wasting time/money.” Put your target at 15ft, shoot light game loads. Dial the dot in so it’s 1.5” above the center of pattern. Back your target up to 40yds put in a turkey load and shoot, dial in center of patterns to point of aim. Been using an optic on turkey guns for 15+ years and this is the best method I’ve found. Don’t over think it, you’re shooting a pattern nothing needs to be or will be exact. I’ve watched guys shoot 2 boxes of shells trying to dial in on the “hot spots” of the pattern but the next shot will have a different “hot spot.” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I watched a coyote get a jake once when I was mowing hay and it’s a wonder there are any turkey for us to hunt. The Jake saw the dog started running dog caught up, Jake turned towards him and tried flapping his wings in defense coyote killed him. I was very surprised how little effort the Jake put into the escape. The coyote used more energy dragging him out of the field than he did killing him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Well, my daughter and I had an exciting morning and a couple cases of turkey fever!!!! First spot had 2 jakes come in right off the roost come in to 25yds I tell her to let the the one on the right have it and the worst flinch I’ve ever seen happened and resulted in a 20ga hole in the blind just below the window. She’s gets upset I don’t know if it was because she missed or because I couldn’t stop laughing. I get her calmed down and remind her that it’s the same as shooting targets. We head to spot number 2 and and have a 2yr old in our lap before we could get set up. I try to get her ready but wasn’t in time he passed us at 10yds and she never got a shot off. I tried calling him back but he had other plans. Spot 3 we got setup on a plowed corn field where I knew birds have been hanging out. First call and bird hammers about 100yds away over the hill. He takes about an hour working our way hangs up at 50yds and finally came charging in and I finally yelled to stop him but he was at about 15yds and she whiffed. We spent the afternoon shooting and I think she’s got her confidence back. She’s shot a lot this spring and winter and has been shooting very good but she’s gotta get over the fever. Oh well it was a fun day and the birds were very vocal she’s pretty down on herself but had a blast and can’t wait for the morning. Got a few more spots to try and connect in the morning. Congrats to those that got a bird and today and they’re mentors!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk- 1449 replies

Let’s hope hunting goes better than scouting for me. First night out doing a little scouting I hit 4 spots 2 private 2 public and I bumped birds in all 4 spots. Let’s hope my stealth game improves by Saturday! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

That is probably the most under utilized call for a madden turkey hunter! You can make sweet music with a push pin and anyone can use it. That’s the call I recommend for every beginner. There’s an old timer that lives in my town that hunts with a H&R single shot 20ga with a modified barrel and a push pin call and I don’t think he’s ever eaten a turkey tag in my life time. Absolutely, my buck last year was a marathon! The 13th of November is about the worst possible day to track! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Tracking! The old boys get tired and don’t put on any where near the miles in a day! I would rather track on dec 1st than nov 1st 500 to 1 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I would put something else in the gun besides your 1 heavy shot. I would hate to have a wounded bird get away because you only had 1 shell Leads killed a lot of birds, nothing to worry about there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If they bred in February I would agree, but in May there is so much food available everywhere a turkey lives that they don’t have to spend much time feeding to keep their stomachs full. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Most people guess, that’s why there’s a lot of 20+lb birds shot, much like 200lb deer. I use a 55lb digital fishing scale. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Brecknell_ElectroSamson_Scale/descpage-BRECK.html?from=gshop&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_eSojd_56AIVx4CfCh2S4wjdEAQYAiABEgIa0PD_BwE Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I see what you’re saying jay but I don’t think toms chase hens like you described. I think the reason why every one of my 20+lb birds have come in the last 2 weeks has a few variables, more feed, they’re usually the dominant bird so they’re henned up earlier in the year and they’re just harder to kill so the added foliage helps trick them. I’ve killed most and my biggest late season. I think most of that is based on higher grass and thicker undergrowth aids my preferred method of running and gunning. That being said I’ve killed a lot of birds on opening day but I spend a lot of time scouting and patterning the bird I’ll kill on opening day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Fiscally a 10R socially a 10L I want the government out of my life and out of my pockets. I don’t care what you do as long as you’re not harming others and not costing tax payers money. I don’t think any business or person should survive if it needs the government and it’s subsidies to do so. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I can’t believe Cuomo hasn’t made it mandatory then the fees will cost more than the groceries. Kind of like our current gas situation. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
