  1. The argument that "it's only a small loss of liberty" doesn't work for me. Never give an inch.
  2. I was able to get some firewood out of the woods today. If you don't spin the tires or let the logs dig in, there's a little crust on the mud. I really should have put something in the crock-pot this morning. I'm feeling frail.
  3. Get well soon Growie. There's an upper-respiratory thing going around that's been kicking a lot of peoples' butts. 'Tis the season.
  4. My grandmother did a side dish of potatoes au graten that was half horseradish. Sounds similar, and it was tasty. I think she just wanted us out of the house and on the tractors.
  5. Your options would have been beef-on-weck, or either sausage or meatballs from the pot of sauce. Stinky-feet Italian cheese or Miller's horseradish were the condiments available. They may have had mustard, but if someone asked for ketchup they'd get a spoonful of spaghetti sauce and a lecture. ;-]
  6. You're absolutely right about being quiet about it. It's a big part of the concealment. It's the only time I've ever mentioned it to an 'anti', and I'll never do it again.
  7. It was many years ago, loading the truck for a day at the range. Ammo - check Sandbags and rest - check Cleaning supplies - check Optics - check Lunch - check Guns - left 'em on the porch back home ;-]
  8. Happy birthday... and happy new year as well!
  9. The .17 HMR bullets will come apart at the slightest impact with even a leaf. The resulting dust doesn't travel very far. You're absolutely correct in your general statement, but it doesn't apply to a grain of rice moving at hypersonic speed through brush or tree tops.
  10. I had no need to carry at my family gathering. You're missing the point.
  11. Don't ignore the other flank of the attack: http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/California-Gun-Law-Seize-Guns-Without/2015/12/30/id/707588/ No-knock raids for removal of firearms from law-abiding citizens has essentially been given an okay in CA. The Republic will prevail in the end, but it's going to be a real chit-storm in the interim.
  12. They closed their doors about ten years ago after a nice family-owned run of about 40 years. Ken-Bailey area, and the neighborhood 'diversity' got to be too much. I lived around the corner and left at about the same time, but I still keep in touch with the Anacone family. Nice people. Hand-carved roast beef sandwich with the 'weck lightly dipped in au-jus, for about 3 bucks. I ate a lot of them in the 20 years that I was there.
  13. A 40 gr lead bullet will go a lot farther through the treetops/woods than a thin-jacketed .17 cal bullet. Except for the noise the .17 would be my go-to round for all small game.
  14. Sounds like a win for ya'. The only bus in my neighborhood is a school bus, and I don't think they'd pull my tool trailer to the jobsite for me.
  15. A healthy distrust of governmental authority is one of the founding principles of the US. Legislating against that distrust is a sure path to acceptance of tyranny.
  16. Costanzo's rolls, Miller's horseradish, beef-on-'weck at Anacone's...Sometimes I really miss Buffalo.
  17. An icon from the Harlem Globetrotters has passed away. He was 83 yo. A very funny and entertaining guy. And very generous with his time regarding community service work.Lots of memories from when I was a kid.
  18. For me it's part of getting dressed in the morning. It's no longer a conscious thought. I was the best man at their wedding 25 years ago, and I was probably armed standing at the altar with them.
  19. In short, it's a fear of freedom. The US represents individual freedom. Most of the world is scared to death of that.
  20. I suppose I should have kept my mouth shut. She's an annoyingly loud liberal who married into a pretty conservative family. Sometimes I just get tired of tap-dancing around her PC school-teacher sensitivities.
  21. I'm with Doc on this. I just don't miss being lumped up by my Model 37 every year.
