The average "drone" owner isn't likely to ever the develop the flying skills necessary to make it effective for hunting. Not to mention the skills required to translate aerial photography into an actual ground game. Technology has certainly made things easier than they were a decade ago, but it's not as easy as people think. I've been paid to fly model aircraft (drones) on several occasions involving agricultural research and/or crop reconnaissance for both Universities and businesses. A group of people in a command trailer would receive the down-link from my aircraft and tell me where they wanted me to put the aircraft. I was hired for my piloting skills, but it took a crew of people to take advantage of those skills, and an entirely different crew to make sense of the information that we gathered. Someone in NYS who knows their property well enough to actually do aerial surveillance doesn't need it for hunting purposes. The FAA has recently instituted a rule/law that all "drone" owners must register their aircraft and display the registration numbers on their aircraft. Law-abiding hobbyists are generally complying with this registration. I don't know if this legislation deals with hunting issues or not, but I'm guessing that if you find a crashed model on your property it won't have a registration number on it.

Civil War
philoshop replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I'd need a more specific description of what the "Civil War" might entail with regard to who's fighting whom. The "Revolution" has been going on for a few decades. -
Possibly the best band to ever come out of California, even though none of them were born there. Miami Vice was a pretty crappy tv show overall, but the episode "Smugglers Blues" was written around Glenn Frey's song of the same name, with him acting the main character from his song. It was nothing short of brilliant. Don Henley released a very emotional statement today about the loss of his friend: "He was like a brother to me; we were family, and like most families, there was some dysfunction. But, the bond we forged 45 years ago was never broken, even during the 14 years that the Eagles were dissolved. We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the same dream: to make our mark in the music industry -- and with perseverance, a deep love of music, our alliance with other great musicians and our manager, Irving Azoff, we built something that has lasted longer than anyone could have dreamed. But, Glenn was the one who started it all. He was the spark plug, the man with the plan. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn't quit. He was funny, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven. He loved his wife and kids more than anything. We are all in a state of shock, disbelief and profound sorrow. We brought our two-year 'History of the Eagles Tour' to a triumphant close at the end of July and now he is gone. I'm not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some."

Oregon Situation
philoshop replied to mike rossi's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
A big part of Representative Walden's point was that the Federal regulatory bureaucracy is simply unwilling to work with The People. His examples make that astoundingly clear with respect to his constituents in Oregon. The basic argument with this thread and with the 'Welfare Ranchers" thread is based on the assumption that the Federal Government bureaucracy knows what's best and that it can always be counted on to do the right thing. Representative Walden knows from first-hand experience that this is not the case. -

I'm very comfortable and confident with my .243. I'll admit that it's mostly about getting a new toy. ;-] -

http://www.c-span.org/video/?c4571012/rep-greg-walden-armed-standoff-oregon Some interesting insight into how the Federal bureaucracy handles situations that don't go their way, from a legislator who's been in the middle of it. Greg Walden is the US Representative for that area of Oregon. -

The countries you've mention don't allow them in. As a general rule they don't allow anyone in for anything but a short vacation, but they're pretty specific about IS types. Rule number one is: Keep your door locked.

I'm flippin' the coin right now between .308 and 7-08 as an upgrade to the .243. Something with a little more downrange punch than the varmint/furbearer rig but still in the short-action family. I have dies and an assortment of bullets for the .308, but the 7-08 intrigues me. Thoughts? Not trying to derail the thread here. More like keep it going. -
Nothing here right now, but I suspect it's coming.

Oregon Situation
philoshop replied to mike rossi's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The States came together to form a union. That Union needed a consolidated voice with regard to foreign affairs and they created a Federal Government with which to express that voice. They framed the Constitution to expressly limit the powers of that Federal Government to those that the States were willing to give away. Read that again. What the States were willing to give away. The crisis we see now is that many States are far too willing to cede their Rights to the Federal Government. In doing so they cede the Liberty of their constituents, The People, in the process. Far too many of The People are willing to go along. The People run the States, the States run the Federal Government. That's how it was laid out when the US was founded, but that basic concept has been turned entirely upside down over the last century. -
Not our president

I appreciate the apology Cruz put forth yesterday: "Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and [New York Gov.] Andrew Cuomo and [New York City Mayor] Bill de Blasio have all demanded an apology, and I'm happy to apologize," he said. "I apologize to the millions of New Yorkers who have been let down by the liberal politicians in that state." -

I would guess that most of the 44,000 "assault" rifles registered are either collectibles or competition guns. -

It's a difficult stigma to overcome. I do my best to inform people that there is a huge difference between NYC (and Albany) and the rest of the state. -

I spent 6 weeks building a barn for a friend just north of Lexington, KY a few years ago. We toured several distilleries on the weekends but kept going back to Buffalo Trace. Their Blanton's Reserve is one of my favorites and it's easy enough to find in many NY stores. Some of their high-end stuff like Pappy Van Winkle is unbelievably tasty, if you have the wallet for it. Basil Hayden's is another good one. Not sure who makes it, but it's a scotch-like flavor that I enjoy. Three fingers in a rocks glass with one small ice cube, and some pieces of quality dark chocolate to nibble on between sips. I have approximately 491k hours on me (56 yo). -

The one thing that's always bothered me about "political correctness" is that it does not represent my views. I tend to say what I mean, and if someone takes it as an offense that's their problem. -

I shipped a handful of worn out chainsaw chains to a 'smith last summer who makes knife blades with them. Chain loops make for some very interesting Damascus blades. This is not the guy I shipped them to, but it's an interesting site with some good pics. Mouse over the individual blades to get close-ups. Cool stuff! http://www.ironriverknifeworks.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=63 Let me know if your hobby heads in that direction. -

You've completely missed the point. You assume that a privately held US enterprise will 'sell you out" before the Federal Government will "sell you out". Some of you folks have an inordinate amount of faith in the US Federal Government. -

I didn't see the question. I was either thinking or typing. My apologies. This has to do with the Bundy Ranch incident, and is only pertinent as a sidebar in this discussion. The OP asked that it not be sidetracked. -
Nothing at the homestead, but the Tops parking lot 5 miles north was a slushy mess and the wind was howlin'. I bought a 12-pack to use as a counterweight against the wind getting back across the parking lot to the truck.
