Government "seizes" more land
philoshop replied to Uptown Redneck's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
This is a lively section of the site, and I find it important to get a feel for what other NY hunters and sportsmen think about issues other than hunting and the outdoors. It's a much more local pulse-taking for me, and a break from the reading and writing I do at the national and international politically-focused web sites. The name-calling and personal attacks here seem to come from a very small number of those participating in otherwise intelligent discussions. One member recently admitted that he was posting only to irritate and inflame. That kind of behavior does not encourage intelligent discourse. We are free to disagree, but I want to know why we disagree. My neighbor's three year old son can get away with simply calling me a poopy-head, but I expect a bit more from a thinking adult. We're in the midst of the most game-changing and controversial presidential election in recent memory. Everything is politically charged right now and ignoring that fact won't make it go away. The issues are either discussed intelligently, right now, or "We The People" will have surrendered our voice. Best, Mark -
I was fortunate to have a very good mentor right from the start as far as safety and the basics, but I picked up the advanced accuracy and fine-tuning info on my own. Most of reloading is just focus and paying attention.

-2* here and even with the wind whipping straight out of the north, Seneca Lake is steaming like a hot tub.

Canada banning wood stoves

My comment was about peoples' personal safety when burning wood in their own homes. -

People who don't know how to burn wood for heat (or ambiance) shouldn't do so until they learn how to do it without endangering themselves. It requires a bit of knowledge and personal responsibility, and it's certainly not for everyone. -
The pics are great, but I'm happy just reading about the dishes, experiments, and recipes without the pics. FWIW, the many books I read don't normally have pictures in them either. ;-] Thanks to everyone for their input.

Reloading becomes a hobby in and of itself. Whether that's good or bad for you, I can't make that call. It costs a few bucks to get into it, but if you shoot on a regular basis or if you just enjoy tinkering to make a firearm the best that it can be it's well worth it. FWIW I started reloading in 1979 and I've never regretted it.

That indecisive moment: Do I shoot it, or get a picture of me standing next to it. :-]

Very nice Wooly! Glad to see you enjoying your new setup.

I haven't seen the story, but why not? A good friend from high school grabbed a backpack and a cheap bicycle in 1977 and headed out to see a girl in Minnesota. The girl thing didn't work out for him but he ended up spending 20 years circling the globe three times on a bicycle. He doesn't regret any of it.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. -
Medium post-type reticle with a 2 moa dot. Trajectory and windage factors are written on a piece of paper glued to the inside of the flip-up cap.

Most of what passes for news today is actually opinion. You have to work hard to find factual information. One of the headlines today was about the president wanting to tax US oil companies $10 per barrel in order to fund "clean transportation". I've read through a dozen different 'news' articles from both left and right sources to find factual information. The president claims that if you like your healthcare plan this is a tax to be paid by the oil companies. Hooray, tax those big oil companies. That the oil companies will simply and logically pass this tax burden on to their customers doesn't seem to matter. 25 cents/gallon at the pump is what it will cost consumers, and there is no concrete information about where this money will go or what it will actually be used for. This is the kind of sh*t we're going to see for the next 350 days.

They were originally charged with arson. The Federal prosecutor later charged them with domestic terrorism and sent them back to jail. -

https://wlj.net/print-article-11862-print.html This was written 5 months before the Malheur Refuge incident. I have no information regarding the "slaughtering of a herd of deer". The Federal prosecutor charged them with an act of domestic terrorism because that was the most serious crime they could come up with. The Federal government wanted them off that land, and it looks like they'll achieve that goal. They're using the same tactics all over the country. -

If Mr. Obama was even half as intelligent as he is evil, I might consider that it's not an unintended consequence. He sure is making a lot of money for the folks holding stocks in gun companies. ;-] My only stocks are the ones attached to the guns I buy. -

Cliven Bundy offered several times to pay the Federal government the money he owed them. Every time he did so the BLM would raise the financial bar, essentially reneging on their contract. His only recourse was to hire attorneys and present his case to the BLM's own court of dispute, or whatever they call it, which would of course uphold the BLM's position. He got tired of financially supporting both sides in the Federal government's case against him, out-of-pocket on one side and his taxes on the other. The BLM moved in to seize the property and met with resistance. It's not about 'rancher welfare'. The Hammonds in Oregon were sentenced for an "act of domestic terrorism". They set fire to scrub brush in an effort to create a fire-break and keep wildfires off their ranch. Their fire got a little out of control and burned 140 acres, some of which was considered Federal land. They were sentenced to 5 years in prison. In the same time period, the BLM intentionally burned several thousand acres of private property to create the same kinds of fire-breaks. Nobody from the Federal government is being held responsible for that. If this was happening in the Adirondacks or the Finger Lakes, I suspect some of the views would be different. -
I grew up helping on my grandparents' farm. During the busy season it was three hots and a cot, and complaining was not tolerated. The only excuse for missing a "family" meal was if you were out hunting for the next family meal. I still do Sunday lunch with my folks and a couple other family members. I'm old enough to know that it's a limited engagement, and I treasure the experience.

2.5 Million Gun Background Checks in January Set Record for 9th Month in Row http://www.newsmax.com/Newsfront/gun-background-checks-surge/2016/02/03/id/712614/ Interesting to so clearly see the law of unintended consequences play out over the last 4 years.

Article 4, Section 3, Clause 2. 2: The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any particular State. Once the land is established as a State within the Union, it is no longer considered a "...Territory or other Property belonging to the United States..." 'The United States' does not own the individual States.
