I agree, better communication would benefit everyone. Honestly never really felt like political bents was were overly interjected into the topics of deer management. However no doubt one has to be aware of political impacts on issues. At least in the dealings I have had with upstate politicians of both parties I have always felt that hunting was pretty well received as they understood it was very much part of the constituent base.

Nothing good comes from the constant posting of the political tripe on here. All it does and all it’s designed to do is cause discord. Unfortunately it’s not as easy as don’t look at the section it’s posted in. If your on a mobile platform it’s going to show up in the your feed and you can’t filter it unless you mark it read, and there after every time a comment is posted it recirculated back into the feed. Best this this any hunting related forum can do is not allow it.

Absolutely. Generally their responses are a cordial reminder that have to manage the herd for many different stake holders, and hunter satisfaction is just one of them. They also generally state that if enough hunters clamor for change they can then justify changes in policy. AR in region 3 and 4 were a good example of that, as it illustrated a change in direction. The one common theme that has resonated with me, more so in conversations verse email correspondence is the glaring lack of hunter participation or involvement during comment periods, surveys and just in general. It’s painfully obvious to me that the majority don’t give a shit enough to advocate for the resource. Hence the reason that if you read the DEC deer plan it’s much of the status quo.

Maybe in some areas however around here the pressure while it ebbs and flows is pretty well sustained though out the season. That sustained pressure for a long season causes deer to disperse into the ample areas with no hunting at all. And with increasing urbanization of this state those areas are becoming more prevalent. That is a sure way to have crap deer hunting and hunter satisfaction. Furthermore if what your saying is true then your making a case for condensed season. If you look at other states you can see they kill just as many if not more deer per square mile then us and do it a shorter amount of time. Letting deer get back into a natural pattern that allows them to thrive. We have almost double the amount of hunters per square mile then many other states and yet on avg they have shorter seasons.
-
I say this in all sincerity. I send the DEC and my elected officials my thoughts on this matter often. Any comment period for any germane issue that comes up I give my feed back. I participated in person , for example during comment periods on our AR polite program. That is just one example. At least yearly I email my thoughts and concerns to Basil Seggios and James Farquhar among others. I am sure they are as sick of hearing from me as I am sick of contacting them.

I am saying this a gentle as possible. Punctuation is your friend. I would love to respond to you because I do believe that your interested in having a genuine discussion, however I can’t decipher a 50 word run on sentence.

We have the second or third highest hunter density’s in the county, it doesn’t take a Rhodes scholar to see having a 6 week rifle season in half the state and 4 week rifle season in the other half isn’t a path to having a well balanced deer herd.

Got ya !! BO hoo We can’t , it too hard…. Bet that applies to more then deer hunting for you. Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out while your crying.

The sad thing about all the “brown is down” “happy with any buck” “ can’t eat the horns” “shoot what makes you happy “ Types is how freaking intellectually dishonest you all are. Really it’s freaking laughable.

I Don’t wait around for NY or anyone else to help me reach my goals, I am happy to go achieve them on my own. And you’d surprised what my goals are consider that I don’t announce them. I often wonder how many of those “people happy to kill 1.5 year old bucks “ would pass the chance up of shooting a 3.5 or older buck and hold out for that 1.5 year …after all it their choice? All you are doing is articulating the continued justification of bad management and as by product a culture that celebrates it. Thankfully more and more hunters have educated themselves, seen what is possible and don’t settle for status quo when it sucks.
-
I already hunt more in the Midwest then NY. And quite frankly if you weren’t ignorant you’d realize that states with better management provide more opportunities for all hunters to chose what they want to harvest.

NYs season structure, and lengths suck. Western NY from 81 west could be a top shelf hunting state with the implementation of correct season structures and lengths. The rest of NY would never be better then just average, however that would way better what it is now. 70% of our state wide buck take is 1.5 and 2.5 year old deer and we have an ignorant hunting culture that celebrates that as a good thing. The only thing that is worse the NYS DEC miss management is the ignorance of our hunting culture that it supports. They are too narrow minded to understand that we can do better, and better would equate to more opportunity as well as quality.

I wouldn’t own a GM vehicle if they gave it me for free. Biggest hunks of shit you can buy

My wife has Highlander hybrid, came off an x3 and before that a Honda Pilot and then went to the Toyota. So far she likes it a lot, the drive the interior the features. It’s pretty user friendly and it’s been very reliable so far. We had it for a recall and they gave her a loner Rav 4, 2021 I think ..it only had few hundred miles on it and it was nice vehicle, I was surprised at the room and creature comforts in the trim level. It drove just as nice as the highlander, with slightly less get up and go. As for the hybrid, for me it took a bit getting used to however it does drive nice. Gas mileage she averages about 27 ish…, I have no idea if that is good or not compared to a non hybrid as mileage really isn’t on my radar. Personally I wanted her to get Lexus GX but she didn’t anything that big. One thing I know is from a reliable standpoint your hard pressed to do better then Toyota or Honda.

I think it does. For example I have friend that hunts in a group in the park, there maybe 10-12 rotating in an out. Someone is hunting most days of the seasons. Between them all they may kill two or three bucks, mostly mature I might add. Their favorite time is the late MZ season because of the either sex tags. You better believe they fill a bunch of them. This is in a zone that has zero DMPs. Tell me how it makes sense to allow antlerless harvest during the mz loader season in an area that they want no doe killed. I am sure his group isn’t alone, and if your look at the yearly take in DMU with no DMP you will see substantial harvest of does listed. It’s like saying only 5k or 8k bucks a year are killed on a second tag. Why is that of no consequence? Obviously it’s a consequence to you. Look at the dissatisfaction you have with your property and area? These things matter. A lot of little things add up to create the hunting culture and environment in the state.

The gun season is way too long in the southern zone and insanely too long in the Northen zone. A two buck limit is nuts especially considering that 7 out of ten bucks in the state killed are 1.5 and 2.5 years old. But by all means carry on like good little worker drones doing the same thing and getting the same results. Brown is down, can’t eat the horns, I don’t kill him my neighbor will.

Your right i was thinking of the Argos. I bought a set of Cronus for my son to fool with and getting mixed up between the two. I looked though the Argos a bit was surprised at the price they carry. If I was on a short budget that’s what I would consider. I would be remiss if did advise someone to save up a bit and start looking at glass in the 1k retail range as I think that’s were you see some value for entry level binoculars
-
Call up Doug at Camera land NY and get a set Athlon Cronus.
-
Your clueless as usual. One out of four deer killed state wide was killed during the archery season. When you compare how many archery permits were sold compared to regular big game licenses anyone with a shred of cognition can conclude its efficacy.
-
The regular season in my area is still a bit of zoo, still way too many hunters per square mile for way to long of a season.

The argument from the status quo side is that we used to get an F now we get a D minus….so we should be happy. The other side of the isle says although we have improved it’s still not acceptable and that we should working to improve even more. The biggest obstacle we face in NY is a culture of ignorance in our ranks. You see this example clearly when it’s articulated as “ this is NY, that won’t work here”. Asking and expecting that changes in behavior and attitudes and goals to come from within is only going so far when hunters cling to that ignorance. We need to look at implementing change structurally from a regulatory stand point that will then carry over to hunters behaviors and actions. We absolutely can do better in NY, we just have to want to.
-
In 2020 statewide 78% of the bucks harvested in NY were 1.5 and 2.5. Quite frankly if you think that’s a good thing your either misinformed or ignorant. https://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/2020deerrpt.pdf

How is a shorter more condensed gun season that isn’t in the peak of the rut a program? What are you taking about? You have 15.1 hunters per square mile, the second highest density in the county and we have a gun season in the southern zone that is over 4 weeks long between the rifle and Muzzle loader Season, with the first two weeks being in the rut. In norther zone that is six weeks long between muzzleloader and rifle season, all in the rut. Pure idiocy in deer management.
