Live From The Woods 2019 Turkey Edition
GreenDrake replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Turkey Hunting
LOVE the Model 11s. I collect Broening A5’s but own several Midel 11s. My grandfather bought his in 1937 for $85. My 90 yr old Uncle uses it to date. His first and only shotgun. I believe yours is a 11A...safety in front of the trigger. One of Mine has a 32 inch solid rib full choke barrel. Its a tank!! -
Yes. We pick them from farm fields before thry are plowed or cut. Pick them before they flower or else they are bitter. Saute with onions, garlic, sslt and pepper. Most amazing greens and side dish to venison and fish.

Wife and I did our first annual Dandelion pick today. Picked 12 big bushels and then ckeaned...washed....blanched...and are draining outside in the garage. Ended up with 26 softball sized batches. One more picking before they flower and we are good for the year. Of course we had to taste test them for dinner just now.

Winchester Silver Tips or Federal Premium. Stopped handloading years ago once I started shooting either of these.
-
Got 13 today in a WICKED wind. Got there late. If i was earlier I could have probably done very well

The owner is one of my best friends. He is out of town until April 1. He will check his mail a couple times a week and get back to you. The gun shop...rifle range and clays are still open.

Hunting Crows In The Woods?
GreenDrake replied to DirtTime's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Im far from an expert but i do hunt them heavily theclast 8 or so years. Have killed close to 300 this winter. The problem with calling in the woods is that they will remain too high to kill many. I set up in brushy apple thickets snd such for good cover. Put some dekes as high up in the trees as you can. Concealment is foremost. When they come in over that brush they are right in the kill zone. I put one deke on a 15 foot extension pole. Works great!! -
Slow morning. The big roosts are breaking up. Got 6 with the new A5. Will try the big dairy tomorrow as there was a fair number dropping in there late morning. Season is almost over!!
-
Killed 24 this morning. Then headed over to the pigeon farm but they were scarce.
-
Now why would you want to be prepared and not scramble the night before opening day trying to find your equipment like I do? Isn’t that more fun??
-
Have 6 of these spread out over 100 acres. My nephew and I hunt exclusively out of them now. Wife joins us nearly ever hunt and really enjoys the experience.
-
Got 22 in the HIGH winds. Tough shooting. Had to really adjust the lead.
-
18 this morning Tough targets in the wind and had to adjust lead. The walk out and in was brutal. The ebtire field was a sheet of ice. Now out to chase down some pigeons

New Video - The Partner

Very nice. Little cranial evacuation on that second one!!!! -
Ty. Pigeons were slim today. They are spread out over various farms and not at our main winter farm. We killed 6.
-
18 this morning in a new spot. Will know better where to set up next time. Off to chase pigeons now.
-
Got out in the HIGH WIND and snow this morning. Killed 22. Not a lot of birds this morning but the ones that were around came in low through low and screaming through the snow . Going to check out the pigeons when the wind dies down in a little while.
-
Slower shoot this morning. Only got 33. They were going right to grain bins instead of our decoy spread. Farmer wants us to set up by the bins next time. What a shame!!!!
-
You REALLY know she loves you when you open your gun case and find this.....
-
You know your wife loves you whrn you open your decoy bag and find this....

Crows are incredibly smart and often send me home talking to myself. If you do not conceal yourself well, then forget about even trying. You can have the best calls and decoys money can buy but if they see you or something they do not like, its game over. Download the documentary "The Secret Life of Crows". It will give you a whole new perspective of what we are dealing with.

The hardest thing to do is just pick one bird out and shoot him before moving to the second target. Once you start flock shooting it ruins your shooting style for good. The beauty of pigeons is that after the first wave of shooting, they will often circle and come back or go to a silo or other part of the field and come right back to your decoys. We had a flock of about 100 birds come in at once last week and my poor brother in law never fired a shot because he didn't know which one to shoot at first. I LOVE those steady 3 and 4 pigeon groups. Oftentimes you can get them all.
-
If you are going to be at least a little bit serious about it get 2 mojo pigeons and a half dozen full body decoys. They come right in and try to land in the set. Having 30 birds descend at once gets your blood pumping. Cheap Walmart Winchester or Federal 1 1/8 oz 7.5 and you are good to go. I now have 4 mojos...8 Flock Flickers...12 sillosock decoys..a rotary carousel....2 flappers...and. Dozen Soar No More full bodies...im sick in the head...my wife thinks ive totally lost it (though she is the one who orders two of this and three of that). As it is a 12 month a year hobby with no limits and no rules...you get a lot of enjoyment for the initial investment. Try to fnd a dairy with silage bunkers this time of year. In summer find a fresh cut eheat or rye field. You can have 2-3 hours of solid shooting every morning.

Good shoot today in the snow. Birds decoyed fairly well. We managed 75 in a couple hours.

When Do You Call It Too Cold To Hunt Small Game?
GreenDrake replied to DirtTime's topic in General Hunting
Was 6 degrees when I set out the dekes for crows this morning
