  1. Airdale where do you live? My dad, who would have been 90 this year, used a savage 720 16 ga since he was 20 yrs old. Over the years we collected Browning auto 5’s. I bought him 3 sweet 16’s but he wouldn’t use anything else. It has the smoothest action of anybof the 30 auto 5’s we have. I still carry it at least once a year. Usually on his birthday.
  2. Anyone going out for yhe last hurrah tomorrow? I hope to sneak one last morning in before starting on pigeons. Just got first dozen of Soar no More pigeon dekes in. Other dozen on the way. Mojos should be here Tuesday. I cant wait for that!!!
  3. Airdale..i have its older brother in 12. The prior owner wouldn’t sell me the 20 too. It is now my crow gun and it handles wonderfully. I have a falconette 20 o/u that is a great little grouse gun. I rarely use any of my dozens of 12s and 20s anymore as I simply cannot resist taking out my 16s.
  4. Pigeons set to decoys very well. This will be my first year really targeting them. My good friends go regularly and shot over a hundred twice last summer.
  5. Nice shooting!! Went out yesterday to a spot I haven’t hunted in a month. It was slow. Birds are all dried up. Killed 5. Do you still have a lot of flight birds? I will try to get out Saturday for the season finale for me. Gearing up for pigeons now. I just ordered 2 dozen soar no more pigeons...2 mojo pigeons...and a pack of flock flickers. Got permission to shoot 6 big dairys. Should keep me busy for a couple months.
  6. Perhaps we need to legislate violent video games and put restrictions on Hollywood and the media which does nothing than promote killing and sensationalize catastrophes that the psychos thrive on. That being said, reasonable gun laws are certainly necessary.
  7. Well my big plan Last Sunday was actually quite funny. I have been hunting a particular farm with success this winter but the walk has been brutal with the snow. Hunting around the silage bunkers has been good but hard to hide. So when I left last hunt I saw a small 3 sided concrete bunker of sort on the opposite side from where I have been hunting. BINGO. Built in ground blind on tve side the crows come from. So bright and early I head out. Get to the bunker and it’s perfect. 5 feet tall. 4 feet wide. I set the decoy spread. Hide the foxpro and ebter the blind. Im getting settled...swining around to make sure I can shoot. Sm happy as a clamb..and Kasplash!!! I break through ice and up comes bubbling the most disgusting sludge in the world. I was stsnding in the damned bunker drainage catch basin luckily I got out when it was just above my ankles but still got the pants. It was worse thsn liquid manure. I did hide behind it for a while snd killed a dozen bf the smell made me pack it in. The drive home in my “new” Avalanche was fun. Windows down in 18 degree weather in my undies. God love my wife. She had the wash machine empty and waiting. I thought I was smart... If I could have seen my own face when I broke through...it had to be priceless.
  8. Not at all. First, you do not know what horrible ailments my dear family members have suffered so please do not assume I am immune from the pains of illness. My statement was directed only to his atheism. But I do wonder...did Mr. Hawking ever wonder if it was divine intervention that allowed him to live so long and be productive through his horrible illness? Certainly it was not physics that saved him. I am FAR ftom a bible thumper; however, I take great offense to scholars that make believers feel as if we are gullible morons.
  9. It is no more offensive to him personally as it is to me personally when “ briiliant” minds such as the departed treat believers like myself as Living a fairy tales. Furthermore, as the departed did not believe in an afterlife, he most likely wouldn’t be offended by being treated like the remnants of a petrie dish after an experiment.
  10. Good shoot this morning. 24 killed. If I could have been able to get into the hedgerow to hide it would have been a great shoot. The snow was just too deep. I had to try to hide behind a berm but most of the birds busted me. Nice low fliers in the wind too. Tomorrow is another day!!!!
  11. Great shooting!!! I too am a crow hunting addict. I was hoping to get out this weekend but the snow will keep me away. My best morning this winter was 32 killed. I am hunting alone this year as my nephew and hunting partner is on his first year of law school at SU. (I remember that dreadful year myself) Aside from upland hunting with my setters, nothing compares to that first distant crow call as the sun is coming up. I may be able to help out a large dairy farmer close by with his pigeon problem this weekend!!
  12. It is also a shock collar and she is very sensitive to the neck. On the lowest setting she goes ballistic is you need to use it. So the alternative is around the waist. Also that particular unit is a bit cumbersome around the neck. She is only 27 lbs.
  13. Fernco all the way. Made for this purpose and their flexibility comes in handy. Mine have held up like new going on 20 years.
  14. Got out yesterday to new spot. Not in the flyway but was able to manage 15. Moved this morning on the edge of the flyway and got a dozen before the winds blew me out. Not the numbers expected but still a couple of fun hunts.
  15. Going to hit a new area in the morning. Large dairy farm being bombarded by feeding crows in the morning. Clouds of pigeons flying around while scouting it this afternoon. Farmer wants every bird dead as they have been raising heck with his feed. Looking for my first 50 crow day. We shall see.
  16. For the sheer diversity of terrain and hunting style opportunities, from mountains to large Agriculture, we have it very well here in New York.
  17. Has anyone been out after the black bandits? I have been too busy to get out. Maybe this afternoon.
  18. I do not intend to offend anyone by my position. I am certain that there are many 12 year olds that are wuite capable. I am also certain that most of the adults are more than capable to accompany and mentor thrir children. However, at 12 years old and not properly mentored and supervised is a disaster I am not comfortable sharing the woods with. We all waited until the proper age. We did not wuit the sport because we had to be spectators for a couple of years. Sometimes having to wait it out and learn by watching instead of doing is not a bad thing.
  19. Great shooting!! I haven’t been after them in 3 weeks. Hopefully this weekend I can get out. Last shoot was able to kill 30. I am hoping for one 50 bird day this season.
  20. My personal opinion is that a child matures quite a bit between 12 and 14 and that they themselves have learned more self-control and discipline which may avert a dangerous situation. I recognize not every child, or adult for that matter, should be judged by their age; however, I wiuldybe more comfortable in the big game woods without 12 yr olds shooting rifles.
  21. Nothing beats the beaty of a bird dog puppy!! Good look with it.
  22. I have the same addiction!! I think I am up to 18 belgians...most of which are sweet 16s. My 16 ga fetish carries on into Citoris...savage 720....Remington Mod 11 to name a few. NOTHING compares to the feel of a Belgian Sweet 16...though my light 20’s are nice too. Something about those purple shells brings fond memories of my dad pheasant hunting with his 720
