  1. Sorry Jim didn't mean to hijack your thread. I am sure in some areas scent matters. It is a proven fact that the human body produces scent every second so trying to hide or cover it up is usless. Deer use smell as a means to stay alive every day I am sure no matter what we do they can smell us. As long as they do not connect our orders or sounds with danger they ignore it for the most part. Ever hear people tell stories of being in the woods cutting wood and having deer walk right by or start eating branches of downed trees 10 yards from the guy. Sometimes I think we scare more by sneaking through the woods really quiet with little sent then we do just walking and watching. A person sneaking around looks more dangerous then one just walking through, or moving fast. the deer will just lay there till you pass through unless u step on them. when I was younger there was an area of state land near by that we would push a couple times a year. some times we would get there and 8 or 10 guys would be coming out. The would tell us no use we j u st pushed the whole thing and saw nothing. there were 3 of us 1 would stand point and 2 would walk. Slow walk stopping every few steps. Deer never ran just got up and moved right to where we wanted them. We always got deer there. Thone guys were fast and loud we were slow and sneaky.
  2. Cool didn't know that. I might just get one. I always get the hot hands for hunting but Never use them as I do not get cold very often . I am one who likes the cold . colder the better. The kids end up using mine every year. Do you remember the kidney belts that they had for the fuel warmers. wrapped around you and had 2 pockets for warmers the we're over the kiddneys. My gramps and dad loved those things.
  3. I'm in my hunting woods all the time on foot or with wheeler or ranger. the deer hear, smell, and see me enough they ne b error give a second thought. My father can not get around good anymore so he drives ranger right to the door of his blind.Always sees deer and always gets a buck. One time we left wheeler in woods when came back for it a big 9 point was liking the seat. too bad it wasn't season
  4. Yep and boy would it itch. Never used any warmers while out playing but kept me warm hunting. The stick had sticks kind of like charcoal you lit one or both ends and placed stick in tin box the size of a wallet that clipped shut. The box was covered with the same red felt as the bag for fuel warmers. It had a small hole in each end to allow air flow. If u lit one end of stick it would get a little warm and last about 6 hours .Both ends got very warm to some times very hot. Would only last about 2 hours with both ends lit. actually I still have 2 of them and a pack of sticks. Might fire them up for old times sake.
  5. That smell is one of my favorite from my childhood. It brings back so many memmories .As you said that smell never leaves you. My gramps is gone but that warmer still lays on the shelf of our cabin right where he always put it. Did you ever have one of the fuel stick warmers. I had 4 of them they worked great too. Still had an oder but not as strong. If you lit both ends of the stick they would get so hot you had to set them on a stump to cool off.
  6. No it doesn't . I've gotten pics of big bucks within 5 minutes of putting cam on scrape. Think of the state record non typical and typical. Did they have camo? scent loc? cover scents?how about lure or doe urine scent? Heck I bet they didn't even worry about wind direction. All they had was a gun and red plaid pants and coat. Hon about those time hand warmers they had to fill with fuel. My grandfather had one ,you could smell that thing 100 yards away. Never stopped him or anyone else who had them from getting deer. Heck I and I would bet many others have had deer in close and even gotten on while smokeing. One of my best bow killed bucks was taken when I had a smoke in my hand.
  7. Mine is fine. If you find something where I called a bow hunter elitist, go back a few posts before that and you will find it was in reference to a bow hunter already using it. Or one stated how you needed special skills and dedication to be a bow hunter. In fact my memory is so good I can remember not even being in this till you opened your yap and brought me in.
  8. Might want to go Chech where and when I have used that term.I do not call now hunters elitist anything except cry babies. The only time I use that term is in response to a bow hunter already using. I have never said it other then repeating of quoting one of you. So leave me out of your little giddy fit.
  9. Why? I and others I know have taken quite a few in the middle of standing corn
  10. When traveling the roads I see less and less cars parked with hunters in the woods during gun. I see more and more during bow.last weekend from Arcade to Portageville I saw 23 cars parked in spots I know they were hunting.. Come gun season I will be lucky to see 5 in that trip.
  11. Just to show how fast things can blow up. I just confirmed this was a joke started by his friends this morning and has gone crazy.
  12. Can't bring up the link but this same photo is all over with other names and places. have a fried who is one of the top dogs at the park. It is bunk just like any other year.
  13. I will not shoot fawns. They are to small to be worth it to me. Other then that I drop the first one that walks in front of me. Big rack little rack or doe ,If I will shoot it at end of season I will shoot it on the first day. I have gotten some nice ones (pics are on here someplace) but not because I waited and gave others a pass. Only time I will eat a tag is if all I have seen are fawns. But I don't knock someone else for shooting fawns. If I tag out on the first day I will still go and sit in the woods and watch nature just as if I were hunting. Seen more deer when no gun in hand then with.
  14. Oh I see I for got to say it was just sitting in it. Someone was going to put it in a Chevy truck but it never made it.
  15. I was told it was to study there moement. Also tat there were 2 young black bear . 150 pound males with collars dropped in the area along with a couple other animals but he couldn't tell me what the others were. I got some cam pics of both bear for a few days not toget her but never far apart. One had a white collar the other was orange. Called to let them know bear with white collar seemed to be gone. They said that bear was being tracked back where he was trapped within 4 days of release. This was in Wyoming county and bear was trapped in bully hill forest the other side of Allegany county. Pretty good diistance. We never saw the deer or bear during season nor heard of them being taken. Haven't seen them since before last season.
  16. The box of pellets I have has a panelist in it . It tells about the powder and says they never recommend more then 2 50 grain pellets. 100 grains tops even though some companies say there guns can Handel 150 grains. Even the magnum loads some guys think are 75 grains are only 50. Paper explains they are only taller because of extra chemicals add to make burn faster and hotter. I figure they guys who make the powder are the ones to listen to. I'm go to 280 yards with 100 grains so never felt the need to try more anyways.
  17. Last year we had 2 with collars in area. I called dec was told Cornell was doing a 5 year study for them. They were brought in from other areas. They wouldn't say where. Asked about shooting them. Was told it was fine to take them they just asked that if we did for us to call them so they could get collar back.
  18. I only addressed you because I was responding to what you said. Men nothing by it and didn't mean to employ you were talking about me. I knew you mentioned everyone. Just pointing out everyone does not do what you said. I never said you or anyone else mentioned the boogeyman however expecting danger around every corner is like looking for the boogeyman..one does not need a gun to stay aware of there surroundings. And being affraid in the woods doesn't help either. Fear is useful at times. However walking around in fear all the time is not. Being aware of noises in the woods is good. Thinking every noise in the woods is something coming to get you is not good.
  19. I'm not Rambo but I'm not afraid of everything that goes bump in the dark either. By saying you need a gun for your safety everywhere u go you are in fact saying you are affraid. If they odds of something happening are so small as you say why worry about. If I worried about all the what ifs or might that could happen on a daily basis I would never leave the house. Worrying about something happening usually causes you to make something happen. I am not saying there is no chance of it but wanting to carry a gun when bow hunting just to feel safe is a little over the top. Like I said what about the guys without a pistol? If you get to carry your pistol can they carry a shot gun. No grow not everyone locks there truck. Mine is left unlocked and keys in no matter where I leave it. Even if I need to go to down town hood ville. Never had a problem. Yet I have had people tell stories of how they locked up but when they came back windows were broke and the belongings were stolen. I have never locked a window or door in my life and never checked under my bed for boogeyman after returning either. Must be luck that with all these bad things that could kill me I am still alive.
  20. Only take a bottle of water. I only eat once a day and since I hunt dark to dark I eat when I get home or back to cabin.
  21. I have 2 cabelas extremes and a couple amersteps they all came with a piece of nylon with metal rod with hook on it hanging from center of roof. It was labeled bow hanger. I do not bow hunt so I cut them out. Only pop ups I have ever used so didn't know all didn't have them.
